Noelle Stanuch is a Smithtown resident who is fundraising for clean, safe and reliable water in sub-Saharan Africa for the second time through The Water Project, a non-profit organization. This organization provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. For each gift you make to The Water Project, you will eventually receive a report that details the technology used, the location of the effort, the number of people it serves and photographs of the process and completed water project. “Can you imagine not having access to safe drinking water? Not having clean water to shower with? Not knowing if the water you cook with will make you ill? I can’t, but I

don’t take what I have for granted,” Noelle said. “There is a real issue in today’s society. We tend to not think about what we don’t live around or what we don’t see often. There are so many people suffering around the world and we need to help them.” There is a water crisis affecting women, children, families and farmers. Every day in rural communities throughout subSaharan Africa, there are millions of people that suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls there are spending so much time fetching dirty water, which leads to illness and disease. Globally, 1 in 9 people still have no access to clean water, however, in the communities The Water Project serves, it’s 9 out of 9. “So many of us are fortunate enough that throughout this pandemic we not only

knew that we should wash our hands often, but we had clean water to do so. That is not reality for everyone. God has given me so many ways that I can help others! I want to make a change...I feel called to make a change. I’m excited to see if I can reach my fundraising goal and see where God leads me next. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is hosting a walk through/ cleanup event of the Massapequa Preserve on Saturday, April 17 at 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. MTAC and its partners including the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force and the Nassau County Police Department have been walking through the Massapequa Preserve conducting environmental

scans of the area. As a result, the National Guard has found drug paraphernalia located in specific areas of the Preserve known as “hot spots”. MTAC along with its partners will be hosting an event on Saturday, April 17th where we will be walking through these “hot spots” areas to clean up litter and drug paraphernalia. MTAC invites residents to attend the cleanup event to “Keep the Preserve Pristine”

and work together to ensure the Massapequa Preserve continues to be a safe environment for community residents and their families. Oyster Bay Harbor Boat Moorings Available

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh reminds residents interested in mooring their boats on the beautiful north shore to contact the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources to obtain one of the 700 moorings offered just off the shore of the marina, located at Theodore

Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. “Our beautiful Town boasts water on both its north and south shores, making boating a popular activity for our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Our pristine harbor has convenient moorings for boating enthusiasts who are looking to access

the waters of Oyster Bay Harbor and beyond.” Mooring permits are $50 for Town residents and $75 for non-residents. Permits are effective through the end of the year. For more information, contact the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5811.

Arthur Filete was born on August 28th, 1926 to an Italian immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent the first 7 years of his life before moving to Massapequa on Long Island. In 1944, he graduated from high school and promptly enlisted in the US Navy before being called to active duty in August of that year. Mr. Filete had various jobs in the service of his community before being called by the navy: he would help neighbors and drive a taxi, among other tasks. After military boot camp, he was sent to school to be a diesel mechanic. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the USS Jacob Jones (DE-130). The USS Jacob Jones, named after a naval hero of the War of 1812, was a destroyer escort and provided its services against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. In the last year of the war, the carrier crossed the Atlantic 20 times,

providing protection for merchant and troop convoys in the North Atlantic. Mr. Filete served on two of these crossings that carried troops and war supplies to Europe. On his second Atlantic crossing, Mr. Filete departed from New York to the port of Southampton, England. By serving on this convoy, he contributed to the Allied buildup effort and the defense of the Allied military, becoming part of the last transatlantic convoy before Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 7th, 1945. On the return trip to the United States, Germany surrendered, thereby ending WWII. Aboard the USS Jacob, the crew received orders to join the invasion of mainland Japan, but one day away from Pearl Harbor, President Truman ordered the atomic bombing of mainland Japan. A second atomic bomb resulting in the surrender of Japan, the USS Jones’ task of releasing personnel from the units no longer required a war-level

staff. However, Mr. Filete did not immediately qualify to be discharged and was sent to the naval supply depot in Guam. There, he spent his last eight months in the US Navy before returning home in time to celebrate USA Memorial Day. We will never forget the bravery of American heroes such as Arthur Filete who is receiving this decoration.

At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

Reading Comes With A Wardrobe Read Across America Day turned into a week-long celebration of children’s literature at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Every day from March 1-5 featured a Dr. Seuss-themed activity. Designed to encourage children to read more books and to promote a love of literacy, Read Across America Day is held every year on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. McKenna students paid tribute to the author known for his rhyming

stories and original characters by dressing up based on different books. The week kicked off with “Cat in the Hat” day as students wore crazy hats to school. Teachers brought in and shared their favorite children’s books with their classes. “Fox in Socks” day featured silly or mismatched socks, along with students bringing in their favorite books to share. It was easy being green on “Green Eggs and Ham” day, during which students brought in snacks to

have during independent reading time. Crazy hair day was in honor of “Cat in the Hat” characters Thing 1 and Thing 2. The celebration concluded with “The Sleep Book” day in which students wore their pajamas and read by flashlight. Several classes also did Dr. Seuss-themed projects. Since the “Cat in the Hat” is set on a rainy day, first graders wrote about the activities they do on rainy days. Second grade classes had a Dr. Seuss book reada-thon.

A Peer-To-Peer Mental Health Lesson Massapequa High School senior Isabella Ritieni recognizes the stress that comes with being a teenager, so recently she connected with students at Berner Middle School to emphasize the importance of mental health and wellness. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Isabella created a mental health awareness video for Berner’s seventh graders. The video was shown during health education classes and focused on strategies to cope with everyday stress and anxiety. It also emphasized to students that they are not alone in dealing with these issues and provided contact information for local mental health resources. “I think it came out really great and I think the kids learned a lot,” she said. Isabella, an aspiring

teacher, could not present to health classes in person due to the pandemic, so she decided to make the six-minute video. She also provided a survey to get feedback from students after they viewed the presentation. Her project advisor was Adrienne LoPresti, the associate director of the Massapequa-based YES Community Counseling Center. She also worked with high school social worker Joann Waters, district health education coordinator Denise Baldinger and Berner health education teachers Luana Dunn, Kathleen Meehan and Denise Robertson. Ms. Robertson said all students benefit from peer-to-peer education and Isabella’s video was short but impactful. She noted that after watching the video, many of her seventh graders implemented

some of the stress-release suggestions such as journaling and creating a worry box. Additionally, Ms. Robertson commended Isabella for recognizing the need to have discussions in school about mental health and finding a way to do a meaningful community service project at a time when opportunities are limited. She said the video will become another resource in the mental health curriculum. Isabella has been a member of the Girl Scouts since kindergarten. The Gold Award, the highest honor in the scouts, is earned upon successful completion of a community service project. She began work on her project last summer, and said she chose seventh grade as her target audience so they can take this knowledge into their teen years.
