Councilwoman Walsh stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. Together, we’re improving Mother Earth by cleaning up and protecting our environment.” No preregistration is required. The Charity of the Month for April is
Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential. Remarkably, through its multiple residential and out-patient facilities and programs, Hope for Youth impacts the lives of more than 14,000 local children, teens and families each year.

To fulfill its vision of offering residential, community-based alternatives for emotionally troubled children, Hope for Youth first opened a group home in Bellmore to serve adolescent males. Since then, the agency, which now has a staff of 175 employees and interns, has grown to offer a range of programs that provide a full spectrum of services, all reflecting a detailed and closely monitored hierarchy of needs of Long Island’s youth and families. While the bulk of Hope for Youth’s funding comes from contracts with Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York State, donations from supporters also serve as a key component of its budget. Hope for Youth also depends upon support from volunteers from the community, who help with administrative support, community outreach, fundraising, residential programs and event planning. The visionary founder of Hope for Youth was the late Nassau County Family Court Judge Elizabeth Bass Golding, a pioneer activist for children’s rights. The 500 for 500 Competition founded by Dr. Cynthia Paulis in 2014 held its annual event at the Bar Harbor Library on Tuesday, March 29, and was well attended. The competition involves writing an essay of 500 words for a 500 dollar
scholarship based on a topic which this year was “Why is it important to vote in an election.” The contest is open to all Massapequa high school seniors. Traditionally one boy and one girl are selected to receive a $500 scholarship each and read

such a success. After the meet and greet, the formal part began with the pledge of allegiance, and then each student brought their A-game and read their essays. Afterward, each student was handed a sealed envelope and the audience counted down. They were instructed to open the envelope, and the winners of the $500 scholarships will be revealed. In a surprise
move, Dr. Paulis awarded all four contestants $500 much to the delight of the finalists and families. They were also given a gift bag containing a flag, a pocket version of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and a paperback book by Norman Vincent Peale, “Positive Thinking Every Day.” Dr. Paulis shared her memories as an MHS graduate winning a writing
and oratorical competition and how much it meant to her. She instructed them, “To go out on their new career paths with courage, confidence, and a positive attitude. You have the ability to make a difference in this world and make it a better place and at some point in your time remember to give back to your community the way you have been given an opportunity today.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.
