STAYING HEALTHY, HELPFUL AND HOPEFUL IN CORONA LAND By Dr. Cynthia Paulis Mayoral Candidate For Massapequa Park Looking out my window spring has arrived and no pandemic is going to interfere with its time schedule. The cherry trees are blooming, the Bradford pears with delicate white blossoms are about to burst into full bloom and around town the daffodils are trumpeting that winter is over and it’s time to come out and play. Someone recently told me that the daffodil represents the symbol of hope and we need that now more than ever.
As we adjust to this new world of social distancing and hand washing, we can also do our part in this by staying as healthy as possible. The emergency rooms are overloaded, so unless you are critically ill, STAY HOME. Contact your physician or go to a local urgent care center if you are elderly, have risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension (not controlled), immunocompromised system and you are exhibiting the following; fever 100.3 or higher, cough, shortness of breath or weakness. Otherwise STAY HOME. Most people who do test positive for Covid-19 will recover so CALM DOWN. Corona virus can enter your system through the nose, mouth or eyes, so keep your hands away from your face and wash often with warm soapy water, especially if you are outside or have to go shopping. I recommend wearing gloves outside your home, disposable or even rubber gloves you can wash (especially in stores) and limit your exposure there and getting gas. The virus can linger on metal for several days so keep paper towels and Lysol or bleach in your car for when you are pumping gas or using a shopping cart. Eat healthy and boost your immune system with fresh fruits, and vegetables, especially blueberries that are high in antioxidants. Oranges, strawberries, and VOTE DR. CYNTHIA PAULIS
When the corona virus enters your body it tries to penetrate the cells and replicate itself. The healthier you are and the stronger your cell walls are you have a better chance of fending off the virus. Avoid sugar which causes inflammation in your system and can weaken your immune system. The corona virus is an airborne disease that is spread by coughing or sneezing from an infected individual and those droplets can remain airborne for several hours and on hard surfaces for days. This is why social distancing is important. Someone may be a carrier and not be showing signs until 14 days after exposure. One of the more unusual symptoms of this disease is that some people have experienced a loss of smell. If you think you have Covid-19 and want to be tested, check with your doctor and see if they are doing the testing or there are drive through centers now being set up. One at Jones Beach is free but you must meet the criteria and call ahead for an appointment at (888) 364-3065 otherwise you will be turned away. For those who are healthy, now is a great time to be helpful. If you have elderly neighbors who are staying home see if you can shop for them, walk their dog, or pick up medicine for them. The blood banks are in desperate need for blood so contact either the Red Cross or check with your local hospitals to donate. So many restaurants had to close but are doing takeout or delivery so try to support them. The healthcare workers, who are on the front line as tireless warriors against this pandemic, work long difficult stressful shifts. Send in trays of food from your local restaurants to them. That’s a double win by helping your community restaurants and the hospital workers that keep you healthy. Remember to stay positive and hopeful. Unlike 911 that was a terrorist attack, or Sandy that destroyed an infrastructure we are facing an unknown disease and working with the health leaders we will get through this. We still have a community, although altered, but it’s still working. We have our homes, food, water, electricity, first responders, and the ability to communicate with one another. Think back to where we were and what our world looked like after 911 or Sandy. We all made it through because we were strong and we had hope and after all We Are New Yorkers! Stay safe and stay well and above all stay hopeful.

Watching the news last night I saw the numbers of those infected by Covid-19 and the death toll rising at an alarming rate with NY being the epicenter. Our tireless healthcare workers still do battle every day against a lethal disease without proper equipment putting their own lives and those of their families at risk. If you listen to the news it’s as if the world is ending. Yet when I go outside I hear the laughter of children, a father teaching his daughter how to play baseball, families walking and biking together, the usual dog walkers and the seniors (although not as many now) who go for their daily health walk. As a retired ER physician I know what it’s like to work in hell without the proper supplies fighting an unknown disease. I trained during the AIDS epidemic which gripped the country in the 80’s. It was a very scary time to be a doctor and I remember suiting up in the hazmat gear. So many people lost their lives during that time and now people are living with AIDS with the benefit of new breakthrough medicine and altering their lifestyles. Now with this pandemic more than ever, it’s important to stay positive and hopeful. Old medicines are being put to use as a possible cure and a vaccine is being developed. There is hope.

In the meanwhile, I would like to ask several things of you...most importantly, please heed the warnings related to safety and health. Stay in your home as much as you are able, and minimize contact with others. Getting fresh air is essential, so long as you are maintaining the social distancing recommendations. While I know many of us feel invincible, this virus seems to have its own set of rules, so please be vigilant and smart! If not for yourself, think of others that could be at risk. For those of you who are out and about, I would ask you to support our local businesses as best as you can...our restaurants, pharmacies and drug stores, and our food stores! Talk about unsung heroes....making sure that we have food in our homes and a semblance of normalcy through takeout and delivery. Please keep our restaurants in mind if you are able to order food...every penny counts these days as we are all trying to minimize lay-offs and closings. Many of our restaurants have put curbside pick-up and delivery operations in place to better serve folks...doing the very best that we can is all that we can do! And, in so many instances, the best that we can do truly makes a difference!!! Please continue to check our website and Facebook page as we will continue to post all relevant items related to this pandemic. Our office is also working remotely and we are working hard to make sure that any questions or calls are responded to. That said, this is a time for patience and understanding, as we too, are negotiating a changing world! And so my friends, on behalf of the Board, please take care of yourselves. In our varied industries, we often take for granted the importance of taking care of ourselves and we put our work first, but that said, this is the time when we need all our strength and energy!! Rest when you can, take some personal time as you are able, and trust, like in the past, that we will get through this...we have weathered many, many storms in the past. This too, will be something we speak of for generations to come and when we look back, as we will, we want to be able to say that we got it right!! This is a time to count our blessings, even when we feel let down and disappointed...a time to acknowledge those who bring smiles to our hearts and faces, and a time to count on the strength of the human spirit. Many home improvement television series showcase people deciding whether to improve upon their current homes to make them into the houses of their dreams or to put “for sale” signs in their lawns and move on to something new. The question of whether to move or stay put depends on various factors. Such factors may include emotional attachment to a home, the current economic climate and the cost of real estate. Current data points to a greater propensity for people to invest and improve upon their current properties rather than trading up for something new. According to information collected by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes
permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. The National Association of Realtors said that, between 1987 and 2008, home buyers stayed in their homes an average of six
years before selling. Since then, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. Part of what’s fueling this permanency is that many home buyers were able to acquire rock-bottom mortgage interest rates shortly after the 2008
recession. As a result, they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people. Those factors and others have led many homeowners to invest in renovations instead. The experts at Bankrate say realistic budgeting and comparing renovation project costs against mortgages and interests rates can further help individuals decide whether to remain in their current homes or move out. Very often a smarter layout and more efficient floor plan can make meaningful differences in spaces. Renovations and redesigns can make sense and often are less expensive and disruptive than moving.

The mysteries of ancient Greece were solved by sixth graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District who relied on clues provided by their classmates. For a technology-based social studies project, each student in Kathryn Pullen’s class was assigned either a Greek mythical creature or location to make a video about. The caveat was that students could not reveal the subject of their videos, but instead could only give
hints. They worked with Ms. Pullen and technology learning coach Meredith Marin to create the short “Who am I?” and “What am I?” videos using Flipgrid. Students furthered their understanding of the research process by using only credible sources to find information. On Feb. 28, students participated in a digital scavenger hunt. They went around the room with their Chromebooks, scanned each QR code to bring up a video about a mythical
creature or location, and filled out a sheet with their guesses. As a guide, all of the answers were hidden inside of word art, designed to resemble the Parthenon of ancient Greece. The sixth grade social studies curriculum focuses on ancient civilizations. In addition to learning about mythical creatures and historical locations, they read “The Lightning Thief” Rick Riordan, a novel based on Greek mythology.
Language Festival Is A Journey Around The Globe Hundreds of elementary students from the Massapequa School District experienced cultures from around the world at the 16th annual World Language Festival on March 4 at Massapequa High School. Activities were coordinated by high school students from American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish classes. Each young visitor received a passport to have stamped as they visited 14 different rooms. Students from the Mandarin Chinese program taught their elementary peers how to play with a Chinese yo-yo and how to use chopsticks. In the Italian room, children listened to cultural music and learned about the different regions of Italy. A photo station with French expressions was a popular spot for guests. Students learned fun facts
about Paris and made crafts representing other French-speaking regions in the world. Children heard German music, decorated sugar cookies and participated in a fortune telling game using gummy bears from Haribo, a German candy company. There was also German dancing in the gymnasium. “We wanted them to have a uniquely German experience and remember the fun they had in the German room,” senior Christian Snyder said. Several rooms were devoted to Spanish language and culture. In one room, all of the activities were based on animals. Children learned the Spanish names of different animals, which they matched to pictures. At other stations they could play Spanish vocabulary games, make Day of the Dead T-shirts and sing songs. would not be complete without food. Children and their parents visited the international food court in the cafeterias with entrees and desserts provided by the world language clubs. One of the culinary arts classroom featured international cooking demonstrations, where elementary and high school students worked together to make quesadilla, crepes and pretzels. American Sign Language students ran an escape room, learning facts about the deaf culture and then navigating the language to break out. Members of the National Art Honor Society did face painting and Berner Middle School’s World Language Club celebrated the four languages offered there as students could dance the Macarena, create a Mardi Gras craft, make an origami animal and play a memory game in German.
