SINGER EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION - Massapequa High School senior Nicole Ferretti was named an All-National musician with a selection to honors ensemble mixed choir. Photo courtesy of the Massapequa School District
The vocal talents of Massapequa High School senior Nicole Ferretti earned her a selection to the prestigious All-National Honors Ensemble mixed choir, and she attended a virtual conference in late January hosted by the National Association for Music Education. Nicole was part of the soprano section. In addition to performing with student-musicians from across the country, she also attended master classes on different topics such as music composition, music education and applying music theory to performance. There were several guest speakers and Nicole said one of the highlights for her was hearing from composer Eric Whitacre. For her audition, Nicole submitted a video of herself singing “Do Not Go, My Love” by
Richard Hageman and “Through the House Give Glimmering Light” by Quire Cleveland. Nicole is a member of several vocal groups at Massapequa High School including the A Cappella Choir and the Chordettes. She also plays the cello in the symphony orchestra and has a lead role in the upcoming musical production of “Anything Goes.” Outside of school,
she is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Nassau Chamber Chorale. She credits several music teachers for their support in her musical journey including her first chorus teacher, Tom Tucker at Birch Lane Elementary School, her high school chorus teachers Malcolm Gilbert at Ames and Ilena Dempsey and Nichole Greene at the main

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.
YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups
It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Church to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Thursday, March 31tst at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service). Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. “Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance in preparing their application,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.” Requirements for applying for a passport include:
One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend. Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship. Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).
