Ancient Games Togas were the school uniform on March 10th for sixth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as they participated in competitive games just like the ancient Greeks and Romans. The event began with a procession to the auditorium, with one student from each of the four classes carrying a paper torch. Students recited the Olympic oath, which was about fair games and sportsmanship.

Activities included basketball dribbling, jump rope, an egg relay race and a hula-hoop human chain. The event concluded with a group singalong of “That’s Amore.” The sixth-grade social studies curriculum covers ancient civilizations. Students began the new unit by studying Greek mythology and introducing themselves as different gods and goddesses before coming together for Toga Day. “It was fun to experience

this, since we are learning about it in class,” said sixth-grader Griffin Hunt. Added Jamie Rabitz, upon wearing a toga for the first time, “It was really cool to know that they dressed like this in the past.” Food was provided by parents and represented the two cultures. Chaos & Creation Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. BAGPIPER AT BIRCH - Michael Molloy, a music teacher at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, kept his St. Patrick’s Day tradition alive by serenading students and staff with songs on the bagpipes. March Madness has come to Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, but instead of college basketball, the focus in on literacy. In Matthew Cunha’s class, fifth-graders are participating in March Mentor Text Madness. He created a bracket using 32 mentor texts, which are books that students use as examples of good writing

as part of the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop initiative. Students must compare two books and write a summary. Whichever is the favorite of the class, moves on to the next round in the bracket. Mr. Cunha explained that students must give a solid reason why they like one book over the other, such as the literary devices that are used or the lesson that a story imparts.

After reading “Esperanza Rising,” fifth-graders in Colleen Kiley’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own board games

based upon the historical fiction novel. The activity allowed students to create a visual representation of the book by incorporating elements of the plot and the main

characters into their games. Each group had to make a game board, pieces and directions. One group’s product, River Runner, followed Esperanza’s journey from

Mexico to California and players had to answer questions about the story to advance. Another group created the characters out of clay to serve as game pieces.

children rolled dice and covered the number that represented the total with gold coins. They also used blocks to measure paper leprechauns, and played a number guessing game called Leprechaun Squeeze.
