How Do I Top That? confess in their most candid moments that they are afraid of being exposed as a fraud, a sham, an imposter in their own life. I hear it from friends all the time. It all comes down to, “What do I do for my next trick?” I remember a magazine interview that actress Michelle Pfeiffer gave many years back, in which she confessed that every time she stepped onto a new movie set, she was convinced that would be the time she would finally be exposed as a bad actress and she would be fired on the spot. It’s funny, but these very human feelings can even extend to something as simple as planning your child’s birthday party. How do you top last year’s birthday party? Or will it even be on par with last year’s party? Will the apple pie you made at last year’s family gathering meet everyone’s expectations this year? Maybe you just signed a new client, and you’re wondering if your work will live up to their expectations? So, how do we defuse this common human ailment of the fear of living up to our own
expectations, and the expectations of others? Self-judgement is born in the mind. Turn down the volume of the mind and turn up the volume of the heart. The gut should always run interference. Some of what I write may be pure platinum, while other entries are gold, silver or even rust, depending on who you ask. I’ve certainly gotten a few rusty emails over these months. I’ve also gotten emails of appreciation and gratitude that have touched me deeply. One thing I will always serve up is my truth. That I know I can deliver every time, without exception. Having the courage to say, “This is who I am, and this is how I feel,” is the antidote to, “How do I top that?” syndrome. The next time you’re about to give your next presentation, create your next piece of art, cook your next meal, plan your next party or draw up your next big plans, if it feels right and it feels real, and it resonates with your heart and your gut, it’s a meaningful and worthy pursuit. How it will be received by others is anyone’s guess.

After my last column expressing how much my late friend Brenna meant to me, I received an outpouring, not just from regular readers, but from Brenna’s family and friends, letting me know that the column I wrote about her touched them tremendously. Now, how do I top that? Have you ever felt that way? Although the music department has been using SmartMusic for several years, this year a web-based program was introduced that has a greatly expanded library of songs. It also allows students to access music on their Chromebooks so they can practice at home. “I like that you can hear yourself play, so you know what to work on,” said seventh-grader Josh Holden about the feature that allows him to record and play back his own performance. Mr. Basirico added that the program allows students to improve their music sight reading abilities, which helps them earn better NYSSMA scores, one of the determining factors for selection to All-County ensembles. In general music classes with teacher Christina Guando, students use Soundtrap to make their own music. For a recent project, students worked
in groups and remixed pop music by making new beats after the drum tracks were removed from wellknown songs. Ms. Guando explained that the project taught students about beat patterns and looping, and also provided an understanding of how modern music is made. They learned that their beats couldn’t added arbitrarily had to make sense with the rest of the music. Students began the year by using Incredibox, a user-friendly, drag-anddrop program to add beats and create looping effects, before moving on to the more advanced software. “The technology is a tool to help the students create,” she said. “They can keep it as simple or make it as complex as they want. It allows them to do a lot of creating, without needing the performing skills of an ensemble class.”

Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!

Technology is enhancing the music experience for students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District as they are working with programs that help them develop their abilities. Band and orchestra students are using SmartMusic, an Internetbased program that allows them to practice hundreds of songs and receive instant feedback on their performances. In addition to viewing the musical notes on the screen, each song includes a professional accompaniment so students understand how their part works within a full ensemble. “This program is a nice addition,” Mr. Einhart said. “The students get to practice their music in the context of actually playing with an orchestra.” Added band teacher Ronald Basirico, “They can hear what everyone else is supposed to sound like, so they can fit their part in.”

Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. The class has its own bracket to see which book emerges as the favorite. Students suggested dozens of popular books,
which were then divided into different categories such as biography, novel, poetry and short story. Throughout the month, students select their favorites, and the books with the most votes remain in the competition. There is even a category for authors. Ms. Meininger said that the most exciting part of

Girl Scout Pop-Up Museum Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently partnered with Girl Scouts of Nassau County and established a Pop-Up Museum at the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center to commemorate their centennial anniversary. The exhibition, which
highlights a collection of vintage Girl Scout uniforms, patches, artifacts, photos, and more, highlights the tradition of Girl Scouting by sharing this collection of memories. Supervisor Saladino congratulated the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and presented
them with a citation honoring their 100th anniversary. The Pop-Up Museum will be on display throughout the month of March at the Hicksville Athletic Center, weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. or on Saturdays.
