Town Of Oyster Bay Seeks Nominations For Women Of Distinction Program History Month, residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities. “Each year, the Town has the honor of recognizing women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them through our Women of Distinction Program,”
said Councilwoman Johnson, who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make your community a better place to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2022 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.” Supervisor Saladino
added, “We are proud to recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a
family.” Women of Distinction will be recognized at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Town Board in May. Nominations may be submitted for any achievement or honorable cause performed by the nominee. The Town seeks to recognize individuals for their contributions to the arts, education,

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-profit organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community. The United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in December 2021, Protecting Youth Mental Health, which spoke to the unprecedented challenges our nation’s children and families face, compounded by the pandemic. Without surprise, the report highlights the growing prevalence of young people experiencing mental health issues and acknowledges risk factors that became more present as a result of COVID-19. Responding to youth and families for the past 45 years and maintaining essential programs throughout the pandemic, YES Community Counseling Center is keenly aware of the growing needs and challenges referenced in the Surgeon General’s advisory. Some good news from the pandemic is that the public has recognized the need to support youth mental health and well-being. Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc. Emotional Regulation. Practice techniques to manage emotions by first
developing emotional intelligence within ourselves and our children. Taking the space between thoughts and behavior to identify feelings and how to effectively communicate those feelings, etc. Talk about the risk of alcohol and drugs. Children are exposed to positive images about alcohol at a very young age. Parents need to counteract those positive messages by communicating the negative impact of alcohol and other drugs in a youth’s developing brain. Look out for warning signs of distress and seek help when needed. Signs of distress include irritability, anger, withdrawal, changes in appearance, performance at school, sleeping or eating patterns. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary.

Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s events nationwide have helped raise $314 million for lifesaving childhood cancer research.

Whether they were watching a canine demonstration or trying on helmets and other tactical gear, students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were delighted to meet and learn from police officers during Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on March 11. Originally scheduled for January but delayed because of a snow day, the annual tradition at Unqua is highly anticipated by both students and the special guests. Police officers from Nassau County, New York City and local village departments came to talk to students and show off their equipment. Many of the speakers were parents and relatives of Unqua students. They represented a variety of police professions including patrol officers, commanders and specialty areas like the bomb squad, undercover detectives and canine and mounted units. In visiting the classes, police officers talked about their responsibilities, challenges and equipment. They shared stories from

500 For 500 Competition Winners Announced Dr. Cynthia Paulis is proud to announce the winners of the 500 for 500 competition that was open to all Massapequa High School seniors. This year’s theme was “Why is it important to vote in elections.” There was an overwhelming number of entries, making the
selection very difficult, so it was decided to expand the awards. Four finalists were carefully selected. There will be two first-place winners and two-second place winners. The firstplace winners will each receive $500. The secondplace winners will also receive a cash prize that
will be revealed the night of the event. The event will take place on Tuesday evening March 29 at 6:30 pm in the conference room of the Bar Harbor Library in Massapequa where the winners will be announced. Each winner will have the opportunity to read their essays.
Berner Students Create A Digital Drug-Free Message Seventh graders are doing their part to promote healthy lifestyles among their peers with the creation of antidrug books at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Denise Robertson’s health classes are making the informative digital projects that warn about the dangers of many different substances.
Ms. Robertson explained that the purpose of these student-created books are to present information in a way that’s relatable to others in their age group. Each team was assigned a substance to research and learn about its harmful effects. They had to note its effect on the brain and body, how the drug is taken, slang terms and
whether it is legal or illegal, among other facts. Using Book Creator, every group made a cover page and an informational fact sheet. The completed books were then shared with all sixth and seventh grade health teachers at Berner as an additional educational resource.

This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms our Waterways.’ “This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being co-sponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay, two organizations that greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment.
