Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently accepted a generous donation of equipment from the Massapequa Coast Little League to help enhance the baseball/softball experience for little leaguers as well as for anyone that ventures into John Burns Park in Massapequa. Massapequa Coast Little League donated two brand new 70 foot

batting cages, as well as net replacements for the two existing batting cages within the park. “John Burns Park is such a beautiful venue and has become a hub for youth sports in the Town, with the ballfields and surrounding equipment getting boundless use by the community. That being said, with significant use by local teams and

park patrons, some of the equipment, specifically the netting for the existing batting cages, has gotten old and worn down over time,” said Supervisor Saladino. “These equipment donations, made possible by the Town’s fantastic working relationship with the Massapequa Coast Little League and its president, Craig Garland, will bring improvements and a

much needed facelift to the existing batting cages, as well as the addition of two brand new batting cages, at no cost at all to the Town. On behalf of the Town Board, I thank the Massapequa Coast Little League for their generous donation.” The new batting cages and nets will be operational for the 2021 season and will be installed near the baseball

field at Burns Park. The equipment upgrades being made by the Massapequa Cost Little League are as follows: • new 70 foot batting cage to be erected adjacent to the Rookies Field ; • new 70 foot batting cage to be erected adjacent to the west t-ball field; and • purchase and replacing of the batting cage

netting on the front turf field and 90 foot baseball field, which will replace the current netting that has deteriorated. The total cost of the equipment donations to John Burns Park amounts to $10,665, the entirety of which will be covered by the Massapequa Coast Little League.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a ﬁxed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

The Chamber has been busy during the last month. We had our February General Meeting via Zoom which we projected from Allstate: The Zabbia Insurance Agency office. I thank our First Vice President Robert Zabbia for hosting the meeting and facilitating the Zoom call. We had over 20 members on the call, and I appreciate all who participated and made our meeting interesting. Our Executive Board recently met to interview prospective candidates for a Board Vacancy. I would like to welcome The Transfiguration Project owner, Tim Ryan, to our Board. Tim will be a great addition and we look forward to good things from him.

My thanks go to Past President Jamie Bogenshutz, who has retired from our Board after many years of service. We wish her well in her retirement from YES Community Counseling Center, and we look forward to attending her retirement party in June. Our recent Board Meeting netted some great fundraising ideas. We are looking at a Wine Tasting event to be chaired by J.P. Scarisbrick, as well as a Fall Holiday Fair to be chaired by Robin Hepworth, and finally a Trade Expo to be chaired by Robert Zabbia. These events will assist us in getting through the next few months with needed funding. Past President Anthony Ventiera also informed us that we may be able to have our Street Festival this year, and we look forward to good news with that as we get closer to our aimed timeframe of August. We now have two published authors in the Chamber. Gary Slavin recently published his crime-thriller novel Four Pebbles on a Bench, and Isabelle Rapacciuolo illustrated the children’s book The Adventures of Granny and Lexi Loo. Both are currently available for all to purchase and enjoy, the Chamber will also soon have these great books for sale at a luncheon meeting. Kudos to both Gary and Isabelle on their wonderful achievements.

Berner Students And Staff Are ‘Souper’ Generous

It may have been called the “Souper Bowl” but students and staff at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School weren’t limited to bringing in just soup for the annual February food drive. Any non-perishable goods, such as canned vegetables and boxes of macaroni, were welcome. The Chief’s Challenge club, under the direction of adviser Caroline Glynn, hosted the food collection in the week leading up to

the biggest football game of the year. They promoted the drive by hanging up posters around the school, and their efforts were successful as students and staff donated several hundred items in just three days. Students also watched a video about childhood hunger during homeroom to learn about the need. There were two boxes in the auditorium lobby, one for each of the two teams playing in the game, so donors could

place food in the box of the team they thought would win. All donations were given to YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa, which operates a food pantry. Chief’s Challenge member Mia Giannico said the food drive is important at this time of year because many food pantries have a decline in donations after the holiday surge, yet the need to provide for hungry families on Long Island remains.

Art Students Virtually Paint The Town Providing access to art for members of the community is one of the missions of the National Art Honor Society chapter at Massapequa High School. The student organization recently hosted two virtual paint nights, which were enjoyed by hundreds of students, parents and other art lovers. This year, families could sign up online for $50 and pick up a kit at the high school that included all of the necessary art supplies. The first event was held on the evening of Feb. 5 and participants painted a lavender field. The second paint night followed on Feb. 12. The theme was “Choose your own citrus fruit” and artists could paint ether a grapefruit, lemon, lime or orange and pick their background color.

Honor society co-adviser Paul Leone said that about 40 people signed up for the first paint night and about 80 for the second, but the number of actual participants was much higher because each kit included 10 blank canvases. He noted that many families logged in to Google Meet and did their paintings together. Some even shared their extra canvases with friends. Co-presidents Gabrielle Auze and Kayla Hassett were the painting instructors, with Gabrielle leading lavender fields and Kayla guiding citrus fruits. They provided step-by-step instructions and used a portable document camera, the OKIOCAM, to show participants the progression of their paintings. Gabrielle said that the

virtual paint nights were a good way of bringing attention to Massapequa High School’s art program. Bridgette Balian, the vice president, noted that it was a safe way for people to experience an activity that has become very popular in recent years. The honor society hosted paint nights at the school before the pandemic. “It was a fun event that we could we host for everyone else and share our love of art,” added activities coordinator Mackenzie Becker. Each paint night also featured raffles, as participants had the opportunity to win goodie bags filled with art supplies that were donated by the district’s art teachers.

Councilwoman Maier Cautions Residents Not to Fall Victim to Phone Scams Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Laura Maier cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Many times, scammers pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency, designed to intimidate the call recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone

numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and first-generation Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially those requesting money or personal information,

even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls: · Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or take your number off the list, this just confirms your phone number. · Consider asking your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. · Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. · Report your experience to the FTC online or by calling 1-877-382-4357. Visit www.ftc.gov/calls for more information.

According to Business2Community. com, 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In addition, customers are likely to spend 31 percent

more on a business with “excellent” reviews, while 72 percent of consumers say that positive reviews make them trust local businesses more. The 2018 ReviewTrackers Online Reviews Stats report found that star ratings affect consumer behavior, as 80 percent of consumers say they trust 4-, 4.5- and 5-star ratings
