Students from Grace Early Childhood Center got a peek into the world of science and health today. Dr. Susanne Labarba, an allergy and clinical immunologist, spoke to our three pre-k classes. What is an allergy? What are some of the causes – foods, plants, trees, mold, animals. What treatments are available? The students were able to get a close up view of the various tools and equipment used on patients during an exam. Dr. Labarba also explained the Teal Pumpkin Project. Grace students were given a goody bag to take home! Thank you, Dr. Labarba, for being an important part of our community and visiting Grace.

On an unused set of lockers in the middle school hallway, they painted it to look like a piano keyboard, which was done to accurately reflect the 88 keys. For the past three years, Berner has taken part in the One School, One Book initiative, in which all students read and discuss

the same book throughout the year. The Mural Club has painted the covers of each year’s selection on the glass block windows adjacent to the visitor’s entrance. Mr. Leone explained that this takes much preparation because the murals are painted backward to be seen the right way from the outside. “This club is a nice way to make friends, be creative and get a little more art into your life,” said eighth-grader Olivia Argueloes. “It’s a nice way to give the school a pop of color.”

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Soaring to New Heights Soda bottle rockets will soon be flying through the sky outside Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, as members of the Science Club are busy perfecting their creations. The rocket launch has become a tradition over the past five years for ninth-graders in the afterschool club. Students construct their rockets from two-liter soda bottles and other materials such as cardboard, duct tape and string. The goal is to have it stay in the air as long as possible, and land without cracking an egg inside. Students build their rockets under the direction of advisers Maureen Burke

and Nicholas Donohue. The science teachers guide them through the design and construction process, which takes several weeks of trial and error. The ninth-graders learn about aerodynamics and understand the ratio of weight to flight time. “They help each other, which is nice, even though they’re competing against each other,” Ms. Burke said of the collaboration that exists among Science Club members. “It’s a lot of fun. They have a blast.” The blasts will take place in April and May, when the Science Club heads out to the back field to launch the rockets, which are half-

filled with water, using an air compressor. The students use videos from past launches to get a feel for what designs work best. “I really like science and I’m seeing what it’s like to do experiments,” said student Giuliana Sambone. “This project is fun and I can do what I feel is right to build the best rocket.” The Science Clubs holds numerous competitions throughout the year in which students must build and test their creations, including parachutes and paper airplanes. They also build small rafts out of aluminum foil, to see which can hold the most pennies.

Young Readers Marian Augustine read stories to the children who were dressed in pajamas. Students and their “bunk mates” also shared together by flashlight. Librarian Renee Susman led first-graders in an author and illustrator study of Dr. Seuss. She also encouraged all students in the school to read for at least 20 minutes that day. Kindergarten teacher Maureen Walsh had her students made “Cat in the Hat” hats with “at” words. “Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of children and learning,” Ms. Susman said. “When we celebrate Dr. Seuss and reading,

we send the message to children that reading is fun and important.” Birch Lane Elementary School celebrated the day by having fourth-graders read Dr. Seuss books to kindergartners. Librarian Jackie Lee said the older students served as reading role models for their younger peers. Many kindergartners also wore crazy socks to school to celebrate the Dr. Seuss book “Fox in Socks.” They also colored paper socks to look like the ones they were wearing, and made a “Cat in the Hat” project by writing rhyming words.
