When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, ﬂeeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Safe Boating Sessions Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to take advantage of a new Boating Safety Seminar offered in late March at local Town Community Centers. The seminar is being offered by the Department of Public Safety Bay Constable Unit, and will include topics related to safe operation, regulations, responsibilities of boat ownership and operation. The seminar is free for Town residents. Supervisor Saladino stated, “This Boating Safety Seminar offers participants the fundamentals of safe boating operations. The course is recommended for all boaters and required by New York State for all personal watercraft operators.”

Too many people take their boats out onto the water without proper preparation,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The boating safety tips offered at this course can help save lives by ensuring boaters are properly prepared before they leave the dock.” Participants can choose between one eight-hour session and two four-hour sessions. · Session 1 will be offered from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20th and Monday, March 26th. Words of Wisdom Children’s author and illustrator Lauren Castillo inspired young writers and artists during her visit to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on February 27th. She spoke to all students during a pair of assemblies, which was sponsored by the PTA. Ms. Castillo then held an informal question

and answer session over a pizza lunch with a select group of fourth- and fifthgraders. The students were chosen following an essay contest, in which interested children wrote about why they wanted to have lunch with a noted author. Ms. Castillo spoke about the writing, editing and

publishing processes, dealing with criticism, authors who inspired her and how she gets ideas for stories. She discussed the importance of reading often and reading different kinds of books, as well as keeping a journal to jot down ideas.

Cultural Cut & Paste What is American culture all about? That was the question posed to students in Laura Marks’s third-grade class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who created visual depictions of life in the United States. Working in pairs,

students sifted through magazines and cut out pictures of people and objects that they felt best represented American lifestyles. They then created collages, which highlighted entertainment and sports, fashion and beauty, food, sports, pets,

transportation, hobbies, home decoration and popular products. The project related to the third-grade social studies curriculum in which students analyzed and compared cultures around the world.

Olympic Stories Debra Cirella, a secondgrade teacher at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, used the 2018 winter Olympics as a learning opportunity for her students. Children developed their research and writing skills while also increasing their technology proficiency. The second-graders created digital nonfiction books using the app Book Creator on Chromebooks.

Each student picked a winter Olympic sport to research such as hockey, figure skating and snowboarding and had to include information about the rules, necessary equipment and famous athletes. Research tools included World Book Children’s Edition, BrainPOP, PebbleGo and Google. Every digital book had to include a table of contents, glossary, fun facts and

about the author page. Children were able to use their creativity in selecting fonts and background colors, as well as designing the layout of their pages with photos. Ms. Cirella partnered with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione. On February 28th, the class hosted a writing celebration. Children traveled from desk to desk to view each other’s digital books.

High Marks The American Association of Teachers of German has recognized 37 students from the Massapequa School District for their outstanding performance on the 2018 National German Exam for High School Students. Massapequa High School boasted the top-performing student in the region. The exam, which was given in February, tested listening and reading comprehension. German is one of six languages offered through the district’s World Language program. The students are under the tutelage of teachers Dean Guarnaschelli and Brigette Kahn. At Massapequa High School’s main campus, 26 students received recognition. From the

Level 3 class, which is offered to 10th-graders, Christian Snyder was a gold medal recipient, Veronica Pioreck earned silver medal honors and Matthew Boice was a bronze medal winner. Also receiving acknowledgement were Alexander Cicitta, James Murphy, Sean Nuzio and Brianna Utz. From Level 4, which is open to juniors and seniors, gold medal winners were Samantha McGrath, Gillian Murphy and Evan Warns. Evan placed first among all students on Long Island. At the Ames campus, 11 ninth-graders in the Level 2 were honored. Furkan Agamak received a gold medal, Ryan Brzezinski earned silver and Zachary Formes, Juliana Lovett and Isabella Quartiere were bronze medal earns. Other students earning recognition were Elisabetta Antonacci, Jeremy Buchalter, Kelly Coll, Dennis Glum, Matthew Johnson and Matthew Siemion.

The cafeteria at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District resembled the games section of a county fair on March 2nd. Thirdgraders presented their cardboard creations, the culmination of weeks of planning and building. The activity was part of the STEAM program in which students explore science, technology, engineering, the arts and

math through hands-on, inquiry-based projects. Lockhart students worked in teams and were tasked with creating a game from a cardboard box. They used the engineering design process as well as their imaginations. Games included fishing, bowling, miniature golf, whack-amole, cornhole and ring toss. The students had to come up with rules and award tickets or prizes.

Students completed their projects under the direction of magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski along with third-grade teachers Connie-Jo O’Neill, Colleen Kennedy and Katelyn Mulvey. The children tried out each other’s games before parents were invited to come in, explore and play.
