The Red Watch Band initiative was spearheaded by Stony Brook University to reduce alcohol-related accidents among high school and college students by creating a “band” of teenagers looking out for each other. The district partners with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition to offer the program each year, and more than 450 students have been trained since its inception. Students who complete the training know the signs and symptoms of toxic drinking and when to call for help. They learn life skills they can carry with them to college and beyond. “Leaders are people who do the right thing, at the right time, regardless of who’s watching,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano. From kindergarten until graduation, students in the Massapequa School District learn the value of making good and healthy choices. But sometimes they don’t, and this is why the district implemented the Red Watch Band training program nine years ago. “We don’t want a poor decision to become a fatal decision,” said Kim Hession, social worker at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. “It’s an intervention program. You can’t look at someone who’s in trouble and say, ‘That’s not my problem.’” This year, 51 students in grades 9-12 completed the training, and were recognized at an afterschool ceremony at Ames on Feb. 8. They received certificates, red bands and key cards with emergency tips. The training program included a two-hour alcohol emergency response class with Ms. Hession and high school social worker Joanne Waters, and a Red Cross-certified first aid, CPR and AED class with health teacher Michael LaBella.

Adored great grandmother of Nicola Patruno. Mrs. Soper is also survived by her many nieces and nephews in Italy. Mrs. Soper loved to garden and was a seamstress by trade. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved her family and was known to enjoy a prank now and again. Mrs. Soper came to the U.S. from Italy at an early age and always said how proud she was when she became a citizen. She was very patriotic, loved this country, expressing it often.

Famous Figures Actors, athletes, humanitarians and world leaders were among the famous individuals that fifth-graders studied in Margaret Meininger’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. As part of their nonfiction biography unit, students could research any notable individual, past or present. Ms. Meininger encouraged them to pick a person that “they knew, but didn’t know a lot about.” They gathered information

using books and a variety of online resources such as biographical websites, news articles and quote compilations. In addition to basic biographical information, students highlighted accomplishments and challenges faced by their subjects. Each finished project included the typed report, pictures and a dedication. Students also made bottle dolls — models of their famous individuals made from plastic bottles and craft supplies.

Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R,C,I- Massapequa) today joined colleagues in the Legislature, disability rights advocates, members of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program of New York State (CDPAANYS) and those affected by the governor’s proposed $75 million in cuts at a press conference held by Assemblywoman Melissa Miller (R,C,RefAtlantic Beach) to call for full funding restoration to the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP). “Of all the things the governor could cut in this year’s budget, it is unconscionable that he would choose to eliminate a program so important to our seniors and most vulnerable New Yorkers,” LiPetri said. “Caring for an individual with disabilities places a tremendous burden on a family and the last thing we should be doing is making life more difficult for them.” CDPAP is a statewide Medicaid program that provides alternative ways for seniors and those with disabilities to receive at home care and treatment – essentially giving families more control and choice over how they receive care and who is providing it. “If the governor wants to cut spending, how about he start with his phony and ineffective economic development programs or giving free college to illegal aliens. It is our responsibility to protect every citizen of this state, especially those who require at-home care, and I will fight to see that these cuts are restored as budget negotiations progress.”

What Gifts Do You Bring to the World? “Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.” - Unknown The Wright brothers gave us the gift of ﬂight. Steve Jobs gave us the gift of portable, digitally downloadable music. Alexander Fleming gave us the lifesaving gift of penicillin and the birth of antibiotics to fight infections. Next to some of these historical bigwigs, it can be easy to downplay the gifts that we each offer to the world as inconsequential. While it is true that some of us provide gifts that impact millions, or even billions, of people around the world on a massive scale, many of us are here to share our gifts through what is commonly known as the ripple effect. The ripple effect is defined as “every action that you make affects other people and the planet.” Each of us is consistently generating ripples every day. We are powerful creators. It may not hit the entire world at once like the explosion of the iPhone. Your gifts may instead impact people more subtly and slowly, and therefore you are

prone to underestimate your power to impact others. The school teacher who leaves an indelible imprint on a particular student or group of students; the person who volunteers their time and attention to a worthy cause that changes the course of someone’s life; a genuine compliment spoken to someone who needs it at just the right time; the painting or sculpture you create that lands in someone’s home and makes them smile or feel inspired every time they look at it... there are so many things we each do and say that are impacting people around us in ways we cannot fully grasp. A co-worker of mine whom I like and respect very much, was telling me that she doesn’t know how I manage to write a weekly column, because she does not feel it is within her capacity to do so. I promptly replied to her, “You have the gift of kindness. You are one of the kindest people I have ever known, and that is your special gift.” She stared at me in stunned silence, as though she had not

been told that before. You may have the gift of kindness and generosity, or the gift of artistic expression. Perhaps your gift is being able to build things or put anything together. Maybe you have the gift of humor. You always manage to brighten people’s day with a well placed joke or funny story, and your comedic timing is impeccable. You may be gifted in the kitchen, whipping up the most delicious meals that bring people together. I have a dear friend whom I affectionately call, “The Child Whisperer.” Children are always calm and happy in his presence and they just love his energy; animals too. It’s human nature to continuously tally up our shortcomings, but have you ever taken stock of the gifts that you bring to the world? And when was the last time you really harnessed their power to improve your life and the lives of those around you? You don’t need permission to express your gifts to the world. The right question could be as simple as, “How can I make someone else’s life better today?”

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Grandma's Mandel Bread By Lisa F. of Oyster Bay

Lisa F. of Oyster Bay, along with her extended family, are forever tweaking her grandmother's chocolate chip and cherry mandel bread to get just the right measurements of each ingredient. "It's been an ongoing labor of love," says Lisa. "My Grandma Bernice, along with my great grandmother and a cousin worked together to concoct this recipe. They were constantly adding a pinch of this or changing a cup of that. My family and I feel we finally got it perfect, so it's nice to share," she says. What You Will Need 4 eggs 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 tsps baking powder 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 tbsp vanilla extract 4 cups sifted flour 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) 3/4 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup candied cherries (cut in half) cinnamon and sugar to sprinkle on top Preparation Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together (mix well). Form into three loaves on a large baking sheet. Use parchment paper to keep the loaves from sticking, or you can use a cooking spray. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown. When still warm, cut loaves into strips, on an angle. Let cool. Serve and Enjoy!

David Arquette on His Famous Family and Our Criminal Justice System

The Arquette family are a band of actors, artists, societal provocateurs and activists. With the image that David Arquette has crafted for himself as the family’s resident goofball, his newest film, a documentary titled, Survivor’s Guide to Prison, is a departure. It champions a cause close to David’s heart and gives a window into another side of the actor as concerned citizen and defender of personal freedom. Survivor’s Guide to Prison is currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play and YouTube.

that is outdated; it doesn’t work anymore. The punishment model has been proven not to be successful and it’s time for change. Matthew put a really amazing documentary together. My wife, Christina Arquette, and I watched an early cut and we both came on board as producers. We worked with Matthew and got a bunch of great people involved. Susan Sarandon is a producer on it, Gina Belafonte, Jesse Williams; just some really great people who have done a lot of great work to help change the prison system.

This documentary film is an eye opening, unsettling and informative look inside America’s criminal justice system and the prison industrial complex; an industry that has continued to grow exponentially with no signs of slowing down. You’ll be introduced to the players politicians, law enforcement officers, our judicial system and the prisonfor-profit industry. You’ll gain a clearer picture of the inner workings of mass incarceration in the United States of America. In addition, David and I discuss his famous family and how they have enriched his life and furthered his purpose.

Allison Kugel: So many people came on board for this film. Adrian Grenier is also a producer on the film. Danny Trejo, Ice T, Busta Rhymes, Danny Glover, Deepak Chopra, your sister Patricia Arquette, and on and on...

Allison Kugel: What led you to become involved as a producer on the documentary, Survivor’s Guide to Prison? David Arquette: I was first aware of the project because I’m friends with Matthew Cooke, who is an amazing Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, who worked on the documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and How to Make Money Selling Drugs. With Survivor’s Guide to Prison, Matthew highlights the prison system, how corrupt it is, and how it’s prison-for-profit. It’s a model

David Arquette: Danny Trejo, specifically, was so generous. He’s had family members who were directly affected by it, recently getting out of prison after being in for a crime they didn’t commit. He had also been in prison way back, a long time ago, when it was a different era, but it’s close to him. Danny sees what it does to communities. One of the things that’s so horrible about this current [Criminal Justice] system is that it takes parents away. The United States locks up more women than any other country in the world. You see the dangers of dismantling the family structure. The War on Drugs, and all these different initiatives to incarcerate people, have proven to be destructive to our society. Allison Kugel: Had Survivor’s Guide to Prison been made in the mid-1990s during the time of the OJ Simpson murder trial and subsequent verdict, how do you think the events of that day would have impacted the messaging and direction of this documentary? David Arquette: That was a flashpoint in our history, with the black community feeling targeted and feeling not heard, and they galvanized. There were many incidents during that time that were tragic. For example, when a young black woman was killed by a Korean business owner… there were a lot of issues during that time period that came up. The interesting thing is that this whole prison industrial complex has grown since then, and has become a profit stream for a lot of people. We still live in a country, and in a world, that has racial injustice all around us. It’s time to speak up and be honest about it, provide change and put money into communities that

have been held back. Allison Kugel: What do you hope the public gains from watching this film? David Arquette: It’s a little tonguein-cheek, the title, Survivor’s Guide to Prison. We say that, because we see people who have survived the prison system as just that, survivors. Just calling people “prisoners” or “inmates” and giving them numbers, it’s such a way of de-humanizing them. So, the idea of this film is to bring some compassion back into the discussion. That’s what we’re trying to do with the stories we highlight in the film about two men who were wrongly accused and went away for decades (Bruce Lisker and Reggie Cole). It totally transformed their lives and changed them on such a deeply painful, human level. Allison Kugel: Why is Hollywood so liberal and so fiercely against the conservative agenda? David Arquette: As artists, part of our job is to look around, see what’s going on, and to feel emotionally connected to injustice and what’s going on in the world. There are a lot of people in Hollywood who are very religious, very straight-laced, and not your typical Hollywood kind of liberal. They are more conservative, but they are good people. I think what it really comes down to is that we want good people to thrive. Allison Kugel: What do you foresee the Arquette family legacy being in decades to come? David Arquette: Ultimately, we’re performers; we’re entertainers. That’s what our past, and the history of our family is about. It’s been about entertaining people. It’s really what I’m passionate about. I like acting. I like making people laugh. I like the idea of somebody having a rough day at work and being able to zone out and watch something. On that note, this isn’t the film that does that (laughs). Allison Kugel: (Laughs) No. It’s an engaging film, it really pulls you in and it’s a must-see. But it’s not an easy watch. Parts of it are actually heartbreaking to watch. David Arquette: This film is about asking some important questions. That is another side of entertainment, shining light on darkness. Allison Kugel: Your grandfather was a comedian, your parents were actors, your siblings are actors. Is

that something you’re hoping will continue with your own children?

David Arquette: My daughter Coco (Arquette’s thirteen year old daughter with Courteney Cox) loves singing and performing. She’s really good at it, and she’s got a great head on her shoulders about it. We’ve kept everything unprofessional, like school plays and that sort of thing. We just want to allow her the time to grow up. Growing up in LA is already kind of slanted, and not completely grounded in reality. We want to allow her to have a childhood and not have to have the pressures of auditioning.

Allison Kugel: What is your favorite form of artistic expression these days?

Allison Kugel: What do you think is the right age developmentally and emotionally for your daughter, Coco, or any child, to go through the process of auditioning for acting roles? David Arquette: Totally an individual thing. If she was really pushing us, like, “Listen, mom, dad, I want to do this; I want to audition,” then I think there’s something to that... a kid who’s so passionate about that being their life’s goal. But she’s been cool about taking it at a slower pace. Allison Kugel: Out of all the Arquette siblings, who would you say is the most courageous, and why? David Arquette: My whole family, I just love and respect them all. Rosanna is doing so much to stand up to all of the horrors of what’s happening in Hollywood, and in businesses in general. She’s really behind the #MeToo movement, and I’m really proud of her for that. She also supports tons of different charities. Patricia is incredible. She’s got GiveLove.org, that helps places like Haiti with their sanitation system, and helps to provide clean water. Alexis was amazing; the way Alexis stood up for who she was. She was out and transgender before it was

David Arquette: I love painting. I took a Bob Ross instructional course, so I can teach people how to paint in the Bob Ross, wet on wet technique. Allison Kugel: Bob Ross, the Happy Trees guy? David Arquette: Yeah. I went to take a three-week course, where I learned how to teach his happy trees [painting] method. I work with an organization called Art of Elysium. We’re gonna go to hospitals and teach kids how to paint some happy trees. Painting is such a great stress reliever and calms my soul. But I love acting. When I get to work with really talented actors and directors, writers and producers, and dive into that and show what I’ve learned over my twenty-nine years of acting, I really love it. And when those things come together, and you get to work with great projects it really is a gift. subject areas. Each editor has his or her own area of interest, such as Laura who started as a sports writer and Alex who likes to bring historical and political context to his reporting. But they also try to expand their writing abilities by doing stories for all sections of the paper. Michael said he was particularly proud of a front-page feature story he recently wrote about a fellow student who is battling cancer. Alex was able to share his experiences about being on the campaign trail with Massapequa Park Mayor Jeff Pravato when he ran for state senate. Sabrina enjoys using her writing talents to contribute to Massapequa High School sports by highlighting the accomplishments of the teams and the student athletes. “It’s very satisfying to see yourself grow as a writer,” Michael said. “I try to give that push to other people.” Alex added that writing about a wide variety of issues has given himself and the staff a much greater appreciation for the freedoms of speech and the press granted in the First Amendment. He said

he is grateful to live in a country where people can express their viewpoints. The Chief Online is also an important component, giving the staff an introduction to digital journalism. Billy explained that the website not only includes content from the paper, but is used to published stories in between print issues. The website, www. thechiefonline.com, includes videos, polls and blogs. Ryan explained that the staff constantly looks for ways to improve the paper and the quality of writing. Those efforts were recently rewarded as The Chief garnered four Quill Awards at Adelphi University’s Press Day on Feb. 6. It received third place for best high school newspaper and third place for best layout. Michael earned third place for most outstanding reporter, and Laura and Peter Toutoulis earned second place for best news article. Even as the world becomes increasingly digital, the staff of Massapequa High School’s student newspaper, The Chief, say there is nothing better than seeing their work in print. The newspaper publishes several times throughout the school year and also maintains a strong online presence. The Chief is led by adviser Melissa Hornik and an editorial staff of six which includes Editor-in-Chief Michael Riggi, Managing Editor Laura Francavilla, Online Manager Billy Boye, Copy Editor Ryan Pagano, Sports Editor Sabrina Alberti and Business Manager Alex Carmenaty. There are also numerous student contributors who write news, features, entertainment and sports stories. “It’s really great to be able to contribute to both the community and the school,” said Michael, a senior, who joined the Chief staff in 10th grade after getting his first taste of journalism with the Berner Beacon in middle school and is now considering a career in writing. Michael and Laura work together to assign and edit stories, and plan and layout the paper using industry standard design software. Their goal is to create a product that focuses on school news but also includes stories about the district, the community and national and world issues of interest to teenagers. They say being active in school life and keeping their eyes and ears open helps them generate story ideas. The students take pride in creating a visually appealing center spread each issue, known in newspaper terms as a “double truck.” For the January issue with course selection was on the horizon, students wrote about their favorite elective classes across the different

Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 27, 2019

Dear Fellow Residents: March is here and the weather Gods have been good to us so far this year. There have been a few small storms and our Department of Public Works have done a great job making sure the streets were safe for all of us. But March can play tricks on us and I am sure that Mother Nature is not done with us. She usually sends us a March surprise, but I can assure you that our crews will be ready for whatever she sends our way. As we finally come into spring, I cannot wait to see the flowers bloom and the trees begin to blossom. It will also be nice to hear the birds start to sing. It just feels like life starts up again in the spring. As the weather gets warmer, the Village will continue with its repaving program. We are also in the process of engineering the parking lot behind IGA. It has been many years since this parking lot was looked at and the Board feels it is time to repair this lot.

I can also report to you that our Village is in excellent fiscal shape with a bond rating of Aa2 from Moody’s. This is due to the continued hard work that this Board and Administration puts in every day to make sure this is one of the best run villages on Long Island. Our business district continues to thrive. We have some of the most successful businesses on Long Island. When a store front opens it is almost filled immediately. It is successful because of all of our residents that frequent the Village and bring their family and friends. And finally, we have our Village events that will start up with spring, beginning with our annual Earth Day celebration that brings in many volunteer groups, scout troops and local residents to help keep our Village clean. And as we head into May we have our Memorial Day parade. This is a day when we come out and honor all of our veterans for all they have done for us. It is because of them that we enjoy all the freedoms we enjoy today. In closing I wish everyone a warm end of winter and a warm spring. Residents are encouraged to vote at Village Hall, 151 Front Street, from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm. Budget Hearing The Mayor’s 2019/2020 Preliminary Budget will be presented at a Public Hearing to be held April 8th, 2019 in Village Hall at 8:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.

Garbage Collection Garbage should not be placed out for collection before 5:00 pm the evening before collection day and should be retrieved not later than 8:00 pm on collection day. Containers must be secured with a tight cover. All garbage cans and containers, when not placed out for collection, shall be kept at the side of the house or at the back of the house and not in front of the houseline.

Need a Plumber For your protection, the Village requires that all plumbers doing work in the Village be licensed plumbers and registered with the Building Department. To check to see if a plumber is registered, or for a list of registered plumbers, call the Building Department at 798-0244 ext. 121.

SMOKE ALARMS

• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. • Place a smoke alarm on every level including inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Interconnect the alarms so when one sounds, they all sound. • Install smoke alarms and alert devices to assist family members who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Alert devices, such as strobe lights, flash when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers may be useful to wake a person who is sleeping. The shakers are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm and shake people awake to warn them of a fire. • Test your alarms at least once a month. Press each test button to make sure it is working. • Review the Consumer Product Safety Commission website, www.cpsc.gov, for information on recalled smoke alarms.

HOME ESCAPE PLAN

• Plan your home escape; including two ways out of each room. Never use the elevator unless directed by the fire department. • If there is a fire, get outside quickly and stay outside. Then call 798-0040. • If you can’t get outside call 798-0040. Let the fire department know you can’t get outside. Wave a light-colored cloth or a flashlight near the window, but don’t open the windows. • If there is smoke, use your second way out. If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke.

One Day Parking Permits One day resident commuter parking permits are available for purchase at Village Hall, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Current automobile registration is required. The fee for the one day permit is $1.00.

Mommy & Me Program Brady Park The Village is pleased to offer to residents the Mommy & Me Program at Brady Park. Registration for the 2019 Summer Session and 2019/2020 Fall Session will be held on Monday, April 1st between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Brady Park Community Center. Classes meet on Wednesdays at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. There is no registration fee, proof of Village residency is required, class size is limited and enrollment is first come first served. You can obtain more information about this wonderful program by calling 799-0948.

Building & Zoning Information Under the New York State building codes, most work done to your home will require a Building Permit. Before you start any project, call the Building Department at 798-0244 ext. 112 or 120 to ask whether or not the proposed work requires a permit.

Dumpsters On Private Property Dumpsters on private property will require a permit. An application for a Dumpster Permit can be obtained from Village Hall. The dumpster must meet certain setbacks and is limited in the time it is permitted to stay on the property. The fee is $25.00. Questions concerning this new law can be referred to the Village at 798-0244, ext. 113.

For Sale Any sign erected on residential property requires a permit including For Sale signs. Call Village Hall at 798-0244 for an application.

Don’t Block The Sidewalk - Be Nice To Pedestrians New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits cars from blocking the sidewalk. Pedestrians must walk in the street when cars block the sidewalk creating an unsafe situation. 354910CN0313

LANDSCAPERS

All landscapers must be licensed in the Village of Massapequa Park. Landscapers cannot perform work earlier than 8:00 am on weekdays and 9:00 am on Saturdays. No work is permitted on Sundays. In additon, landscapers must dispose of all clippings when leaving the job sites.

SIDEWALKS & TREE TRIMMING

Residents are reminded that sidewalks and tree trimming are the responsibility of the homeowner. Sidewalks should be kept in good repair to eliminate any dangerous situations. Trees should be trimmed over the sidewalks to 8 feet so that overhanging limbs will not interfere with passers-by. Trees over the street should be trimmed to allow the street sweeper to pass. Any questions concerning sidewalks or trees can be referred to Residential Services in Village Hall at 708-0244 ext. 113.

VILLAGE TAXES ARE DUE

Residents are reminded that Village taxes are due June 1st through July 1st, 2019. Penalties accrue as of July 2nd. New residents should verify that tax bills are being sent to the proper party. Also, residents who recently satisfied their mortgage or refinanced, should contact Village Hall to ensure that tax bills are addressed properly. Questions concerning taxes may be referred to 798-0244 ext. 117 or 115.

PARKING PERMITS

Massapequa Park parking permits expire on May 31, 2019. A renewal application will be mailed to each person who presently has a commuter parking permit. Parking permits will be sold at Village Hall during business hours beginning May 1st. Applicants must present their current automobile registration.

EXTENDED HOURS

For the convenience of residents, Village Hall will remain open Thursday evening until 8:00 pm during the months of May and June. Residents may apply for parking permits, garage sale permits, block party permits, hunting and fishing licenses, pay taxes and obtain general information. The Court will remain closed and the Building Department will only distribute necessary forms.
