While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOWING UP AND VOTING By Dr. Cynthia Paulis Mayoral Candidate For Massapequa Park

When I was a medical director of a trauma center I ran a very organized emergency room in an inner city where guns and gangs were part of the territory. You had to make smart, quick decisions in an efficient manner because people’s lives were at stake. One of the tools of assessing a persons’ level of consciousness was called the Glascow Coma Scale (GCS). It measured eye, verbal and motor skills and each category was given a score. Fifteen was the highest score a patient could get which meant they were alert and oriented to people, places and things. VOTE DR. CYNTHIA PAULIS

I always found it interesting that just by virtue of showing up and having a pulse you scored a three, the lowest score you can get. If one were to score our elected officials they would no doubt be lower on the scale because they failed to be alert and oriented to the things going on around them, like safety of the community. Some might rate a three because they just showed up, period. Others would classify them as Missing in Action. One of the takeaway points of the Bail reform meeting was how crime is on the rise and its becoming more violent. Let’s face the reality; we never had dead bodies from MS 13 showing up in our beautiful preserve or shootings on our streets. Drugs are the biggest catalyst for these crimes and unless we as a community start taking this seriously and get involved we will lose our community. I don’t want to see that happen for Massapequa Park. I don’t want to worry about getting shot in my own home because gangs with guns are now in our neighborhoods and keep getting out of jail. I have met so many wonderful, bright, committed and caring residents on the campaign trail who want to get involved but they haven’t been given the opportunity and when they try, they run into an elected official with a GCS of 3, a pulse is present but no reaction. This is why voting is important, EVERY VOTE MATTERS. When I was a child, my mother always took me to the voting poles and explained to me why voting was very important. As a first generation American she emphasized how significant it was to have your voice heard in a free country. She spoke of how her parents risked their lives to escape communism and how proud they were to come to this country and be Americans. We all have stories similar to this and the accomplishments of our families and the war heroes our relatives became standing up for freedom. On March 18 it’s now your turn to go to the polls and let your voice be heard of how you want your local village government to be run. I will be there to stand up for you and the safety of this community. You now have three options to vote for who you want to be Mayor. I am the only candidate self-funding, and not controlled by a party and who will be there as a FULL TIME Mayor for a village that has some serious issues we never faced in the past. Change brings new ideas and a new direction which is long overdue. As many of you know if you have been reading my weekly articles I decided to run for Mayor of Massapequa Park after my street was turned into a crime scene when the bloods gang showed up with semiautomatic guns and shot 24 bullets into my neighbor’s home, trying to kill a man who just did a drug deal and ran into their yard. When the police rang my doorbell at 2 am asking for help I had one of two choices, not answer the door or open the door and get involved. Stepping up and getting involved was the right thing to do. This concerned the safety of our community and I worked with the detectives with the aid of my cameras and my neighbors to piece together the clues which helped apprehend some of the shooters. Unfortunately bail reform has released them FOUR times. One of them was just arrested again after injuring three people, one being a child after shooting up houses, but because no one died it is classified as “reckless endangerment” and they are released. I attended a Bail reform meeting last night sponsored by Legislators Kennedy and Walker. Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and Lt. Brian Sullivan gave an excellent presentation on the challenges facing police when an arrest is made but this new law releases criminals back out into our neighborhoods. Unfortunately the meeting was poorly attended and five of the eight candidates running for village office were NOT in attendance. It made me wonder how serious they are about leading the village government if they can’t even show up for such an important meeting. While these folks are busy putting up lawn signs and window and cab displays it begs the question, WHERE ARE THEY? They missed having their names picked out of a bag to determine where they are on the ballot. They missed firefighters being honored for their bravery at a Massapequa Chamber of Commerce meeting and ironically one of them running is a volunteer firefighter. The County Officials, Town of Oyster Bay Officials were all present and yet no one from this team who also works full time for the Town of Oyster Bay, were there. Now a bail reform meeting that can have serious long term effects on the safety of our community was missed by an entire team running for office. WHERE THE HECK ARE THEY?!!

New York Is Home To Historic St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate. Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved. Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities. Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent. Historical documentation puts some of the earliest St. Patrick’s Day fanfare at various places in the United States, such as St. Augustine, Fl., Boston and New York City. In fact, New York is the site of the world’s largest St. Patrick’s Day parade. According to History. com, the first parade honoring the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick was held

by Irish soldiers serving in the British army in 1762. Back then, green attire was a symbol of Irish pride but was banned in Ireland, which was still governed by the British. However, on the streets of New York, homesick soldiers stationed in the colonies had the freedom to sing Irish songs, wear green, play the pipes to familiar tunes, and speak Gaelic. The parade was a boisterous time to celebrate Irish culture. New York City became home to a large number of Irish immigrants. As the number of Irish immigrants in New York increased, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued to evolve and

even spread, as immigrants started to call cities other than New York home. Today, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest parades in the world. The day begins with High Holy Mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral at 8:30 a.m. Then the parade begins along 5th Avenue, running from 44th Street to 79th Street from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2020 Grand Marshall is James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

A Saint Who’s Not A Saint

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only. Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died. St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233. St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons. The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions. Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.
