To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, March 15th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S.

Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this March at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have dwindled during

this COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Messages From The Heart After learning about the art of letter writing, second graders in Meggin Hall’s class at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District put their new skills into practice. They did so by writing letters to the men and women who have served in the United States military.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman

Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted

to the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. Town Seeks Volunteers for March 27th Dune Day at TOBAY Beach Social-Distanced Event Protects Environment

Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 27th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and

environment by planting stalks of dune grass. This year, our event takes a social-distanced approach as volunteers must wear a mask and remain socially distant for the duration of the event.” The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier island for future generations, Volunteers work alongside Town officials and crews, as well as residents from across the Town who share an interest in helping preserve TOBAY Beach. Dunes along our south shore continue to face

environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds. Woman’s Club Of Massapequa

In 1924, the Woman’s Club of Massapequa was created to promote educational, social, and civic development. In its nearly 100 years it has witnessed many events, the Depression, WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War etc. Despite the difficult conditions Covid-19 presents today the club and its good works continues. While not able to hold the monthly general membership meetings, the Executive Board under the leadership of President Maureen Larisch, hold

meetings by conference call. Approximately 15 ladies have joined in these to guide the club’s movements. Del Genovese, Director of the Child Welfare Department, is in contact with houses of worship and schools in Massapequa and surrounding communities when families with children are in urgent need of assistance. This February, as during holidays, all members may participate in a food drive to benefit Our Lady of Lourdes pantry. With guidance from

Massapequa High School, a monetary award to a graduating Senior who has overcome challenges will be presented. For several years now and continuing in 2021, member Rowan Brooks will donate an additional award. Woman’s Club of Massapequa will persevere as it has for nearly a century rewarding members with civic awareness, philanthropy and social engagement. Making a Difference to Combat the Opioid Epidemic YES & MTAC Deliver Naloxone Training Across the Massapequas

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is partnering with YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) to provide Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention Education for families and concerned community members on Thursday, March 25th at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Expanding the awareness and availability of naloxone is a key part of YESCCC and MTAC’s public health response to the opioid epidemic. YESCCC continues to deliver FREE opioid prevention education and naloxone training across the Massapequas including local governments, first responders, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, namely slowed or stopped breathing. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose and, when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service).
