Andrea recently partnered with the Town Board, AMVETS Post 88 in Massapequa and Veterans Suicide Awareness & Remembrance FlagCorp to unveil a very powerful

22 A Day Memorial Sign remembering American veterans who we lost to suicide. This memorial sign recognizes an estimated 22 veterans a day lost to suicide and the toll it takes upon family members and loved ones. “Thanks to incredible leaders like Andrea, this sign is visible to all and reflects the lives and struggles of veterans who have tragically taken their own lives,” said Supervisor Saladino. “It is also a reminder that much needs to be done to address the

critically important issue, and it also honors the legacy of these veterans who stood up in defense of American Freedom.” Veterans facing mental health issues should call the Veteran’s Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 ext. 1; if you have hearing loss, call TTY: 1-800-799-4889. Kennedy (front row, second from the right) and New York State Assemblyman John Mikulin (second row, far right) to congratulate Cubmaster Eric Stashin and Cub Scout Pack 590 for a successful annual Pinewood Derby held at Lockhart Elementary School. The Pinewood Derby teaches Cub Scouts about craftsmanship, sportsmanship and respect for others through friendly competition. Supervisor Saladino commended the members and leaders of Cub Scout Pack 590 for their hard work, dedication and integrity, which serve as an inspiration to all.

Students Put A Modern Twist On Books First, they went on a fact-finding mission, then they tapped into their technology prowess. Fourth graders in Lisa Burke’s class at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District explored nonfiction writing by picking topics of personal interest, then making digital books.

Students used both print books and credible online resources to gather information on their topics, which included animals, astronomy and holidays. They created their projects, which were typically six to eight pages, using the Book Creator app. Ms. Burke said that students enjoyed using

Book Creator because it allowed them to customize their designs, picking the fonts, colors and layout. The books needed to include text features such as pictures with captions, a table of content, glossary and a dedication page. Many students also chose to embed videos to liven up their digital books.

The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.

Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more eﬃcient, and increase resilience to climate change. A signiﬁcant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building eﬃciency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy speciﬁcally, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.

It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without signiﬁcantly increasing ﬁnancial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-eﬃcient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state.

Councilwoman Maier Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive In Partnership With LI Cares Councilman Laura Maier announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in

2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster

Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many

beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilwoman Maier. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms our Waterways.’

“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions

should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay, two organizations that greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping

protect our waterways,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides a great opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of plastic pollutions in our waterways with the potential of winning some great prizes.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200

gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, April 1st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown.com/ postercontest. Submissions

should be made on 12’x18’ poster paper. Students name and school should be printed clearly at the bottom. Flu Season Is Underway In New York; How You Can Protect Residents Who Are Most Vulnerable Flu season is officially here in New York, with the New York State Department of Health reporting ten consecutive weeks of widespread flu diagnoses. To help prevent the flu in people who are at high risk for severe complications, the American Lung Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, released a toolkit specifically for caregivers of adults 65 and over through their “Fend Off Flu” campaign. Influenza (flu) is a serious and highly contagious

disease that can have severe health consequences for all, and especially for vulnerable adults 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions. The new toolkit is a resource to educate caregivers including healthcare providers and personnel in long-term care settings about the flu and the importance of vaccination to protect adults 65 and older. “Nationally, 50-70% of flu hospitalizations were in patients over 65. Flu shots are especially important for healthcare workers and

caregivers of vulnerable adults,” said David Ackman, M.D., Medicaid Medical Director from Empire BlueCross BlueShield. “Not only will getting a flu shot help reduce the chance of catching the illness, but it will also help reduce the severity if it’s contracted. Especially for people with underlying health conditions, the flu can turn into a serious, even deadly, illness.” During the 2019 – 2020 flu season, it is estimated the flu sent approximately 380,000 people to the

hospital with related complications and caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in the United States, which is why getting vaccinated should be a priority. The flu vaccine is the best protection against contracting and spreading the illness. “Especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, routine vaccination is more important than ever,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in metro New York. “Flu vaccinations

have been in use for more than 50 years, with hundreds of millions of Americans safely receiving them. It’s recommended that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, but they are especially important for the 3,026,000 people in New York with lung disease, as well as their family members and caregivers.” In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends these everyday preventive actions. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least

20 seconds. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your elbow. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. The “Caregiver Flu Toolkit” is a comprehensive guide to educate caregivers of adults 65 and over about flu and the importance of vaccination to help protect them from contracting the flu. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the flu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. No two cancer patients are the same, so those concerned about COVID-19 and the vaccinations against it are urged to discuss those concerns and their options with their cancer care team
