The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
It’s not every day that you come across a group of people who are so selfless and who work tirelessly to give others the opportunity to have something that isn’t even a necessity. I happened to come across passionate and compassionate people like this and knew I had to feature what they do! Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
program is their On-Site Party Program, which provides monthly parties at the shelters they serve and this celebrates all children with birthdays in that month. The second program is their Birthday-in-a-Box Program, which provides a party packed into a birthday box, which is delivered to families in domestic violence and scattered sites. In 2018, Birthday Wishes of Long Island served 669 girls and 619 boys with more than 6,500 homemade cupcakes, more than 6,000 goody bags, 1,200 craft and activity kits, 7,728 gifts wrapped and delivered and more than 1,100 Birthday-ina-Box Kits built by volunteers.
All of their birthday parties are run by carefully trained and backgroundchecked volunteers, who participate as individuals, families and groups. Their grassroots philosophy fosters the spirit of volunteerism and community service in adults, children and families, who donate their time and resources! Birthday Wishes is the first organization in the entire nation, and the only one on Long Island, to provide this invaluable service.
Birthday Wishes began in Massachusetts and after the first national news story released featuring Birthday Wishes, a social worker from Long Island was so inspired that she contact the co-founder to bring the joy of a birthday party to the homeless community here on Long Island. Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in one shelter, and today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!
A great way to support Birthday Wishes is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington. This is a fun evening of chef tastings from top Long Island restaurants, as well as terrific silent auctions and over 75 raffles. They had time to read books of their choosing by flashlight and in tents, build words from Scrabble tiles, write words in salt, play sight word beanbag toss and read stories digitally on Chromebooks, among other activities. The 100th day of school was also an opportunity
to look into the future. Students completed “When I Am 100 Years Old” writing assignments. Before putting pen to paper, students discussed what they think the world would be like a little more than 90 years from now, and what they could do to live long enough to be 100.

Catching Up with Oscar & Emmy Winning Actress Regina King By Allison Kugel
With an acting career spanning four decades and multiple awards, Regina King has effortlessly embodied countless memorable characters across the big and small screens.

From thought provoking films like Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Jerry Maguire and Ray; to lighter fare like the Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality franchises, Regina King brings a sparkle to every role she’s tackled. On the small screen, King’s presence in past television series like Southland, The Boondocks, The Leftovers, Shameless, and her Emmy-winning turn in American Crime, have highlighted some of the more significant social issues of our time. Wherever art is imitating life in a significant way, Regina King has been tapped to play a pivotal role in the project. On February 24th, King took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her stand-out role in the critically acclaimed film, If Beale Street Could Talk, now playing in theaters. Prior to the Academy Awards, Regina King and I discussed her Emmy-winning role as Latrice Butler, the grieving mother of a teenage son who is the victim of a death by auto hit and run perpetrated by a group of Jersey City police officers. Allison Kugel: What drew you to playing Latrice Butler in Seven Seconds? Regina King: I was drawn to the role of [prosecutor] KJ Harper (played by Clare-Hope Ashitey), and [series creator] Veena Sud was sure that she wanted me for the role of Latrice. I liked the pilot script and decided to take that dive into the emotional pool. Allison Kugel: You play the mother
of a teenage boy who is killed by a police officer. What was your process in tackling this role? Regina King: Being a mother myself, and the mother of a black young man, there are certain fears you have that are unique to having a black child in America. You have fears as a parent when your kids are growing up, because you can’t control everything. But there are those experiences that are specific to black children that are not the same for others. You experience a bit of it, yourself, as a child growing up in America. You then carry that perspective with you throughout your life. So, I had that going into this role. I also spoke to a mother whose son was murdered by a police officer. Hearing her pain up close and personal, and her feeling safe enough to share it with me, I would say that combination was how Latrice was birthed. Allison Kugel: Is the story a fictional account or based on true events? Regina King: It was based on the truth as far as the regard for black American kids and the law, and how they are regarded in America. That part of it is true, of course. So many examples have had similar outcomes to this story, but it was not taken from one specific person’s story. Allison Kugel: Do you think a series like Seven Seconds has the power to impact hearts and minds for societal change? Regina King: I think [so]. What’s reflective for me is not reflective for you. Seeing it in a television show or in a movie creates an opportunity for each of us to see the other’s perspective. I feel that the series American Crime (the ABC series for which King won an Emmy) was very similar in that way. Allison Kugel: Do you take a role like this home with you? Regina King: I tried not to take it home with me. But again, a bit of this lives with you. It is the narrative of a part of the fabric of what America is. It took a lot out of me; I’ll be honest. It was the closest to an experiential role I’ve ever had. I’ve known people who have been victims of police brutality, but no one who was closer than a friend or a distant family member. Because it was a friend or a distant family member, I wasn’t with them in their day-to-day struggle of what that experience brings. You go through life hoping that you never personally have an experience like that, but you know that the odds are greater than
not that you will, because of who you are. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your 2nd Emmy win for the Netflix limited series, Seven Seconds. In recent years, you are winning awards left and right? How does each time feel? Regina King: All three times being nominated felt different. But there is nothing like the first anything, right? It’s totally surreal. The second time is kind of like, “Nah-uh, really?! How did I find a hundred-dollar bill again in the exact same place?!” It’s one of those feelings. Not to be frivolous about it, but it’s like, what are the odds? Allison Kugel: What do you see as your higher purpose in all that you do, from parenting your son to your work. And what spiritual philosophy do you subscribe to? Regina King: Overall, just trying to walk in my truth. I recently did a panel talk (Entertainment Weekly’s Women Who Kick Ass Comic Con Panel) and [actress] Chloe Bennet said something that I definitely subscribe to. She said, “At this moment in time, I can feel a certain way and say a certain thing, and then in 2022 I might contradict that, just because I’m in a different place at that point.” For me, I can only be in my truth right now, in this moment. If I am walking in that truth, if I share an opinion right now about something, in the year 2022 I will not say, “I didn’t say that back then.” I would know I said it, because in that moment it was true for me. Allison Kugel: Right. You would say, that was me then. I saw this beautiful tribute on your Instagram feed to actress Marla Gibbs. Marla gave you your first big job playing her daughter on the show 227 in the 1980s, when you were fourteen years old. You thanked her for all that she did for you as your mentor. You say, among many other things, “She taught me how to be a professional.” I want to ask you about some other influential people you’ve worked with over the years, and what your takeaway was from working with these people. Let’s start with Tupac Shakur, who you worked with in 1993’s Poetic Justice. Regina King: I would say he’s a man that walked in his truth. Man, did he ever! That would be the biggest takeaway, in that he was just unapologetic, and it was beautiful.
Allison Kugel: And working with Tom Cruise in 1996’s Jerry Maguire? Regina King: An example of a consummate professional. If you hear anybody say that they don’t like that guy, hmmm, I don’t know. I’d have to go back and look in the books on that person. He’s a good guy, and he is a professional. He is that same example of what Marla [Gibbs] was, and I saw from him that it exists when you’re on that mega level. Allison Kugel: And working with Jamie Foxx in 2004’s Ray? Regina King: Jamie is super talented. The first thing that came to my mind when you said “Jamie,” is that he’s a caring guy. He takes great care with things that he does, and with the people that he works with. That’s the reason why he’s so good at embodying a character, because he takes care with the details. Allison Kugel: I also came across a picture you posted with your son. You were waiting in line together to vote in the June 2018 primaries, and it was his first time voting. Finish this sentence for me: “I hope that in my son’s lifetime…” Regina King: The first thing that came to my mind is that he wants to have children, but he goes back and forth between asking if it’s irresponsible to bring children into this world or not. And I see where he is coming from with that. Allison Kugel: Tell him that you have great faith in the next generation to lift the consciousness of this planet. Regina King: Oh, I tell him that all the time, that I have great faith in him and his generation. Literally, from year to year with the conversations that we have, it goes from, “When I have kids,” to, “Man, I don’t know if I want to bring a kid into all this.” Just because of certain things that happen in the world. It’s the same reason you
don’t want to turn on the news half the time. Allison Kugel: If there’s one thing the kids from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida showed me, it’s that with the younger generations coming up, there is a different level of consciousness, and it gives me great hope. Regina King: What I love is that they’re able to articulate their passion in a way that is open. Whereas, I feel like a lot of our generation, we weren’t able to articulate our anger as effectively. There is a maturity present with the younger generation, but they still have that passion. It makes me more confident in what they can accomplish. Digital Books Books don’t always have to be in hard copy form, fourth-graders recently learned at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students created their own nonfiction digital books to enhance their research skills and improve their technological abilities. Te c h n o l o g y learning coach Vickie Ahearn partnered with

fourth-grade teachers Lisa Burke, Monica Guardino and Colleen Nicholas. Students used the program Book Creator on their iPads. They were able to pick any topic, and used both books and online resources such as PebbleGo and World Book to find information. Popular subjects included animals, athletes, historical figures, places and sports teams. In addition
to providing thorough information on their topics, students had to include text features such as a table of contents, titles, photos and captions, and dedication and about the author pages. Children could organize their books in any non-fiction format of their choice such as a narrative, chapters, A through Z facts or questions and answers.

Peach Crisp
By Helene Kolotkin of Deer Park Helene Kolotkin of Deer Park enjoys making her Peach Crisp recipe as winter begins to give way to the beginning of the spring season. According to Helene, "The recipe was given to me by a neighbor of mine who moved to Long Island from California, so I guess you could say this recipe originated on the west coast." Once spring rolls around, Helene knows it's time to start making her Peach Crisp. "It's my offiical marker that spring is right around the corner, and it's one of my favorite desserts!" Helene recommends serving her Peach Crisp warm, with vanilla ice cream. What You Will Need 4-6 cups peeled and sliced peaches 1 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 tspn nutmeg
1/4 tspn salt 1/2 tspn cinnamon 1/2 cup butter 2 tbsp water grated rind and juice of 1/2 a lemon Preparation Mix flour, sugars, nutmeg, salt and cinnamon. Mix in butter with a fork until coarse crumbs are formed. Place peaches in a greased 9x9 baking dish. Cover fruit mixture with crumbs and pat down. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Then uncover, and bake for another 30 minutes until top is browned. Serve and Enjoy!

Fifth-graders in the Massapequa School District’s six elementary schools pride themselves on serving as role models for their younger counterparts. Buddy activities are popular with students, who enjoy interacting with peers from down the hall or even a different side of the building. At McKenna Elementary School, first-grade and fifth-grade classes come together about once a month for cooperative learning such as arts and crafts, writing projects or partner reading. Firstgraders Tusha Crescenzo’s class look forward to their time with Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel’s fifthgraders. “The children can’t wait to get together,” Ms. Crescenzo said,as the buddies worked collaboratively on colorful cards for the Valentines for
Veterans program. “The fifth-graders are mentors to them.” Before the holidays, each fifth-grader made a gift out of their handprint for his or her younger buddy. The class went to the room when the first-graders were at lunch, so they would return to see the surprises on their desks. Birch Lane Elementary School kindergarten teacher Jennifer Emberley and fifth-grade teacher Susan Murphy have watched their students become technology buddies. They have been participating in activities throughout the year using Chromebooks with support from technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn. As an initial lesson, the seasoned Chromebook users showed the kindergartners how to log in and access different resources. In November, they made Flipgrid videos
The Massapequa Preserve has three new detailed trail maps thanks to the ambitious Eagle Scout project of Massapequa High School student Trevor Kapuvari of Troop 660. The maps include details of the paved trails, foot trails, lakes, streams, and
entry and exit points. Trevor led over 15 scouts in multiple expeditions to map out the preserve in detail and to scale. The maps are located at the Preserve entrances by Ocean Avenue & Merrick Road, Brady Park, and Mansfield Park, and are framed in tall wood
structures. This project was coordinated in conjunction with the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums and Troop 660. These trail maps will be extremely helpful for the many visitors to the preserve throughout the year.

You look at other people’s circumstances, and lament your own unfortunate patterns. As hard as this is to hear (although, it may be a relief), those pesky repetitive patterns are part of your soul’s contract that you voluntarily constructed before you arrived here. That mystery of mysteries, “Why is this so easy for her, and so difficult for me?” Or, “Why do I have to battle this illness? Why me?” It’s not random. These are the things you came into this life to work on and master. When you acknowledge that truth and make the connection, you can then begin to view these life challenges as just that, an interesting challenge that needs to be tackled head on so that you can move past it and not have to repeat it. There is an age-old debate about destiny versus free will. The truth is, both exist harmoniously
and synergistically. Here is a good analogy to help it make sense: the hand of cards you are dealt is your contract, otherwise known as your “destiny.” The way you play that hand is your free will. There are signposts along the highway to guide you, but ultimately free will reigns supreme. This means that once we incarnate into human form and we are up against worldly emotions, ego and myriad distractions; people, places and circumstances will present themselves to give you the opportunity to master the lesson, but the choice is yours to make. Here is an example: A person charts into their contract to live a life of material privilege, and then in midlife they lose nearly all of their material possessions and must rebuild from scratch. They can either choose to transcend their ego, take personal inventory and put one foot in front of the other to rebuild in a positive and constructive way while realigning their values; or they can fall into a permanent pit of despair, or perhaps, choose to turn to illegal activities to rebuild their wealth.
Another person may chart an addiction into their contract with the soul’s intention of overcoming the addition and going on to help others who are struggling with addiction. Or, they can choose to give in to that addiction and live a life of self-harm and selfindulgence, and ultimately see their life and health deteriorate. Upon their life review once they have crossed back into spirit, they will either review a life with much soul growth, or realize they didn’t make the progress they had intended, and they will want to return at some point and try again. When faced with life’s hardships, understand the work that must be done to overcome and transcend that particular piece of karma that your soul has chosen to come here to work on. There are many resources provided for us in the form of signs and synchronicities, spiritual guidance, knowledge, and people to help guide you on your journey. And you wouldn’t have chosen this path if your soul didn’t know it was up for the challenge.

Fairfield Elementary School fifth-graders in Allison Martin’s class worked with kindergartners in Melanie Bonagura’s class in Book Creator. The buddies used the digital learning tool on Chromebooks to write stories about what they would do if they were stuck in a snow globe. The children served as the main characters of their stories, and added narration along with photos and videos.

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns (NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home. According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas—up from 79 percent in 2000. Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on the environment. The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and
slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone. Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the man-made surface area in urban areas. When analyzing effective UHI mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or
all of the projected future warming trends. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent
ordinances calling for cool roof technology, 3M developed Cool Roofing Granules. These granules are used in shingles that can be energy efficient, solar reflective and economically friendly. This technology can reduce urban heating as well as lower energy consumption in climates with year-round cooling needs. In addition, many of the shingles that contain 3M Cool Granules meet Energy Star requirements, making them the premier choice for green building. Further, the granules are available in a wide variety of rich colors that can create the perfect shingle color blend. The Eradication of Smog Another problem in urban areas is smog
pollution, caused by a buildup of nitrogen oxides in the air. An estimated four in 10 Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. To combat this growing concern, 3M recently launched Smog-reducing Granules, which help remove smog pollution using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, the granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. As sunlight hits the shingles, radicals are generated, transforming nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions, thereby improving air quality. “3M is leading the way with roofing technology
solutions for improving environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M. “The roofing granules are a first for residential asphalt shingles. Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into
environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled.
Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the
straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being
recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make building materials. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for
recycling. Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households— more than 72.5 million homes—through curbside and drop-off programs.
