children’s playground is located bordering on homes and creeks is a dumping ground for MS 13 hacked up bodies. People are terrified to go in there now. I was surrounded by a gang of kids trying to steal my bike a few years ago. I stopped going in there. Other neighbors tell me they are too terrified to go in there. Our village deserves better than what we have been receiving. It lacks leadership and is tone deaf to the issues people have been bringing to their attention. Many people have shared with me their frustrations how nothing ever gets done. One man I met at the night meeting has been complaining to the village about his street on Philadelphia Ave that has been flooding for years and now has glass coming up from the pavement. For FIVE YEARS they have been addressing this. Nothing has happened. I went and looked for myself. Sure enough glass is coming up everywhere, across the road is filthy swamp with trash dumped, standing water sits in a marsh, a set up for Zika virus, and I have seen pictures of the flooding. Nothing, it’s been put on hold. I listened as people tell me they are afraid to complain to the village because then they get targeted. I know first hand when I complained about my property being destroyed by a neighbor who turned out to be a renter I was targeted with nasty letters and a summons claiming my hedge was over the sidewalk even though there were no sidewalks on the two houses on the block. Ironically the village hall side property had hedges that were so overgrown you couldn’t even see the sidewalks. I filmed a pregnant woman walking out in the street with her toddler because she couldn’t walk on the sidewalk. There are no hedges there anymore and a fence has been installed so now you can walk on the sidewalk. My summons was dropped. How many people are willing to stand up and fight for causes? I will because I’ve done it before. Our village deserves smart, strong leadership from someone who is committed to working FULL time for your community, not dropping by for a photo op. The issues we face now are serious problems that deserve FULL time attention. I am a strong independent candidate, not owned by any political machine, self-funded and committed to fixing some of these serious problems plaguing our community. It’s time for the apathy, complacency and corruption to be kicked to the curb, and its time you have a voice without repercussions. In spite of all the obstacles thrown my way, I am still forging forward running for Mayor to give you the voice you need, and together we can turn these problems around. Now for the first time you have choices for the Mayor. You have seen the track record of these candidates. Now it’s up to you. As a business woman, veteran, medical director, entrepreneur, with a proven track record of community service, you now have someone in your corner who is listening. I grew up in Massapequa Park and from the age of six to now 66 I have watched the changes take place but within the last 18 years there has been a serious deterioration taking hold of our community. Our roads that were always beautifully maintained are now full of dangerous pot holes. Take a look at Cartwright Blvd., the road school busses take to go to Massapequa High School, Berner Middle School and Birch Lane Elementary. The pot holes are so deep that they can blow out tires, break axles and destroy shocks. Do you really want your children’s safety put at risk? The yellow dividing lane has been worn away. Anyone trying to cross that road could easily trip and fall, and the village would be on the hook for a law suit. The Village just spent $22,000 for a company to put concrete and brick on a triangular green spot for a monument that is only visited twice a year yet they couldn’t fill the pot holes? It’s important to spend your taxes wisely and the safety and the welfare of the community comes first. If there is additional money left then monuments can be addressed. Our once safe streets are now crime ridden with robberies, home invasions, stores getting robbed at gun and knife point. What shocked me was how few of you knew of the terror which invaded our community on October 28, 2019 at 1:22 am when a car pulled up across the street from my home and two men from the Bloods gang with semiautomatic guns unloaded 24 bullets in 28 seconds intent on killing a man who just did a drug deal and jumped into my innocent neighbor’s backyard. The house was riddled with bullets that rang out through the night narrowly missing killing my neighbors. Anyone one of us could have died in our own homes that night. Our streets were roped off as a crime scene, yellow tape wrapped around the pole where school children wait for the bus and commuters walk to the train station. When the police came to my door at 2 am asking for my help with the aid of my cameras I stepped up to help and continued to help them with clues along with my neighbor. I called and texted the mayor, his phone was turned off. When I saw the inside of my neighbor’s home destroyed by the bullets, I contacted the Mayor and told him he needs to see and talk to my neighbor and I also asked for police protection. We had a SWAT team in place 24 hours for four days. I fed them every eight hours. NONE of the trustees came by, even though the village hall where a press conference was held is just a five minute walk to the crime scene, yet they came to campaign here two months later. A media circus was in front of our homes from all the networks, yet NO ONE from the village checked if we were ok or called. Crickets, the way it was that horrible night before the bullets pierced the silence and were heard from blocks away. Where were they? Asleep, waking up, preparing for their full time jobs, or campaigning for another office. I watched and listened to the myth as they declared Massapequa Park is one of the safest villages on all of Long Island. Really?!!! Our beautiful preserve where the senior center and

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

Resolve To Read More And Reap The Beneﬁts It may be tempting to curl up on the couch and turn on the television to unwind, but research indicates that reading is one of the best workouts for the brain. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood ﬂowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive

and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices. 1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package. Senior Earns Service Award For Animal Rights Activism

A devoted animal rights activist, Massapequa High School senior Daniel Balsamo was recently presented with the 2020 President’s Volunteer Service Award for his dedication to the cause. The award is a state-level honor through the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteers significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and country. Daniel, who regularly attends animal rights events

and rallies in New York City, recently started his non-profit organization, Liberation NYC. His organization is preparing for its inaugural conference in April, which is expected to draw 300 to 400 people and will include guest speakers and educational workshops. He said that goal is to educate people about animal rights. Animal rights has been an important issue for Daniel for several years, and he is particularly concerned about the treatment of animals within in the agricultural
