College Commitments Fifteen student-athletes at Massapequa High School will go on to play for college teams, and they were recognized at a national letter of intent signing ceremony on February 7th. The students will take their talents to schools on Long Island, upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New England and as far away as Minnesota. Five members of the girls soccer team signed their college commitments including Haylee Poltorak

Society set up the display, and an opening reception was held for the artists, their teachers, families and community members on the evening of Feb. 8. “It’s a great way for the community to see all of the artwork that everyone has worked really hard to create,” said senior and National Art Honor Society President Elizabeth Schafer. Senior Gabby Doughty said this exhibit gives recognition to Massapequa’s art community and showcases the abilities of the district’s young artists. Alex Valentine added that with pieces from elementary school through high school on display, it shows the progression of skills that students learn. The display will remain through Sunday, February 25th, in a storefront on the south end of the first floor. The Westfield Sunrise Mall was once again host to the Salvation Army Red Kettle at the Westfield Sunrise Mall this past December. “For nearly 25 years, the Westfield Sunrise Mall has welcomed the Salvation Army Red Kettle into the mall,” stated Bill Moseley, Salvation Army Advisory Board Member. He noted that he has been singing and playing holiday tunes on guitar at the Red Kettle since the early 90’s, where music increases donations, as well as providing a great
holiday venue and making folks feel good. “I was very much appreciative of my old alma matter at Seaford High School and to Key Club Advisor Keri Degnan for providing bell ringers for December,” said Mr. Moseley, noting that over $800 was raised at the mall in December. Arcade Imagination Inspired by a young boy who made arcade games out of cardboard boxes, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District did just the same. Third-graders took part in the STEAM activity and the result was a room full of creative games. The students learned about Caine’s Arcade from a YouTube video before using recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, plates, cups and paper to make their own. To

Elementary and middle school students from the Massapequa School District recently came together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Berner Middle School students who are taking Mandarin Chinese as their world language traveled to Birch Lane Elementary
School on February 9th. They joined the secondgraders who came together in the cafeteria to learn about the holiday and make a craft. Mandarin Chinese teacher Tiffany Fan talked to students about Chinese New Year traditions and customs. She spoke about
the Year of the Dog and showed the children how to write “Dog Year” in Mandarin. Second-graders then replicated it with assistance from their Berner peers. The older and younger students also worked together to create paper origami dogs.

Thanking the Troops Elementary students throughout the Massapequa School District showed their appreciation for the men and women in the armed services by taking part in the Valentines for Veterans program. All six elementary schools participated, and the cards were sent to either the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County or
New York State Assembly for delivery to the troops. Children shared their gratitude through colorful cards with personal messages and well wishes. Of the thousands of cards completed, some were shaped liked hearts while others had patriotic themes. Lockhart Elementary School Principal Stephen Scarallo said it is important
to show that the country’s servicemen and women are not forgotten. Birch Lane Elementary School first-grade teacher Gina Berland added that it had the dual purpose of teaching children to give thanks while allowing them to practice their literacy and handwriting skills.

Statewide Honor Amy Curry, a sixth-grade teacher at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Social Studies Elementary Classroom Teacher Award by the New York State Council for the Social Studies. Ms. Curry, the daughter of a former Massapequa teacher, has worked in the district for two decades and presently teaches English language arts and social studies. Prior to coming to Berner for the 2017-18 school year, she taught several grades at Unqua Elementary School, including sixth grade for the past 15 years. “It is always an honor to be recognized for the work you do,” she said. “So many people in Massapequa

School District, during my 20 years of teaching, have helped and influenced my teaching in their own special ways. I work with a diverse group of talented, creative and hardworking individuals.” She was nominated by Brian Dowd, a retired Massapequa and former curriculum associate for social studies. The statewide recognition acknowledges Ms. Curry’s strong grasp of the sixthgrade social studies curriculum, which focuses on ancient civilizations. She said that the topic lends itself to fun and engaging lessons and she takes pride in allowing students to learn through hands-on activities. During the study of India, she incorporates meditation
and yoga. As a teacher, Ms. Curry said her favorite moment is “the look you see on a child’s face when you know you have captured their attention and you see a student invested, captivated and eager to learn more.” She received the Margaret Simon Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 2015. Ms. Curry was also contributing author to the book “Growing a Growth Mindset” by Kevin Sheehan and Jessica Ryan. Ms. Curry will receive the award at the NYSCSS luncheon on March 8th in Albany.
Scallop Bowl Massapequa High School’s Marine Science Club took third place at the 18th annual New York State Scallop Bowl at Stony Brook University on February 3rd. It was the team’s first podium finish. The event was part of the larger National Ocean Science Bowl, which is designed to raise awareness about the oceans and coastal resources. Massapequa’s team was led by captain and senior Hunter D’Amore, joined by seniors Connor Stearns and Kevin
Malone, and sophomore Michael Liebow. Hunter is currently an oceanography intern and plans to major in marine biology at the University of New Haven in the fall. A dozen teams took part in the New York competition. The first round featured four players per school who could buzz in to answer various questions. If a “toss up” question was answered correctly, that team received a bonus question in which all members could work together to answer. A
halftime team challenge question was extended and written. Massapequa remained in the round robin action until beaten by eventual champion Mt. Sinai High School. The third-place finish earned Massapequa a trophy and tickets to the Long Island aquarium with back stage passes. Adviser Gregory Kwas commended the four players for their hard work and preparation leading up to the competition.

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by diving into the chilly waters of Tobay Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.” Each year, Special Olympics New York Polar Plunges are held throughout the state to attract thousands of chilled souls to engage in a fun and commendable fundraising event. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Town Councilman Louis Imbroto, who also took the plunge at last year’s event, stated, “Special Olympics New York changes lives
through the joy of sports and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with this outstanding organization to help make this event a success.” The Polar Plunge helps Special Olympics New York provide year-round sports training and competition in over 22 Olympic-style sports for more than 71,889 children and adults with intellectual

Jaime McGrade, Community Fundraising/ Events Manager for the America’s VetDogs, was contacted and informed of the decision to sponsor a service dog. Arrangements were made for VFW Post 7763 Commander William Colfer, Poppy Chairman Richard Magee and Quartermaster Arthur Krumm to present a check for $6,000 for sponsorship of a puppy to Ms. McGrade at America’s VetDogs facility in Smithtown on January 22nd. And so the journey begins for a puppy to one day help a veteran live without boundaries. Since 2003, America’s VetDogs (VetDogs.org) has trained and placed guide and service dogs

The Sergeant Peter F. Colleran, Jr. Post 7763 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Massapequa Park conducts its annual Poppy Drive during the month of May each year. The money raised through the generosity of the residents, businesses and individuals who donated this past May has enabled Post 7763 to continue providing assistance to veterans in need. The idea of sponsoring a service dog to assist a veteran in need was considered. America’s VetDogs organization, located in Smithtown, was contacted and provided a speaker to inform the Post officers and members about sponsorship opportunities for their service dog program. The speaker, Cliff Miller, informed the members in November that, “All of the Americas’ VetDogs begin their journey as puppies before starting their training as service dogs. Sponsorship helps to defray the expenses of the

He has exhibited in NYC Galleries, and various galleries and museums on Long Island, including the Heckscher Museum and the Long Island Museum of American Art. His work can be found in public and private collections. Bruce also teaches Studio Art at Stony Brook University.
