thumbs up for Massapequa Library, on the corner which did a great job clearing away the snow from the sidewalk. A big thumbs down and jeers goes to Autovanta, Jersey Mikes and Dairy Queen on Sunrise highway. Town of Oyster Bay councilwoman Laura Maier and resident of Massapequa owns the two franchises that are on Sunrise Highway, Jersey Mikes and DQ. The sidewalk is completely impassable forcing people onto Sunrise Highway. The Mayor was going to “ look into this” which of course never happened. I called TOB on Wednesday looking for Maier who wasn’t available but to her credit she did return my phone call within the hour. I discussed how dangerous the situation was for walkers coming from the train station. She stated that even though she owned the franchises it was “really the landlord’s responsibility to clear the snow “ and admits she hadn’t been by because of recent surgery but was aware of it. She assured me she would have it addressed. Unfortunately it remains under snow and the parking lot is an ice skating rink with dangerous icicles dangling waiting to piece someone’s skull. It appears if you work for the Town of Oyster Bay like Maier and our Mayor does all talk and no action is the norm. But don’t worry your tax dollars will pay their no show job and health benefits. Another big thumbs down for the Mayor who campaigned on “improved pedestrian safety” We can add this to another broken promise, repeal free healthcare for politicians, enhance ethics, and repave roads, all lies. The pedestrian triangle walkway on Merrick road which houses the sign displaying the village trustees sign was visible but the walkway was buried under snow. Ironic given that Wiss and Schiaffino, trustees who are both running with Pearl in March live in Bar Harbor and have to pass that sign when they drive by it. Meantime the safety of the high school students and village residents is compromised as they are forced into a busy and dangerous Merrick road because the village didn’t bother to clear the sidewalk. I guess if the sign was buried it would be cleared out. WAKE UP MASSAPEQUA PARK!!! Is this the leadership you want? On February 7 Massapequa Park was hit by a fast moving storm that left a beautiful but snowy mess. This was on top of four day storm earlier in the week. But kudos to intrepid villagers of Massapequa Park who complied with the village ordinance of “ removing the snow from the sidewalk 24 hours after it stopped snowing.” Out came the snow blowers and shovels. Unfortunately that message was clearly lost not only on the village of Massapequa Park but on several of the businesses that are in our village, mainly on sunrise highway. Although the roads were cleared of snow, cheers for those working on super bowl Sunday but jeers for those drivers that came back and dumped snow on already plowed driveways and handicapped walkways and plowed in fire hydrants. On the Monday evening meeting at the village where it was cold and snow everywhere, ( it really should have been zoomed) I carefully made my way across the pot holed road with my cane and across the handicapped ramp to the village hall entrance filled with ice. The Mayor who clearly lacks an awareness of his environment was praising how great the snow removal was, however residents in the audience had a different view point which was also echoed on social media. Those children who do attend school had difficulty walking because the sidewalks were buried under snow by the plows. My corner which has two school bus stops had been cleared only to have the plows blow past so quickly sparks were flying and snow covered an already clear sidewalk and driveway. Worst of all a smaller truck from the village came and completely covered the exposed handicapped ramp with a solid two foot pack of snow and ice. The village hall sidewalk on the residential side by the snow equipment was never cleared so those pedestrians trying to get to the train station were forced to walk in the street. The village didn’t get around to cleaning that until late Wednesday afternoon after I brought it to their attention. I told the mayor how unsafe it is on sunrise highway because several of the businesses refuse to clear their sidewalks so walkers are now forced out on to sunrise highway and can easily be road kill when dusk falls. He was going to” look into it” which of course means nothing will happen. Cheers to Park Animal Hospital, Dunkin donuts and Douglas Elliman real estate all corner businesses on sunrise highway who did a great job clearing both the front entrance and sides keeping it safe for pedestrians and the same goes for the businesses on Merrick Road. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

cancer treatment. Clients meet with trained exercise physiologists for one-onone personal training sessions to address their specific physical goals and issues. Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently joined with William “Bill” Kaltsas, resident of Massapequa and WWII veteran, in celebrating his 100th birthday at The Bristal at Massapequa. Bill is a WWII veteran after being drafted into service in the early days of the war, and his service included tours to places like

New Guinea and the Pacific theater. After returning home from the service, Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit took hold and he opened a successful chain of nightclubs and restaurants, and married his beautiful wife Helen and raised three children. Bill currently resides at The Bristal in Massapequa, after moving

back to New York from Ft. Myers, Florida, following the passing of his wife Helen. Councilman Hand joined with the staff and other residents at The Bristal, and Bill’s daughter Sandy (right) to wish Bill a very happy birthday, thank him for his service, and that he continues to enjoy life and all of God’s blessings.

Seniors Earn Physical Education Leadership Award Massapequa High School seniors John Reece and Alexandra Stasichin were recognized as this year’s recipients of the Nassau

Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and

Dance. Two students – one male and one female – were selected from every high school who best exemplify

their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education. John and Alexandra were chosen for the award by Massapequa High School’s physical education teachers because they exhibit physically active lifestyles, value healthy choices, demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, show leadership, are positive influences on their peers and value lifelong learning.

In addition to being active participants in their health and physical education classes, they also suit up as Massapequa Chiefs. John is on the baseball, basketball and volleyball teams. He and his volleyball teammates earned a Nassau County title in the fall 2019 season. Alexandra has earned AllCounty, All-Conference, All-Long Island and AllState honors as a member of the cross country, winter track and spring track teams. Alexandra said she loves

to help others, and in her physical education classes she makes connections with all of her classmates and ensures that everyone feels included. She added that it is an honor to be recognized for her leadership. Since elementary school, John has been inspired by his physical education teachers to live a fit and healthy lifestyle. He said he has followed their example in striving to be a leader in class and a good role model for his peers.

We were very lucky last winter with the snow-free weather that we had, but I guess that Mother Nature has other ideas for this year. The good news is that we are only forty days away from spring and longer days. I, for one, cannot wait.

The February Board Meeting went very well. We are excited to announce our new CPA firm, Suzanne M. LoBiondo, CPA P.C. Suzanne is a good friend of mine and also my high school classmate. They are already at work and we look forward to a great relationship with them. Reminder to all that if you have yet to pay your membership dues, please do so as soon as possible, as we are watching all expenses due to the pandemic. All revenue that comes in helps to keep our budget balanced. If you have a problem, call me at (516) 633 -1435, and we can discuss your options. We are currently looking into filing for the next round of PPP monies from the Phase 2 rollout by the federal government, and we hope for positive outcomes on that as well. Our Super Raffle drawing was held, and the big winner was Chamber member Karen Cass. She and all of the other winners were drawn at the January General Meeting, and then announced to all by e-mail. Best wishes to all who won, and kudos to Past President Patty Orzano for doing a great job organizing this raffle. Patty is very dedicated to the Chamber, and I thank her for her commitment to all that she does.

The rest of my message is dedicated to some of our Board Members who are very devoted to our Chamber. Our Third Vice President is Robin Hepworth who is the owner of Robin Joy Photography and also an assistant at the Massapequa School District. Robin is a true professional, and her photo work is very good and always looks first class. She also works on setting up the General Meetings. Robin and Karen Gawrych always do a great job scheduling our luncheons. Our Recording Secretary is Linda Rowse, and she takes all of our minutes for the Board Meetings. The minutes always look great, and she does a wonderful job. Linda is the Branch Manager for The First National Bank of Long Island on Broadway. The bank has a stellar reputation and the facility on Broadway enhances our community very much. Our Acting Treasurer is Past President Gary Slavin, and he recently stepped up to take this position after it opened up. Gary has served on all facets of the Chamber, and is currently working on the PPP Program. He is a great asset to me as the President with his wise counsel and input. Gary has been a long-time Investment and Security Advisor, and he has a stellar reputation for doing fine work with all of his clients. That is all for this month. Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, March 15th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this March at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have dwindled during this COVID-19 health

pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive on March 15th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low

fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our

local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For additional information regarding the Town’s Blood Drive, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6380.
