Massapequa High School senior Kelly Mullooly returned to her roots for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, leading a composting project for third graders at Birch Lane Elementary School. During a pair of presentations in January, Kelly taught students about the positive effects of waste reduction on the environment, then helped them start their own compost bins. Kelly’s days in the scouts started when she was a kindergartner at Birch Lane. In fifth grade, her troop did a “No Trash Tuesdays” project for their Bronze Award which encouraged the use of

reusable containers for lunch every Tuesday. By tracking the number of trash bags used during lunch every day, they determined it to be a success. “It was great to see that our efforts had truly made a difference,” Kelly said, “and I wanted to continue working on projects that had a similar goal of helping the environment.” For the Gold Award, which is the top honor in Girl Scouts, Kelly connected with Birch Lane Principal Stephen Aspetti and Magnet/STEAM teacher Kelsey Downey. Ms. Downey, a lifetime Girl Scout herself, became

Kelly’s mentor for the project. The “Kid Komposting” project began with an informative session on Jan. 16, in which she taught third graders about composting – what it is, what can and cannot be composted and how it helps the environment. Kelly returned on Jan. 25 and showed students how to make a composting bin. They were asked to bring in food scraps and an empty container from home, while Kelly provided soil. She guided the youngsters through the process. When they were done, students received completion certificates.

“I hope the lesson, along with that information, encourages a lot of families to give it a try and start their own compost pile at home,” Kelly said. Ms. Downey welcomed the opportunity to help a fellow Girl Scout with her community service project. She said that from the beginning, Kelly’s passion for composting and the environment were evident. “She understands that the earlier we begin to recognize and have a hands-on role in protecting our environment, the more likely we are to adopt these practices into our everyday lives,” Ms. Downey said.

“Kelly hopes that teaching the third graders about composting now is just a small step towards them becoming passionate about conservation and protecting our environment.” Ms. Downey added that she was proud to see Kelly’s planning and hard work come together. The third graders were engaged and excited throughout the project, particularly as they created their own compost bins to take home. Kelly, who belongs to Troop 2524, had to complete 80 hours of service related to her Gold Award project. That included writing her

Massapequa Girl Scout Brings Environmental Awareness To Birch Lane proposal, designing the presentations and working with the third graders. She is grateful to Ms. Downey for her expertise as a teacher, which allowed Kelly to plan and implement a lesson relatable to third graders. In addition to her work with the Girl Scouts, Kelly is a varsity cheerleader for Massapequa High School and member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, the Chordettes vocal group and the National, Spanish and Tri-M Music honor societies. and put a thermometer in each. In one of the bottles, they added an Alka Seltzer table to create carbon dioxide, and compared the temperatures. Fiona and Kayla submitted a video of their experiment. The judges selected them to attend the IACS Challenge finals at Stony Brook University on Feb. 8. “It’s really exciting,” Fiona said. “We worked hard and we really like science.” Added Kayla, “It means a lot because there were so many kids who participated.” As sixth graders, they tied for first place at the middle school level in Massapequa’s annual Science Discovery Fair. Kayla’s project was about the effects of saltwater and seaweed on the growth of tadpoles, and Fiona wanted to find out if the heart rate of horses decreases when being groomed. Kayla was inspired to

apply for the IACS Challenge by her father, a science teacher in Lynbrook, and asked her friend and fellow science aficionado Fiona to join her. Both students have enjoyed science since elementary school, as Kayla attended Unqua and Fiona went to Birch Lane. The Science Discovery Fair has been a tradition for Kayla for several years, while Fiona took part in it for first time last year. They are already planning their experiments for this year’s district competition, which will be held in March. Additionally, they have been accepted into Berner’s science research class for eighth grade. Kayla and Fiona both added that their love of science has been enhanced by their middle school science teachers, who bring the subject to life with interesting and engaging experiments. This year, Kayla’s teacher is Rena Harbeck and Fiona has Pamela Forman.

A shared love of science prompted Fiona Ash and Kayla Vessalico, seventh graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, to team up and enter the IACS Challenge in honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Not only did they submit a project, Fiona and Kayla advanced to the finals. The competition, hosted by Stony Brook University’s Institute for Advanced Computational Science, required them to choose a female scientist or engineer whose work inspired them. Fiona and Kayla selected Eunice Newton Foote, a 19th century scientist who discovered the greenhouse effect. They were required to create an experiment related to their scientist, so Fiona and Kayla explored the effects of carbon dioxide on temperature. The students filled two soda bottles with water

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town is partnering with United Way of Long Island to launch YouthBuild, a program designed to help young adults between the ages 16 and 24 learn vocational skills that will lead to meaningful employment and success. YouthBuild participants split their time between the vocational training work site and the classroom, where they can earn their high school diploma or equivalency degree, and prepare for postsecondary training opportunities including college, apprenticeships, and employment. “I’m very proud to

announce that the Town of Oyster Bay will be partnering with United Way of Long Island to provide this extraordinary opportunity for young individuals, who may have faced previous barriers to success, to attain an education that will lead to gainful employment within our communities,” said Supervisor Saladino. “YouthBuild not only offers vocational programs for in demand industries such as construction, health care, information technology, and hospitality, but it also includes community service and civic engagement so students may share their valuable

perspectives with elected officials and community leaders.” YouthBuild is now accepting applications for the Class of 2024. Classes will begin on March 3, 2024.
