Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D-Lawrence) is partnering with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to host free virtual community tax grievance workshops on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 2 p.m. and Thursday, February 24, 2022, 7 p.m. to inform residents about how to challenge their property

Reading For Joy And Spreading Joy Reading and kindness are emphasized daily at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, so the two were combined for the 2022 Pick A Reading Partner program that kicked off on Jan. 21. This year’s theme is “Spread Reading With Acts of Kindness!” The three-week program began with a virtual assembly by performer Jared

Campbell, whose uplifting songs emphasized the importance of doing well in school and showing good character. During PARP, which is presented in partnership with the PTA, children are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes per day with a family member or friend. There are also daily and weekly challenges, and special gifts and surprises. Through Feb. 11,

students can participate in a variety of reading and kindness challenges. Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host a free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2023-2024 property tax assessments. The workshop will be held in-person on Tuesday, February 15th, at 10am at Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of

your property, I invite you to attend this Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of March 1 is approaching.” In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative assessed value for the 2023/2024 school tax period and the 2024 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty. com or contact their County Legislator. At the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” online or via mail. Minority Leader Abrahams To County Executive Blakeman: Give Residents More Time To Grieve Their Taxes Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D Freeport) urged Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman to immediately extend the deadline for residents to file assessment challenges with Nassau County’s Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to Monday, May 2. In a Monday, Jan. 31 letter to County Executive Blakeman, Minority Leader Abrahams wrote that the

extension is necessary due to the “myriad of economic challenges that have been caused by COVID-19 and the ongoing disruption to the housing market because of the pandemic.” “It is therefore our shared belief that an extension to the filing deadline, similar to the extensions provided in previous years and even predating the pandemic, is necessary to ensure that residents have a full opportunity

to robustly exercise their rights as Nassau County property owners,” Minority Leader Abrahams wrote. “Residents should be immediately notified of the extended deadline as part of the ‘Notice of Tentative Assessed Value’ which must be issued to property owners this week.” The current deadline for residents to file assessment challenges is Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, now celebrating 50 years in operation, is starting off the new year with a new Planned Giving Program. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Hearts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid-19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-in-your-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a natural progression, but the National Valentine Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes. Various heartshaped vessels, including

Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact

with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture
