Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.
All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each team will create and execute a community service project. How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

MTAC OFFERS FREE TIPS TRAINING - FREE Alcohol Awareness Training is being offered by MTAC for employees and managers working at bars, restaurants and retail stores that sell and serve alcohol in the Massapequas. To participate in the program, registration is required with Massapequa Takes Action Coalition at 516-7993203 x131 or info@mtacoalition.com. Massapequa Chamber of Commerce and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition invite Massapequa businesses and their employees that serve or sell alcohol to attend FREE TIPS training, a skills based course designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving, and underage drinking. This free training is offered in conjunction with the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County Police Department, and YES Community Counseling Center. TIPS, Training Intervention ProcedureS,
is an alcohol training awareness program approved by the New York State Liquor Authority. The training can benefit businesses as it enhances the fundamental “people skills” of servers and sellers of alcohol by providing the knowledge and confidence to recognize fake identification, potential alcohol–related problems and effectively intervene to prevent alcohol-related tragedies. TIPS is offered FREE to Massapequas’ offpremise (liquor, grocery, convenience, retail, etc.) on Monday, February 10th

The annual event, sponsored by National Geographic, started with 21 sixth, seventh and eighth graders who were top scorers on written geography bees taken in their social studies classes. The championship round featured eighth graders Ken Zheng and Kailey Burns. Ken emerged as the winner and will take a qualifying test for a chance
to represent the district at the state geography bee in Albany. Sixth grader Brennan Kilkenny finished in third place. Questions tested participants on both United States and world geography. Rounds had different formats including individual questions for students, as well as common questions supported with photo and map handouts. National Geographic’s GeoBee, which was developed in 1989, is designed to inspire and reward students for their curiosity about the world. Questions not only cover
