HOW LOCAL RESIDENTS ARE LOSING THEIR FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT By Dr. Cynthia Paulis The Pandemic has devastated our world in terms of how we live, how we interact with one another and has destroyed a thriving economy with shut downs and bureaucratic rules and laws that often times make no sense. The pandemic has also become a convenient excuse for keeping the public from participating in a democratic process and keeping information away from us. This has become very evident in our county, Town of Oyster Bay, and the village of Massapequa Park. Meetings are held in secret, the public and the press is not allowed in to attend. Their excuse is Covid but in the age of zoom there is no excuse for this.

FACT When I brought up the fact to Pearl that several of these board members were frequently absent from board meetings and yet they are qualifying for life time health benefits along with their families Pearl refuted my claims with “ that is not a true statement “Massapequa Post “Jan 20,2021 front page. He lied knowing that he himself had one of worst attendance records as a trustee. FACT A foil and letter was sent to Pearl, the village attorney and all the trustees with the following questions 1) Why was there no public hearing held on the lifetime healthcare issue?

This “new administration” promised to get rid of health care for life, promised transparency and none of that has happened. In fact, just the opposite has occurred. There have been closed door secret meetings, failure to have public hearings on important issues that directly affect the village taxes, and refusal to answer questions not only in public meetings but then when they are confronted with the truth with hard evidence, dismiss it. Freedom of Information forms have either been rejected or completely ignored. In essence they are giving you the middle finger and laughing all the way and these are the people you voted into office. WAKE UP MASSAPEQUA PARK. YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE AT STAKE.

2) There are twelve past and present trustees receiving lifetime health care benefits costing the village taxpayers $210,115 annually. Trustee Tina Schiaffino is on a family plan costing us $30,827.29. Will these past members now be required to pay for their health care?

The same problems that are affecting us here in the village are simultaneously occurring in the Town of Oyster Bay where the supervisor is refusing to allow the public and press into their meetings and there is no participation from the public allowed. Outraged residents are now taking matters into their own hands and starting their own zoom calls. I just listened to one zoom call (1/26/21) set up by Kevin McKenna founder of Town of Oyster Bay News who is also running in November for TOB supervisor.

5) What parameters are put in place for trustees who fail to show up for the meetings?

It’s not surprising that the same playbook used in TOB has now happened in our own village. Three of our board members are directly connected to the Town of Oyster Bay. Mayor Danny Pearl works full time for the TOB as deputy commissioner of sanitation, Trustee Dana Durso and running mate of Pearl is married to Michael Durso who works as a sanitation worker for Danny Pearl and is now our our NYS assemblyman. His father is John Durso president Long Island Federation of Labor AFL-CIO. Trustee Christine Wiss was appointed by Pearl October 19,2020 works full time for the TOB as a deputy comptroller for the past 7 years. She is the wife of attorney and former Massapequa Park trustee Scott Wiss who plead guilty to insurance fraud when he was arrested Dec 2001. His charge for his involvement in a multimillion dollar insurance fraud ring was reduced from a felony charge where he faced 7 years in jail to a misdemeanor and his law licenses were pulled for several months. At the time he was the chairman of the Massapequa Park Board of Appeals and was asked to step down by then Mayor Altadonna. WAKE UP MASSAPEQUA PARK. LOOK WHO IS ON YOUR BOARD CONTROLLING YOUR TAX DOLLARS.

3) Why are family members included in the health care costs? We did not elect them to office. 4) Why is health care continued with a percentage of the cost charged to the village taxpayers after these people are no longer serving in office? NO RESPONSE WAS EVER RECEIVED FACT IN 2013 when 13 trustees past and present received health care it cost $154,903. In seven years that cost ballooned $55,212 for 12 trustees full and part time to $210,115. This is only going to increase . FACT When I attended January 25 meeting and once again attempted to get my questions answered Pearl waved it off and stated they were answered when they never were. I presented a detailed chart of dates and meetings missed by the trustees. Pearl discounted it saying that “ This is a 24/7 job so its ok if I missed a few meetings.” Really? They get paid to attend the meetings and have full time jobs at the TOB. We as citizens are losing our rights and our voice. These part time elected officials who are too lazy to show up for meetings, refuse to answer your questions and are draining your tax dollars for their full time benefits and letting the village deteriorate. Elected officials who are paid with our tax dollars and receive health benefits are shutting you out of the democratic process and refusing to answer questions. In our village some trustees receive life time health care benefits for an entire family if they served on the board for ten years. Life time benefits for a part job of which many never showed up for work on multiple occasions. What a scam. I discovered that last year when I ran for Mayor. I asked detailed questions filed Freedom of Information forms spent a lot of time reading 20 years of minutes of the village hall meetings. In a time consuming process I discovered information that none of us knew about except those trustees who sat on the board and reaped the benefits. They were complicit in their silence.

FACT Since the new group took over in September 2020 there have been SEVEN closed door sessions. There were NO PUBLIC HEARINGS involving the health care for life issue costing the taxpayers $210,115 ANNUALLY for twelve PART TIME elected trustees past and present. They didn’t get rid of this instead they added on to it with a surprise 11th hour walk on resolution never posted on the agenda presented to four people sitting in the audience on December 28,2020 at the village meeting. Going forward new trustees will only pay a small portion of the health care costs and the taxpayers are on the hook for 90 percent of the cost including the family who you didn’t elect. This will continue to add to your taxes.

The Great Monster Debate “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley sparked so much interest among seniors at Massapequa High School that they took their study of the novel to the next level. Students in the two Monsters and Graphic Novels classes put Frankenstein’s monster on trial, using facts from the book as the basis for a mock court case. Students began reading the book in late October and continued until the holiday break, regularly discussing it in class. Teachers Billy Ryan and Ellen Bashan said the idea

to create a fictional court case out of “Frankenstein” came from the students. The trials were held during the first week in January and they didn’t even have to look very far for the perfect setting. A nearby room that houses Massapequa High School’s law classes and mock trial team is already setup like a courtroom. Mr. Ryan played the judge and students portrayed the attorneys and witnesses. Many of the characters in the trial were from the book, but they also added “outside experts” including Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis, and a forensic criminologist. Remote students were also able to participate, and an 11th grade English class joined via videoconference to serve as the jury. The students became fully immersed in their roles. Even though Frankenstein’s monster

confesses to crimes in the book, some members of the jury found him not guilty. Mr. Ryan said that is a testament to how well students understood the book and were able to use details from it to make their case. He said the case came down to two arguments – was Frankenstein’s monster naturally evil or was he shaped by the circumstances. Tina Farrell, curriculum associate for English language arts and library media, said teaching students how to form an argument by citing evidence is a major component of English classes. Each year, American football’s championship game is one of the most-watched television broadcasts across the globe. The Super Bowl might not kick off until early evening in the eastern United States, but the day’s festivities typically begin much earlier than that. Super Bowl parties typically bring people from all walks of life together. Football fans mingle with non-fans who are more anxious to see the famed Super Bowl advertisements than they are the big game, but one thing all Super Bowl viewers can enjoy together is the food. Food is as much a part of Super Bowl Sunday as the game itself. That should be comforting in a year when Super Bowl parties figure to be atypical as the world continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Large gatherings likely aren’t on the docket for Super Bowl LV, and the game itself may be played in a largely empty stadium, but fans at home can still cook up traditional Super Bowl

Sunday foods this year. The focus of Super Bowl Sunday fare is not often about an entrée, but rather the bevy of snacks and starters people can enjoy in small doses throughout the game. That makes the big game a good fit for scaled back celebrating. This recipe for “BeerBraised Meatballs” from “Cooking With Beer” by the editors at Publications International, Ltd. makes 20 meatballs, making it ideal no matter the size of your Super Bowl Sunday party.

1 bottle (12 ounces) light-colored beer, such as a lager 11⁄2 cups tomato sauce 1 cup ketchup 2 tablespoons paste

1⁄2 cup packed brown sugar 1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line broiler pan with foil; spray rack with nonstick cooking spray.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. If you or someone you know can benefit from the LAHH program, please visit the BBCC’s website for more information and to fill out the LAHH Application. The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers. This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Thankfully, BBCC has been able to stay afloat and operating throughout the entire pandemic! The BBCC is currently looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events. If you have some experience with social media (Facebook and Instagram) and are comfortable posting and boosting ads, please let the coalition know. They have several virtual events in the near future and can use some assistance! Join the BBCC for a virtual webinar on February 11th at 6pm, called The Care Behind Your Care. Turf replacement must be considered when loose inlays pose tripping hazards, fibers split and shred, and when inlays are worn out. When fields experience these issues, less cushion between the athlete and stone base underneath the turf. As players fall on the field, they are at a higher risk of injury and even concussion.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand recently announced that the Town has added a public skating session at its outdoor ice skating rink at Marjorie Post Community Park in Massapequa. Throughout the month of February, this facility will offer a 4

Pravato stated, “With the tremendous financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to have a negative effect on residents throughout the state, it was unconscionable to demand on-time payments from homeowners when Nassau County couldn’t provide timely nor accurate information. While Nassau County continues to struggle with its broken Assessment Department, my office stands ready to serve residents with timely, accurate and quality services. It is for all these reasons that I requested and Governor Cuomo granted a deadline extension for payment of the first half of General taxes until March 12th, without imposition of a penalty.” Throughout the pandemic, Receiver Pravato’s Office has aggressively advocated for leeway and leniency

for our hard hit residents when it comes to paying taxes. Prior to the collection of both general and school taxes in 2020, Receiver Pravato and Supervisor Saladino successfully lobbied New York State for an extension to the collection dates, without the imposition of a penalty. When taxes are due, Receiver Pravato has encouraged residents to make their payments on line, where Receiver Pravato arranged for taxpayers to remit payment via eCheck at a reduced fee. Residents can alternatively pay via credit card online, where a third-party vendor charges a processing fee, or mail their payments to the Receiver’s Office. Safe Ways To Celebrate The Super Bowl The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year. In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different. The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game. Fans are expected to wear masks and will sit in pods separated by six feet. That capacity

restriction would place around 13,000 fans in the stadium. Super Bowl I, which took place in 1967, was the only Super Bowl in history not to sell out, and that drew a crowd of 61,946 fans. While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game. • Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases. • Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their

favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic. • Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters. • Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes. Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection. The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.
