Fairfield Students Give Gratitude To Local Law Enforcement The Students Against School in the Massapequa club is to emphasize safe to show gratitude to those Destructive Decisions club School District is all about decisions and students in the community who at Fairfield Elementary safety. Family & Children’s Association www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA has served Long Islanders since 1884 and today its more than 40 programs fall into five big areas of need: Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery Taking on addiction from every angle, beginning with prevention. Recovery support services are offered Islandwide with offices from Hempstead to Westhampton Beach. Children’s Mental Health & Wellness This division offers an array of services and supports designed to promote the health and wellness of children and their families. The services are for individuals up to 21 years of age who have or are at risk of developing a mental health diagnosis. Services are always free to clients, voluntary, family-driven, strength-based, and culturally competent, with location and scheduling tailored to each family’s needs. They also provide support for the families of individuals with mental and/ or behavioral health issues. Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafﬁcked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Town To Host First Ever Chinese New Year Celebration At Town Hall To ring in the Chinese New Year of the Tiger, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board invite residents to attend the Town’s first ever Chinese New Year Celebration at Town Hall. Held in partnership with the South Asian Advisory Board and numerous ChineseAmerican Community Groups, the event will feature traditional Chinese decorations, cuisines, and cultural rituals, in addition to a presentation from leaders of the ChineseAmerican Community. “The Chinese New Year

is the oldest and most important festival in China, as it is a time of unifying celebration for millions of Chinese people and recognizes the Chinese culture’s wonderful diversity, splendor, and richness on the world stage,” said Supervisor Saladino. “It is my honor to bring this amazing holiday to Town Hall for the first time in our Town’s history. I hope you will join me at this event, along with numerous organizations dedicated to preserving Chinese Heritage in our community, to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.”

our commitment to the environment, this new Farm to Fairway initiative provides dual benefits as Kelp significantly reduces nitrogen in our waterways helping to improve water quality, and decreases our dependency on chemical fertilizers on land. As strange as it may seem, kelp is proven to be incredibly successful as a natural fertilizer as it is 100% organic, dense in nutrients, and does not net an increase in nitrogen through storm water runoff pollution. A pair of Massapequa High School seniors were recently recognized for their leadership in physical education. Anthony Matturro and Alyssa Papasodero were the 2022 recipients of the Nassau Zone Outstanding Student Award, presented by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Two students, one male and one female, are selected each year from every high school who best exemplify their understanding of the New York State learning standards for health and physical education. Anthony and Alyssa were chosen for the award by

teachers in Massapequa High School’s physical education department for exhibiting physically active lifestyles, valuing healthy choices, demonstrating responsible personal and social behavior including good character, citizenship and sportsmanship, showing leadership, and being positive influences on their peers. Anthony and Alyssa are active participants health and physical education classes. “I just do the best I can, try as hard as I can and lead by example,” Anthony said, adding that he credits his determination and success to his wonderful physical education teachers from

elementary school to high school. Alyssa said that she enjoys all of the activities in physical education classes and likes the variety of sports she gets to play with her classmates. She is grateful that her teachers selected her for the award out of hundreds of students. “I think it’s a great accomplishment,” Alyssa said, “and I’m very thankful that the physical education teachers saw something in me.” The pair also play sports for Massapequa, with Alyssa a member of school and community ice hockey teams and Anthony a football and baseball player.

Town Recognizes Massapequa High School Senior for Rare Perfect Score

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and his colleagues on the Town Board recognized Massapequa High School Senior Sarah Popeck for her incredible accomplishment of receiving a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Research exam. Sarah is one of only 375 students

worldwide to earn the top mark. “It is so special to know that one of the very few students to earn a perfect score was raised and taught in our Town,” said Councilwoman Laura Maier. “Sarah’s hard work and dedication is remarkable and we wish her continued success.”

Sarah’s impressive achievements also extend beyond the classroom. She serves as the Northeast regional technologist for a non-profit organization aimed at gun violence prevention, citing engaging social studies teachers as her inspiration for becoming involved in such a worthy cause.

More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than
