Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with the Rallye Motor Company, Donate Life New York State, and the State Automobile Dealers Association to help raise awareness about the life-changing impact of organ, eye and tissue donation. The Supervisor recognized Rallye BMW’s General Manager Matt Carlson, who is receiving a kidney donation from his daughter Stephanie, for

their efforts in spreading the word about how simple it is to sign up to be an organ donor. “Thousands of people die each year due to a lack of available organs for transplants. Everyone can help change this statistic by pledging organ donation through their New York State driver’s license or through other initiatives such as the New York Organ Donor Network,” said Supervisor

Saladino. “Unfortunately, New York is at the bottom of the list as far as the number of people willing to be donors, and we have the opportunity to change that statistic. Working together, we can save the lives of family members, friends and neighbors who are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant and a second chance at life.” In New York State alone, nearly 8,500 people are waiting for lifesaving

organ transplants, while 2,500 New Yorkers receive transplants each year. Sadly, about 500 New Yorkers die waiting for a life-saving transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives and heal 75 more through eye and tissue donation. Anyone age 16 and older can join the registry, regardless of medical history. Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers “For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food…” Matthew 25:35 It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to

provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and,

as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and

fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Town Of Oyster Bay Hosts 2024 Inauguration Ceremony

Master of Ceremonies for the event and Farmingdale Schools Superintendent Paul Defendini welcomed all in attendance. Remarks were also given by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph G. Cairo, Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip and former Congressman Peter King. Officials were also joined by Tweed Roosevelt, the great grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. Special performances were performed by the Farmingdale High School

Vocal Jazz and Daler A Cappella. “Today we embark on a new chapter in the history of our beloved Town. This victory is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the recognition of what we have accomplished in the Town of Oyster Bay,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We did not just win an election, we have won the opportunity to shape the future of our Town, to build on our successes, and to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. As we look to the future, my focus

remains steadfast on the values that make our Town the wonderful community it is today – values of community, safety and a high quality of life for all.” Supervisor Saladino and the Town Board have returned fiscal stability and trust to the Town of Oyster Bay, turning a $44 million deficit into a $88 million surplus, all while cutting taxes. The Supervisor noted that debt is down 25 percent even while the Town has paved 35 percent of roadways, with more to come. The Town has also received 8 credit rating

upgrades, and held the line on Town property taxes for six consecutive years after initially reducing them in 2018, resulting in over $9 million being back in the pockets of homeowners rather than in the coffers of government. “Our Town is made up of wonderful communities – a home for families, a haven for small businesses, and a place where memories are made. It is that reason that this team works day and night to protect our quality of life,” continued Supervisor Saladino. “From improving sports fields to

upgrading parks, repaving roads and working with police to keep you safe, we’re committed to you and your family. “I am also acutely aware of the financial burden that taxes can place on our residents and businesses. That is why we actively seek economic development projects that expand the tax base while benefitting our Town as a whole. We are a financially stable Town, and are better equipped than ever before to meet the needs of residents and address the challenges that may arise.”

Pickleball’s Popularity Reaches Lockhart The pickleball craze has come to Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are enjoying the fast-growing sport in physical education classes, learning

the rules and engaging in competition. Physical education teachers Joe Catalanotto and Sandra Vacirca said that the pickleball unit is new this year for second through fifth

grade students. They set up six courts in the gym, with four players per court at a time. There are neon yellow pickleballs as well as small and large paddles. The unit began with an

introduction to pickleball rules and etiquette, including how to play with a partner. After learning the fundamentals of the game, students began playing scrimmage matches,

Town Urges State And Federal Governments To Help Restore South Shore Beaches Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues in government to demand that the Federal government require the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a long-term solution to harden the shoreline at TOBAY and better protect the mainland. This week, TOBAY Beach and other south shore beaches suffered significant erosion from a winter storm. Damage includes serious dune erosion, the loss of shoreline, exposure of footings to the beach pavilion and saltwater intrusion to Ocean Parkway. “We know that the Army Corps of Engineers has the expertise to resolve this matter and we implore their

immediate assistance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “A short-term and longterm action plan must be implemented, along with the proper funding to harden our shoreline with additional sand, protect the mainland and continue to provide our residents with the beautiful south shore beaches they expect and deserve.” In recent years, Town officials have worked to help restore the beach before each summer season by scraping sand from the west end of TOBAY to the east, knowing that would be a temporary solution. Last summer, the Town purchased 33,000 tons of sand and crews worked on a daily basis to screen, clean and process sand to ensure residents were able

to enjoy their summer at the beach. As this cannot be the ultimate solution, Town officials have continued their outreach to State and Federal officials to identify solutions to help all south shore beaches facing erosion. “Following these massive storms, not only do we lose a significant amount of our beach, high tides also threaten the structural integrity of our center pavilion, as well as the dunes that protect Ocean Parkway,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We also know that our neighboring beaches are experiencing similar issues, and we implore the Army Corps of Engineers TOBAY PAVILION - Ocean waters hit the base of the to step in immediately and TOBAY pavilion following the last storm event. help save our summers!”

Creative expression is the hallmark of the boo-face project, an annual artistic endeavor for seventh graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students bring together all of the elements and principles of art in one piece, such as color, line, shape, space and value. The abstract pattern drawing and painting takes

several weeks to complete. Each student first creates four thumbnail sketches, then picks one to turn into a larger piece of art. The themes of this year’s faces were wide-ranging, from animals to monsters to holiday characters. Many students bring their own personal hobbies and interests into the art. The boo-face projects are

completed in all Foundations of Art classes, taught by Bethany Bracconier, Alison Clemente, Jason Coppola, Heather Cullinan and Antoinette Kearney. It is a long-standing tradition for Berner’s seventh grade artists, allowing them to express their individuality while also applying their knowledge of multiple artistic techniques.
