I woke up this morning and received a Facebook message from a Russ Buhrmaster “Cynthia Paulis why should anyone believe you?” He posted a mug shot of me from a rural jail back in the early 90s. I laughed when I saw it. Ah yes let the political mudslinging begin. I rarely do Facebook , I didn’t grow up with it and there is a lot of misinformation spread on it. I did however post on Danny Pearl’s Facebook page when he stated the following. “The newly elected village Board kept its pledge to end free health insurance for elected officials and others on the workforce. Last night we voted to require that elected officials contribute to health insurance just like everyone else in the world. Promises made, promises kept!” My post stated the real facts I can no longer access because I have been blocked from posting on his Facebook page. People who sling mud love to hide. They especially don’t love truth with substantiated facts to come out.

When Pearl made all the promises, since he was “a nice guy” everyone believed him. They believed a lot of the misinformation about Spinosa but they never investigated the way I did. That takes a lot of time and energy. Let’s not forget Bernie Madoff the “nice guy” who bilked millions from friends who trusted him with their money. Roslyn school supervisor Frank Tassone “nice guy” stole millions from his district. The Town of Oyster Bay where Pearl works full time has had a notorious history of crime and corruption and is once again being investigated by the district attorney’s office. So when this “nice guy” made a false statement on the healthcare issue on his Facebook page and everyone falls lock step congratulating him I set the record straight. Pearl conducted the six closed door sessions, a resolution voted in secret by the trustees on the health care for life was never put on the agenda, no public hearing was ever conducted .

At the last meeting while I tried to get clarification to the resolution I just got the run around from the Garden City lawyer and the mayor. This resolution was never presented in a public hearing where you the taxpayer could give your opinion. Your voice was silenced. As to why I had a mug shot. When I got out military after serving four years as a Lt Commander and physician I couldn’t afford a house in New York. I found a new home on land in rural Texas that was cheap and taxes low. Then six houses were built and one of the homeowners formed an HOA. I didn’t drink or party with these people. I was too busy working trauma centers at night and sleeping during the day. As a single” Yankee” woman from NY I was targeted. They had my gas and phone turned off. They tampered with my mail and delivered 50 pizzas to my ER as if I had ordered them. This was pre internet and cell phone and security codes. I went to the police and district attorney for help but nothing happened. Then they ratcheted up the harassment feeling secure nothing would happen to them. The police came to my home that a charge had been made against me. No explanation. Since I was caring for my mom with Alzheimer’s they allowed me to “ check in the next day” I got an attorney, showed up the next day, they took my picture, fingerprinted me and then released me 20 minutes later. My attorney and I went to the district attorney’s office, I had proof that I working in an ER 300 miles away supported by witnesses and a plane ticket. The case was immediately dropped. I then turned around and sued the HOA president who spearheaded the harassment. He left town quickly and never showed up in court. It was then I was no longer going to be victimized by bullies. I later became the president of that HOA and uncovered the theft that was taking place in our treasury. In this country people can be falsely accused as we have seen time and again. I didn’t even know this picture was out there so thank you Russ Buhrmaster for putting this on the internet. I am sure you are a “very nice guy” and remember; only cowards run from the truth. I first heard about health care for life for part time elected officials through an anonymous note spread throughout the village last year so I investigated. Truth matters. Through a foil I discovered 12 elected officials some working for TOB and many who have been off the work force for decades were receiving health care for life for a part time position and this included their families as well. It currently is costing our village taxes annually $210.115. After the election I sat in the village hall and read 20 years of minutes of the meetings trying to understand this health care issue and how it got started. I discovered more than I even bargained for, much of the information that Mayor Danny Pearl spread about Deputy Mayor Theresa Spinosa proved to be a gross distortion of the truth and some false statements. Anyone can access these minutes, they are public record. Pearl was appointed to fill a seat after a trustee passed. He entered the scene December 2012. On March 25, 2013 when they voted to raise taxes Pearl and Trustee Schiaffino were both absent. That began the first of 19 missed meetings by Pearl all documented in the minutes over his tenure as trustee. Ironically enough on September 22, 2014 when Mayor Pravato and the trustees met to “establish a standard work day for elected and appointed officials reportable to New York State and Local Employees Retirement System Ref 15250-2014 where was Pearl? ABSENT. Showing up for two meetings a month at night apparently was a hardship for him while he was working full time in sanitation at the TOB collecting a high six figure salary, but he also collected a paycheck from the village while not doing his job.

Then December 28, 2020 they kept the healthcare for life for the past members, his friends who got him into office. Going forward we are still going to be on the hook for lifetime healthcare for 12 past and current part time trustees and their families. We will also now assume the health care cost for future trustees. They are only required to pay 20 percent while we the taxpayers pick up the tab for the remaining 80 percent.

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are

at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

Town Accepting New Applications for 9/11 Walls of Honor Memorial Honors Victims of 9/11 Illness

Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers,

residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and

10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. In the “Mariner’s Compass” seminar, Learn how to select and install a compass on your boat, which features are most important and what will work best for you, how to deal with variation between true and magnetic north, and how to adjust your compass to remove most of the deviation caused by local magnetic influences. is an essential seminar for all boaters. The “Introduction to Navigation” seminar will introduce you to using nautical charts to determine safe routes, creating waypoints in your chart plotter and other GPS devices, and basic electronic navigation and planning. This seminar is a great foundation for advanced courses that teach piloting and celestial navigation skills. Youth Ice Hockey Winter Program Registration Begins Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis Imbroto recently announced that Session 2 of the Town’s 2021 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program will begin on February 6th. This youth hockey program features hockey development, skill programs and a seasonend skills competition over the course of 10 weeks at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. The program is open to girls and boys ages 6-16. “Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is among the best around,

with a dedicated coaching staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.” Registration will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on: • Wednesday, January 20th from 5pm - 8pm (residents only); • Thursday, January 21st from 5pm – 8pm (residents only); • Sunday, January 24th from 8am – 12pm; and • Monday, January 25th from 5pm – 8pm. The advent of the New Year brings with it the promise and relief that we will be able to be vaccinated against this annoying virus, and get on with our lives in whatever normal way that we can. As the expression goes, “Help is on the way!!” Remember that membership dues are now due for 2021, and I ask all to remit as soon as possible to the office if you have not as of yet. Our Christmas Decorations Committee did a great job, and we are now finished with that for another season. We look forward to the upcoming 2021 agenda that we will set with the Board. One of these items is our upcoming scholarship program, chaired by Carol Leff and Karen Gawrych. They do a great job with this. If you know a graduating senior student at Massapequa High School or Plainedge High School, please have them check with their guidance office for details. We are also offering our Member’s Child / Grandchild Scholarship, which is open to any graduating senior who is the child or grandchild of a current Chamber member in good standing. Details for this award will soon be found on our newly designed website - thanks to Loren Wildes and Bar Harbor Web Design for the great work on the website…Loren is a true professional and her work exhibits that at all times. You may also contact our office and Shelley will assist with any scholarship information that you may need.

Our Treasurer, Greg Massimi, had to step down from the Board. My thanks to him for his six months of dedicated service and assistance. Past President Gary Slavin will take over as Acting Treasurer for now. We have announced that the Board seat has opened to all to apply for, so that we can appoint a new Board Member at the February Board Meeting. Résumés are due to Shelley by January 31, 2021 for all applicants. We look forward to our new member joining us in the near future. We have some sad news this month, as Past President Patty Orzano lost her Mother, Anne Palmieri. We give all of our sympathy to Patty and her family, and pray that her mother rests with the Lord. I never met Mrs. Palmieri, but I know how devoted Patty was to her Mom the sign of a great Daughter. May she Rest in Peace.

She is our Scholarship Committee co-Chair, and also assists with setting up our meeting luncheons with Robin Hepworth. Karen’s daughter, Kathryn, is the owner of the Freeport Ninja Academy, where she trains all for ninja sports and competition events, and she is doing very well in that business. Karen also works for the Chamber on our Toy Drive and Food Donation Committees. I value her friendship and input at our meetings, as she is always on the money. My First Vice President, Robert Zabbia, is the owner of The Zabbia Allstate Insurance Agency on Broadway in North Massapequa. He has a very successful agency, and his new office looks great right next door to Pulcinella Restaurant. Robert is the father of two children, and is a great community benefactor, as he donates to many LI charities with his money and time for fundraisers. I am proud to work with him, and look forward to his wise counsel on all of our Chamber matters. He was recently awarded a Man of Distinction award for LI, and kudos to him on that well-deserved honor.

Massapequa SADD Donation Supports Mental Wellness Opportunities for students to participate in community service activities have been reduced because of health and safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, but members of one Massapequa High School club found a way to make a positive difference. The Students Against Destructive Decisions club donated $500 to Mission 34, an organization

based in Charlotte, North Carolina, that is devoted to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness through awareness, education and communication. During Superintendent’s Conference Day on Nov. 3, the district’s health education teachers participated in a virtual workshop with representatives from Mission 34, including the

founder, Heather Bonner, and Jennifer Fights, a clinical psychologist. They shared with teachers different strategies that can be incorporated into the existing mental health curriculum to connect with students as they are living through the COVID-19 pandemic. Massapequa’s health educators now have an increased tool chest to help students become creative problem solvers,

to develop a solutionfocused mindset and to build resiliency skills. SADD adviser Angela Gallucci and co-Presidents Katherine Castoria and Paige Margiotta attended the Dec. 3 Board of Education meeting to announce the donation. They were joined by health education Chairwoman Denise Baldinger, who teaches at the Ames Campus, Berner health

teacher Denise Robertson, high school health teacher Michael LaBella and Ames students Ava Gerrain and Phoebe Elliott. Art teacher Paul Leone made the novelty check for the presentation – the real one will be mailed to Mission 34.
