Recreation Office in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Rd, in Massapequa. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s cognitive development through the nurturing of their artistic expression,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, and I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register beginning Thursday, January 25th.” The Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is 6 weeks in duration, and residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on Wednesdays at 10 am (two year-olds only) or 11 a.m. (three and four year-olds) from February 21st through March 28th.

Classes will also take place on Thursdays at 10 am (two year-olds only) or 11 am (three and four yearolds) from February 22nd through March 29th. Each class is about 45 minutes to an hour long.

The cost of the program is $20 per child. Space is limited and upon registration, the child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency.

The Toddler’s Arts & Crafts Program is run by the Town’s Parks Department, Recreation Division. For further information, please call 516.797.4125, and hit prompt ‘4.’

Inspired Artwork Young artists at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District paid tribute to glass sculptor Dale Chihuly with a special art project. Under the direction of

art teacher Claire Merz, students recreated his glass art using coffee filters and spray starch. The children used all the colors of the rainbow to make radial circle designs. It was a safe

way for them to learn how blown glass is created. All of the projects were then hung on the bulletin board in the art room to create a schoolwide mural.

Police officers spoke about their roles in the community as Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9th. The guests included officers from the Nassau County and New York City police departments. Students were asked to wear blue as a show of support. Police officers discussed their jobs, showed some of the equipment they use and answered a wide range of questions during their classroom visits.

Many children wore paper hats designed to look like the real caps police officers wear. They also made cards to present to the uniformed guests. Members of the Student Council presented officers from the 7th Precinct POP unit with bags of candy to bring back to the station. Each piece of candy was symbolic, such as Life Savers for the roles as first responders and caramel for helping people get out of sticky situations. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a national initiative

sponsored by C.O.P.S. - Concerns of Police Survivors. This was the second year that Unqua has taken part in it. “This is a day designated to let law enforcement officials know that we recognize the importance of their jobs and that we appreciate all that they do for our community,” said Assistant Principal Patricia Quinn-Hendry, who coordinated the program. “There are many ways that a school community can show its support for our police officers.”

Building on earlier initiatives to enhance transparency and ethics, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board today approved a local law to create an Office of Inspector General to oversee all aspects of the Town’s contracting processes. In October 2017, the Town Board took the historic action of being the first local municipality to approve funding for such an office. “To restore the public’s trust in government, the Town Board and I took swift action to install a new, independent Board of Ethics with real and meaningful oversight. We have instituted disclosure requirements for contractors, vendors and high level employees to prevent conflicts of interest and improprieties. A former Federal prosecutor was appointed to serve as Town Attorney and employees - as well as elected officials - have been

mandated to attend an ethics training seminar,” stated Supervisor Saladino. “Building upon these initiatives to restore ethics, honesty, integrity and transparency, the Town will hire an Inspector General to administer all aspects of the Town’s contracting processes.” The Inspector General will be charged with standardizing the Town’s purchasing and contract administration; monitoring compliance with all applicable procurement guideline policies, and requirements of federal, state and local laws; providing technical expertise to ensure all contracts, requests for proposals and bid solicitations are posted on the Town’s website, and expanding the Town’s access to municipal and state electronic systems to verify the qualifications and standing of potential contractors. The Inspector General will have the authority to

Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Sparking Science Study Berner Middle School students were feeling the pressure in their science classes, as they participated in an experiment inspired by a book. All sixth-, seventhand eighth-graders in the Massapequa School District, along with middle school teachers and administrators, received a copy of “One for the Murphys” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt at the beginning of the school year. As part of Berner’s One School, One Book initiative, lessons based upon the book are

planned in every subject. In science classes, students recently participated in an air pressure experiment. Each group had to fill a soda bottle halfway with water, place two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a balloon and crush them, then place the balloon over the bottle opening. Students observed the chemical reaction caused by the carbon dioxide gas that was produced, which expanded the balloon. The experiment was based upon a line in the

book, “I know things are hard for you, but I think the release would make you feel better. You know, like shaking a Coke bottle. The pressure builds up.” After conducting the experiment, students analyzed and discussed the results. This is the fourth year of the One School, One Book initiative at Berner, with a different reading selection each year. The goal is to create passionate readers and good citizens through books that have positive life messages.

New CEO Welcomed

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) Board of Directors announces that Randell (Rande) Marie Bynum has been appointed as the Council’s newest Chief Executive Officer (CEO) following the recent retirement of former GSNC CEO Donna Ceravolo. Bynum, a third generation Girl Scout, brings decades of experience enhancing the efforts of nonprofit organizations. Her work includes the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and the Girl Scouts of USA, private corporations and media entities with a focus on education, community engagement and youth empowerment. “Rande embodies the spirit of a G.I.R.L [Gogetter, Innovator, RiskTaker, and Leader], and the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is delighted to welcome Rande as our new CEO,” said Wanda Jackson, President of GSNC’s Board of Directors. “After conducting a nationwide search, we are confident that Rande will be a terrific fit to lead our Council. In addition, she was also the publishing director of family and community engagement at Scholastic Inc. She received a Master of Social Work with concentrations in program planning, administration and research from Stony Brook University and also holds a B.A. from Binghamton University. Earlier in her career, Bynum was the Director, Program and Adult Development at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. She also worked at the Girl Scouts of the USA, where she was responsible for the implementation of The Dove Self-Esteem Fund corporate partnership and the development of the Girl Scout/Dove Self-Esteem Program. In her role at the Girl Scouts of the USA, she co-authored the acclaimed workbook Dove’s True You! -Sometimes I Feel Ugly and Other Truths About Growing Up.

“I am thrilled to be back at GSNC as your new CEO and delighted to see how this Council has grown and changed,” said Bynum. “Over the last 25 years, I have been fortunate to work with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Girl Scouts of the USA, in addition to other organizations focused on empowering youth and bringing families closer together. Nassau BOCES renamed the building that houses its music and theatre programs at the Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) in honor of the mother of legendary musician and Long Island native Billy Joel. The Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre was dedicated in late December at the art school’s Syosset campus. Rosalind Nyman Joel was born on February 15th, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip and Rebecca Nyman, who had emigrated from England. In a 1942 student musical production at City College of New York, she met Howard Joel, a German immigrant whose family had escaped Nazi Germany in 1939. World War II would interrupt their courtship, but after Howard’s service in the U.S. Army, he returned and they married in 1946. Rosalind supported various charitable endeavors. Progressing from her strong support in assuring his musical education, the son who would reach world renown as singer-songwriter Billy

His poignant song, “Rosalinda’s Eyes,” from the 1978 album 52nd Street, is a tribute to her, derived from the family history. Rosalind Nyman Joel passed away July 13th, 2014 at the age of 92. A longtime arts and music education advocate, Mr. Joel is a strong supporter of the Long Island High School for the arts. He conducted a Master Class for LIHSA students and has visited them in their classrooms. Mr. Joel pledged $1.5 million in 2016 to LIHSA. Of this amount, he contributed $1,000,000 in 2016, $250,000 in 2017 and the final $250,000 will be donated next year. In August, Mr. Joel gave a scholarship ($20,000) to a budding pianist who recently graduated from LIHSA to attend Berklee College of Music. The Joel Foundation also announced a pledge of $1 million to continue support for Exploring the Arts (ETA), the non-profit organization founded

by legendary singer Tony Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto, dedicated to strengthening arts education in public high schools. With support from the Joel Foundation, ETA will work closely with LIHSA to create exciting opportunities and rigorous instruction for its music students over the next four years. As an ETA Partner School, LIHSA will receive $100,000 and engage with ETA’s network of 27 Partner Schools in New York City for peer-to-peer professional development. Officers Sworn In On Tuesday January 9th, Legislator Sunderman had the honor of swearing in the Officers of the LongIsland ABATE. There are fourteen board members, two of which were newly elected members. Following their swearing in we had discussed some concerns such as, how the potholes were going to be handled come spring time and road safety. “Sharing the road with our motorcyclists is important as well as to make sure everyone gets

home safe, at the end of the day. Unsafe roads pose a very real danger to motorcyclists and we have to make sure they are safe for all vehicles; whether they have two wheels or four.” said Sunderman The Long Island ABATE or American Bikers for Awareness, Training, and Education is an organization which strives to provide training and education for motorcycle riders. Additionally, they not only provide bikers rights, but the rights of all

motorists. Many of their members are not bike riders but advocates for those who do ride. Sunderman was so impressed by their organization that he joined as a non-riding member. Meetings are held in Ronkonkoma and Massapequa, in order to accommodate all Long Islanders.
