Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions— influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving often represents freedom, independence and control. Signs that an Older Adult’s Driving Skills Need Testing So how do you know whether you or an older adult you know is developing difficulties as a driver? While walking home from school one afternoon, Thomas Lippolt and Scott Rathjen were alerted to a kitchen fire at a house. Their efforts helped residents safely escape and minimize property damage by containing the fire to the oven. They also rescued family pets. The holidays were on everyone’s mind in Mary Elizabeth Delaney’s class at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which created numerous opportunities to improve literacy and math skills. Children wrote about their holiday traditions on
triangular pieces of paper, which were then hung together on a bulletin board to form a Christmas tree. After learning about contractions, students wrote them on snowflakes along with the translations. They also made seasonal word art and solved math problems on their decimal
snowmen. Because the holidays are a meant to be a time for giving and kindness, students also wrote their wishes for the world on paper snow globes. The wishes included ending homelessness and hunger, finding a cure for cancer and no more litter.

It’s Time to Turn Our Backs on False Idols “You shall have no other Gods before me” - Exodus 20:2-3 Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Les Moonves... R. Kelly. Yes, I said it. We’re in quite a pickle, aren’t we? As a culture we have allowed mass media to convince us that those who become public figures in entertainment are idols to be worshipped. I know, I know... not you. You’re above it all, but let’s say for the sake of argument that most people aren’t. Fair? Following your favorite celebrities on social media, buying magazines when they grace the cover, tuning in to watch awards shows, hanging up posters on your bedroom wall as a teenager. Shall I go on? The past year or so has left society reeling with the realization that many famous people are deeply flawed and sometimes do some very bad things. But why the shock and awe, and devastation? They’re only human, many of them with severe problems. As a culture, we have a bigger problem. We’ve
allowed ourselves to worship false idols. Going back to the days of the O.J. Simpson trial that transfixed our nation, we couldn’t believe that this handsome, charismatic football superstar could actually be just a person who most likely committed a heinous crime. Did you know the construct of “celebrity” is really only about 100 years old? That’s a drop in the bucket. Prior to 1920, there were no radios in people’s homes. The first “talkie” film was around 1927, and televisions weren’t in homes until 1949. Up until the 20th century you could go to theatre, or read a book, magazine or newspaper. The media was a fraction of the size it is now, and people were community oriented. The typical family was focused on their home, their community, their church or synagogue and their neighbors. With the relatively recent constructs of record companies, movie studios, television studios and social media, executives needed to mythologize their stars in order to commoditize them. They needed to strategize ways
to make you love entertainers so you would purchase albums and movie tickets, and tune into television programs. It generates advertising and sales revenue. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment. In fact, I believe that the arts are nourishing to the spirit and play an important role in our existence. But idol worship has led us down a murky path. In my journalistic work interviewing entertainers, I have tried to use that platform to peel away the celebrity veneer and show the person’s humanity to readers. Maybe I have succeeded at this or maybe I have failed. That is up to you to decide. You’re entitled to your opinion either way. With my son, I try to impart to him that although he can enjoy great music, theatre, film and television, the people he should be looking to as his role models are the people who touch his life on a daily basis; the people who care for him and his well being. The only being that we pray to and worship in our home is G-d. For that is as it should be.
Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs. Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community. They also encourage long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and they support efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation. A lovely young woman, Erin, with a developmental disability has had great success with this foundation. Erin, from Commack has the ability to make decisions and choose her own path through Self Direction. After graduating from High School in 2010, Erin went on to graduate from Eastern Suffolk Boces in 2013. Once she aged out at 21 years old, she and her family chose to Self-Direct her adult services. By doing so she has been successful in accomplishing many of her personal goals! Erin has been employed by her local Stop & Shop for over seven years and has even been honored as Employee of the Month! Additionally, she has built a strong network of social connections. Erin was one of the original members of Big Time Glee, a grassroots singing group that was started by the PBS Community Foundation with just a few young adults meeting weekly at the Leader’s home and singing regularly at community
Senior Centers. She now participates in Big Time Glee (which has grown to 25+ attendees), the Crafting Connection and the PBS Campus Experience at Stony Brook University. Erin says she looks forward to participating in the PBS Community Foundation initiatives because she enjoys singing and performing in the community and she looks forward to being able to “hang out with her friends”. These activities have led to meaningful relationships, connections and other social and recreational opportunities in her community! Lastly, Erin volunteers her time to the Guide Dog Foundation and participates weekly in a cooking class, which helps her gain independent living skills. This supports her ultimate goal of living on her own one day. Erin shows us that her disability doesn’t stand in the way of her abilities. She is a hard-working, social, determined young lady and an inspiration to her family and friends! This food pantry started in 1998 and has a large selection of non-perishable food items, which are available for all residents of Nassau County, regardless of religious affiliation. The pantry, which is located at Congregation Beth Ohr at 2550 Centre Avenue, is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and is staffed by volunteers from the congregation and the community. Postcards from across the country fill a bulletin board in Tara Mathers’ third-grade classroom at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The project was the culmination of a lesson on geography and map skills. Each student wrote a
letter to someone they knew in another state and requested a postcard, in addition to asking his or her recipient to pass along the letter to get even more responses. Soon after, the postcards started coming in from all over the United States and even other countries.
By early January, the class had received postcards from 46 of 50 states, with the most popular being Florida. Postcards included pictures of animals, college campuses, historical sites, stadiums and other tourist attractions.

Transformative Art at McKenna kindergarten through fifth-grade, but also captures the development of their artistic abilities. The self-portraits are made with pencil and crayon, and finished with a watercolor wash. The students are aided by mirrors and “This is me”
sheets that note physical features such as eye color, face shape and hair style. Ms. Cervone keeps all of the completed selfportraits and gives them to the children upon their graduation from elementary school.
Massapequa High School’s Key Club fulfills its community service mission with charitable activities throughout the year, including an annual holiday toy drive in partnership with the Kiwanis Club. Students and staff were
able to donate new toys during a two-week period in December. Key Club members gathered the toys and wrapped them afterschool on December 18th. The following day, they traveled to the Head Start program in Amityville to spread Christmas cheer.
Adviser Michael LaBella dressed up as Santa while the student elves handed out toys to approximately 100 children. Additionally, the high school students sang Christmas carols and played games with the youngsters during their visit.

Teaching Problem Solving Engineer and inventor Rube Goldberg, known for his wacky and complicated machines, inspired fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in the Magnet program, led by teacher Lorie Moran, built their own Rube Goldberg contraptions. Each group had to
build a machine that accomplished a task. Justin Amante, Ioanna Livanis and Declan Stanton came up with a design that included a moving car and a ball going down a ramp before ending with a box of Cheerios spilling into a bowl. Other tasks included popping a balloon and watering a plant. Before building, students
had to create step-by-step plans and draw blueprints that identified the transfers of energy. The contraptions had to include different simple machines like levers and pulleys. Children made adjustments during a trialand-error process. They additionally used greenscreen technology to film infomercials for their machines.

students on December 19th and one for parents on December 20th. The band was led by Kristin Hodulick, the chorus by Jeanine Yako and the orchestra by Michael Molloy.
