While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Fifth graders in the Magnet program at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned what it takes to be a good leader. Working with teacher Loree Moran, students studied different leaders from past

to present, including many who are lesser-known, and analyzed important leadership qualities. Working in groups, students then had to create fictitious leaders who were charged with completing world-changing tasks.

Children envisioned people who cured cancer, achieved world peace and saved endangered species. Each group completed a model of their leader along with a narrative writing piece.

Town Accepting New Applications For 9/11 Walls Of Honor

Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each year, the Town inscribes into the Walls of Honor the names of family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and nearly 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic

exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. The Charity of the Month for January is: YMCA Long Island www.ymcali.org

The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/ Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Massapequa Coders Join Worldwide Movement

Elementary students throughout the Massapequa School District participated in Hour of Code activities throughout December to learn about computer programming. The annual initiative is sponsored by Code.org and features fun activities for children of all coding abilities, from beginner to expert. Lockhart Elementary School library media specialist Tara Gonzalez said that students in the upper grades have taken part in the Hour of Code for several years, so they were able to complete more concrete tasks. Her fourth and fifth graders were able to choose from among several different games. She noted that one class collectively wrote 500 lines of code in 30 minutes.

“They enjoy the challenge,” she said. “It’s exciting for the students to see their progress. They can build on what they know from previous years.” Ms. Gonzalez said that one of the more popular games was Dance Party, in which students programmed their characters to move along to the newest pop songs. Minecraft and Flappy Bird-themed games were also a big hit. At Fairfield Elementary School, kindergartners were introduced to coding with assistance from fifth grade buddies. Library media specialist Claire Mitchell said the older students served as experts to help their younger peers build “the foundation of coding.” Together they used Kodable to program movements for different charac-

ters. Fairfield was among 325 million locations in 82 countries participating in the Hour of Code. “It’s amazing from last year to this year how much more the students are able to do,” Ms. Mitchell said, adding that coding help them improve their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Melinda Alford, library media specialist at Unqua Elementary School, said there were activities for all students. Children in lower grades participated in interactive games on the SmartBoard that introduced them to dragand-drop coding, while students in upper grades programmed in Grinchthemed games on their Chromebooks.

Students Move To End World Hunger Just by getting up and moving for a few minutes, children at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are helping to end world hunger. Throughout December, classes from multiple grade levels participated in the collaborative effort.

Students were introduced to UNICEF’s Kid Power Up initiative. The movementinspired brain breaks vary from high energy dancing to yoga stretching, and everything in between. For every 10 exercise videos that students watch and move to, they earn a food pack that is delivered to

malnourished children in places such as Uganda. Third grade teacher Kimberly Kelly said that students spent the month making connections to the children they are helping by learning about holiday traditions and customs around the world.

Town Earns Veteran Award Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay was recently awarded the “Veterans’ Program Incentive Office Award” by the New York State Department of Labor for the work ethic of employees in the Massapequa Career Center. As part of the Veterans Program Incentive Office Award, the Massapequa Career Center was praised for their ability to help a higher percentage of veterans than non-veterans find employment, and was praised for having a lower percentage of unemployed veterans. “The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to supporting the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces upon their return

home,” said Supervisor Saladino. “From leadership to discipline and organization, our veterans have the skills that employer’s desire. Our career center is proud to support hometown heroes in their job search and provide veterans the opportunity to enhance their resumes, interviewing skills and network with recruiters. I commend the employees in our career center for this important recognition from New York State for their service to our veterans.” The Town’s Workforce Partnership program has been a huge success since its inception. Recent data released by the New York State Department of Labor indicates a 3.3% unemployment rate in the Town

of Oyster Bay - significantly lower than the County unemployment rate, the State unemployment rate, and the National unemployment rate. The Town’s Workforce Partnership has held numerous Job Fairs each year, and has worked closely with many high-profile local employers, such as National Grid, Altice USA, UPS Long Island, and People Care Inc., to help fill employment opportunities which can often range from ground level to management level positions.
