Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that residents who regularly receive recycling/yard waste collection in the Town of Oyster Bay may dispose of their Christmas tree on regular recycling/ yard waste days, ending Friday, January 15th. “We all love the beauty of Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the tree in a timely manner as Christmas trees can pose as a fire hazard, especially after drying out,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Proper and prompt disposal of a dried out tree is very important, and you can dispose of your tree at the next scheduled yard waste collection day.” For questions, call (516) 677-5848.

WHEN POLITICIANS LOSE SITE OF THEIR MISSION By Dr. Cynthia Paulis, Mayoral Candidate

How does someone get involved in politics? There are many factors as to why someone runs for office. For some it’s an ego driven goal to be in the limelight, the center of attention. For others it’s a family affair, just look back at the history of our politicians over the years. Then there is that rare breed who actually enters the race to make a difference in their community (usually spurred on by an event that becomes the defining moment in their life), that person who actually pays attention to issues affecting their community and asks the question, what are our elected leaders doing that are making a positive change in our community? Someone, with the courage to step in the political arena. That’s where I come in.

That night was my defining moment. I knew nothing about running for office so I did what I always do; I went to the library and took out books on how to run for office. I read, I studied, I asked questions and I learned about issues affecting the community. All I had to do was look around at the deterioration of our village. Trash, graffiti, roads with pot holes so deep they become lakes when it rains. When I was a child I remember the roads being maintained regularly and as the newly paved blacktop dried the neighborhood kids would run out with their skates and bikes to enjoy the smoothness of the road. Now you have to be careful you don’t break an ankle crossing the street or blowing out a tire or shocks on your cars when you ride on them. I have driven on third world roads that were better maintained than these. Where the heck are our tax dollars going? As taxes keep rising many residents are ﬂeeing the state because they can no longer afford to live in their homes. Then you add COVID on board and so many people are struggling; they have lost their jobs, their businesses, some are even losing their homes to foreclosure. But don’t worry about the people you elected to office. They are living quite well off your tax dollars, double dipping between the Town of Oyster Bay jobs and the village of Massapequa Park and not showing up for work. They have even given themselves significant raises out of a surplus of money, your tax dollars. Your current mayor, whose lightweight credentials include working for the TOB in the town animal shelter, then in the sanitation department before he was appointed as a village trustee, had the WORST ATTENDANCE RECORD in a twenty year history of the village minutes. How do I know? I read every page of the village meetings starting with the election of Altadonna for mayor whose issue was cell phone towers in the village in 2000. This was a hot button item with the community. He won by a landslide.

So where was your newly elected mayor when he was a trustee elected to represent you and show up for TWO meetings a month? ABSENT multiple times, an empty chair with a name plate. He missed so many meetings he even missed a meeting when he was supposed to be sworn in for office! However, he wasn’t the only one. There were several other trustees who missed meetings including some mayors. But don’t worry, not only did they get paid, some of them are getting HEALTH CARE FOR LIFE including their families and it comes out of our village taxes to the sum of $210,116 annually! Your current mayor promised to “end the politicians first agenda at Village Hall by repealing free health insurance for elected officials”. Not only did that not happen it continues.

He promised “transparency” and yet every work meeting they run behind closed doors so the public, by open meetings law can listen but not speak, are instead left in the dark. No mayor has ever had as many closed door sessions. He has had six closed door meetings. So much for transparency! He promised to “repave roads, remove trash along the LIRR”. Have you looked at your roads lately and the trash piling up? Shouldn’t that have been cleaned up all along since he is involved with the sanitation department at TOB? He even got a bump up in salary from $121,153 to $130,903 recently! While COVID numbers were raging in our village he was running around maskless at TOB fundraisers. He didn’t miss those meetings. He promised independence yet he has two trustees who are involved with the TOB including a newly appointed one who is also double dipping your tax dollars. This newly appointed trustee, an assistant deputy comptroller, is married to a former MPK trustee, an attorney who was arrested for insurance fraud and faced 7 years in jail for a multimillion dollar insurance ring fraud (Ref Massapequa Post Nov 6, 2002 by Carolyn James) So, in record time, this interim mayor has broken every promise he made. Is this who you really want to re-elect March 16? WAKE UP Massapequa Park!! You have a second chance to get it right this time. Last year I entered the race for Mayor of Massapequa Park after a gang shooting took place across the street from my home. A shooting so many people still were not aware took place because our politicians shut it down very quickly since their elections for higher office were just a week away. In spite of the major television stations camping out in front of our homes for days the politicians brushed it off as an isolated incident, don’t worry that people narrowly missed getting killed that night while sleeping in their own homes, “ This is the safest village in all of Long Island “ they declared with cameras rolling. As long as their needs were met and they got elected that’s all that mattered.

I wanted to understand how people came into office. They didn’t have any earth shattering credentials, they were just part of the club. They were appointed when someone either died or moved up to the TOB and like a house of cards sometimes the same people get shufﬂed around moving from one position to another only to get recycled back but always on your tax dollars.

For one month each year the world celebrates International Creativity Month, a time to remind individuals and organizations around the globe to capitalize on the power of creativity. January, the first month of the year, provides an opportunity to take a fresh approach to problemsolving and renew confidence in creative capabilities.

As the school day began on Nov. 24, student council officers loaded more than 30 boxes and bags filled with food into the back of an SUV outside of Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The club held its annual Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the parish outreach center at St. Rose

of Lima Church. Berner students and staff were asked to donate nonperishable goods such as canned vegetables, cereal, gravy, pasta, rice and more. Collection boxes were placed at the entrances to the school throughout the weeklong food drive. Led by advisers Denise

Robertson and Kristen Meoli, students sorted and packed the donations, which Ms. Meoli then delivered to the church. In addition to food, the student council also collected monetary donations and supermarket gift cards, so the outreach center could help families purchase fresh food.

Avoid Penalties by Paying General Four Massapequa Musicians Earn Taxes Prior to Feb. 10th All-State Selections Although Nassau County failed to provide towns with timely data for tax bills, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato and his staff have worked around the clock to mail all first half General tax bills by January 8th. Homeowners should note that this is the first General tax bill mailed under County Executive Laura Curran’s reassessment and her 2021 property tax hike. While the General tax bill includes amounts for the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and special districts, the Town of Oyster Bay did not raise taxes in 2021. Any changes in your taxes are due to Nassau County and its reassessment system, which resulted in tax hikes for 65% of homeowners. “My office has worked tirelessly to prepare and mail tax bills after having received untimely data from Nassau County. The Town of Oyster Bay held the line on property taxes for a third straight year, and any change in your town taxes is the result of the County Executive’s reassessment process,” said Receiver Pravato. Residents are reminded that the First Half of the 2021 General Tax Levy was due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 10th. Please be certain to sign your check,

payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and Phone number on the check. Because Nassau County provided untimely data to the towns, Receiver Pravato has written to Governor Cuomo to request a 30 day extension deadline for taxpayers. The Governor has not yet responded, but hope remains that an extension will be granted. “New York State laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” added Receiver Pravato. “After the 40 days, State law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 10th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.” During this public health crisis, the Tax Office has been fully operational but has suspended in office interactions. New outdoor walk up windows are available at Town Hall North (74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay) and at Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa) daily from 9:00am to 4:45pm to assist residents and accept payments with either a

check or money order. No cash or credit card payments will be accepted. On February 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00am to 6:00pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Payments being made by mail should include the payment stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject the payment. Taxpayers can access 2021 General tax information at www. oysterbaytown.com. Residents may view tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment or credit/debit card (subject to third party fees, no portion remitted to the Town of Oyster Bay). For more information on property taxes and/or payments, residents may call at (516) 624-6400. Callers are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Four Massapequa High School students will showcase their musical abilities at this year’s All-State Music Festival, hosted by the New York State School Music Association. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual music conference will be held online. Kate Dramer (alto) and Carli Sanger (soprano) were chosen to NYSSMA vocal ensembles for the second time. Kate will perform with the treble chorus and Carli with the mixed

chorus. Mia Tichacek, also a second-time selection, will play the violin in the string orchestra. Jackson MacLeod, who plays the snare drum, was chosen as an alternate for the band’s percussion section. Their selection to these highly-competitive ensembles was based on evaluation scores and comments from the spring 2019 NYSSMA assessment as well as detailed recommendations from their music teachers. The 2020 Cyber Summit will

feature music workshops, guest speakers, virtual showcase and student performances. All-State musicians will also join virtual ensembles for a closing concert. Principal Barbara Lowell, Director of Fine and Performing Arts Vincent Green and music teachers Eva Arnold, Ilena Dempsey, Andrew Dwork, Nichole Green and Marjorie Spagnuolo congratulate the student-musicians on their accomplishment.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis Imbroto recently announced that Session 2 of the Town’s 2021 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program will begin on February 6th. This youth hockey program features hockey development, skill programs and a seasonend skills competition over the course of 10 weeks at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. The program is open to girls and boys ages 6-16. “Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is among the best around,

with a dedicated coaching staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.” Registration will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on: • Wednesday, January 20th from 5pm - 8pm (residents only); • Thursday, January 21st from 5pm – 8pm (residents only); • Sunday, January 24th from 8am – 12pm; and • Monday, January 25th from 5pm – 8pm. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Individuals interested in registering for the 2021 Winter Youth Ice Hockey Program must bring a copy of their birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill) as well as payment. Check,

money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration. The program is held on Sunday mornings, and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The registration fee is $150 for 10 weekly sessions. All participants must provide their own equipment, and should have some skating ability. Buses stocked with toydelivering elves drove to homes all over Long Island to make wishes come true for over 400 families coping with cancer and serious illness. “We started this event knowing that all parents feel the pressure to make

the season magical for their children, but when families are stressed with medical visits, painful treatments, and financial burdens, taking part in holiday festivities can be overwhelming, notes Melissa Firmes, President, KiDS NEED MoRE. “We wanted to make the experience not only wonderful for the children, but also as a gift to the entire family, and a

Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

The mission of this non-proﬁt is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. COUNCILMAN HAND HONORS CONSTANCE BELEGRINOS - Oyster Bay Town Councilman Thomas Hand recently honored Constance Belegrinos, longtime employee of the Massapequa Water District, upon her official retirement as Business Manager for the Water District. Constance had served as Business Manager since 2002, and Councilman Hand congratulated her and commended her on the exceptional job she did serving the constituents of the Massapequa Water District for nearly 20 years.

COVID-19 has impacted tens of thousands of Long Islanders, and many who have recovered from the virus are now combatting a variety of lingering health issues as a result. Known as “long-haulers” these individuals are living with the chronic effects of the virus that can include organ damage, poor lung function, fatigue, muscle aches, cognitive slowing and headaches. Also, long-

haulers still exhibit various symptoms of COVID even after testing negative for the virus. “The long-lasting health effects of COVID-19 could affect anyone at any age, but appears to be more likely with those over the age of 50,” said Director of Infectious Disease at Catholic Health Service’s (CHS) St. Francis Hospital Alan M. Bulbin, M.D. “Those with other comorbidities, chronic illnesses or those

who have had a more serious acute infection are also more likely to be impacted. But we have also seen younger patients show longterm health impacts after recovering from the virus.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it is actively working to learn more about the range of short- and longterm health effects associated with COVID-19. CDC officials said continued research is

revealing that many organs, including the lungs and heart, are impacted by the virus. Dr. Bulbin recommends that medical treatment for long-haulers should be managed by an individual’s primary care physician. He said the challenge currently facing doctors in treating those with longlasting health results from COVID-19 is identifying the proper treatment regimen.

To help those dealing with long-term health effects of COVID-19, CHS’s St. Charles Hospital now offers a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program. Patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis are provided medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training, strength training and education. Recognizing a need to develop a program

The Middle Island facility has had a pulmonary support group for several years, but the partnership

with the ALA is a new venture, resulting in twice the number of group participants. “With this support group we hope to promote respiratory health and a better sense of well-being for those living with chronic lung disease,” Robert Madigan, Director of the Cardio Pulmonary program at Surge. The support group can also address lingering issues experienced by patients who

have had COVID-19. The support group will cover an introduction to cardiopulmonary diseases; the benefits of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation; the role of family support in cardiopulmonary disease; heart healthy medical nutrition therapy and communicating with healthcare professionals. The monthly support group meets every 3rd Wednesday at 1pm of the month and is
