UNMASKING HYPOCRACY IN THE VILLAGE OF MASSAPEQUA PARK By Dr. Cynthia Paulis

The work meetings which start at 7 pm prior to the public meetings are supposed to be open to the public. However there were 6 executive sessions held behind closed doors so the public, you the taxpayers, could not know what was being planned, all orchestrated by your newly elected mayor and the lawyer from Garden City, who rode into town 20 years ago as Altadonna’s personal attorney, planted roots in the village meetings and never left. Twenty years ago Altadonna passed a resolution getting rid of health care for life for part time workers and elected officials, which at that time was costing the village $60,000 annually. Health care is not going down its going up and up. SO five months into this new team which now also included a newly appointed member who works full time for the TOB as a Deputy Comptroller (are you starting to see a pattern here folks) the health care for life still continued. Then on December 28, a meeting that few people would attend since it was in between Christmas and New Years, a surprise, there was nothing posted

on the revised agenda that would peak anyone’s interest. I showed up wearing a face shield in compliance with the village request to wear a face covering or mask. As I entered the room which had the trustees in attendance and one resident in the back I was rebuked by the mayor that I need a face mask. Ah the hypocrite who on December 11 was photographed at a big political party with all of his TOB cronies all maskless except for one, holding on to one another and no social distancing, was now chastising me for my face shield. This was also during the time when the Governor’s office specifically called out Massapequa Park as a hot zone. I called the village hall and suggested that the meetings should be zoomed for safety purposes but that was overruled by the mayor. At the request of the village administrator I removed my face shield and replaced it with a mask. The irony didn’t escape me. Then came the real surprise. There was the usual back door deals masked as “executive session”, then the public meeting and SURPRISE! a Resolution, which was not included on the AGENDA as it should have been. Instead the interim mayor was reading a convoluted resolution discussing Medical Coverage for Full Time and Elected Officials. No one had a copy so I requested one at the end of the meeting and I am wading through all of the legal jargon, but the bottom line is we are still on the hook for all of those people, because, well some of those folks helped get this mayor elected and they work full time at the TOB. So now we not only have the double dippers working off the taxpayer dollars from the village and the TOB but we are also on the hook for their health care for a PART TIME ELECTED POSITION. The team protected the 12 recipients of health care for life including a trustee who is coming up for reelection in March 2021. Trustees with poor attendance records (including our mayor who had the most absences in my 20 year review of minutes of the village meeting) not only got paid but, their health care for life paid by your taxes was protected. What a scam! Going forward new elected officials after September 12, 2020 will qualify for health care but pay only 10%. You will most likely be asked to request it in writing through a document known as a FOIL. I will continue providing this information in our next week’s article and unmasking facts verses fiction. As we thankfully end 2020 the one lesson we learned from COVID is just how hypocritical our politicians really are when it comes to rules. They believe in the mantra “Rules for thee NOT for me.” That has become even more apparent since the recent election in our village when the newly elected mayor ran on the platform of transparency, getting rid of health care for life for part time elected officials even though he sat on the board as a trustee for SEVEN YEARS said NOTHING until he decided to run for office. Remember in January when we all received an anonymous note deriding Teresa Spinosa. She even voted to give HERSELF free health care insurance for life paid for by us for a part time job. LET VOTERS DECIDE THEIR NEXT MAYOR NOT A BACK ROOM GROUP OF POLITICIANS. For those who missed it, the room was filled to capacity as angry villagers held up the anonymous note. No one knew of this health care for life for a part time elected position. I took it one step further and decided to investigate and FOILED documents and discovered that 12 individuals, including two recent mayors who worked full time at the Town of Oyster Bay, were receiving health care for life (and their families) at $30,000 annually including vison and dental. This undisclosed boondoggle is costing the village taxpayers annually $210,115.99. Let’s not forget that these elected officials only meet TWICE a month. So this new team of a pharmacist, who at one time owned ARLO drug before he sold it, a trustee who works in the sanitation department of the Town of Oyster Bay, and a housewife whose husband works full time in the sanitation department of the TOB and is now our newly elected assemblyman, ran for office promising to get rid of this financial albatross of lifetime healthcare. But their memories were short and their declarations were not completely honest.

Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-proﬁt is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to ﬁve gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced that residents who regularly receive recycling/yard waste collection in the Town of Oyster Bay may dispose of their Christmas tree on regular recycling/yard waste days for the next two weeks, ending Friday, January 15th. “We all love the beauty of Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. of the honor society along with Patti Krakoff, said that the contributing students and teachers had the option of submitting hand-drawn or digitally created pieces. Because it will be published online, people will have the option of selecting the pages they want to complete and can print them out at home. “We wanted to make sure that it was accessible to everyone and digital was the way to go,” Mr. Leone said, noting that the art honor society is a servicebased organization. “This was a way to do it safely and contribute to the community in a meaningful way.” Honor society copresidents Gabriella Auz and Kayla Hassett said that the organization has created coloring books in the past, and this was a good year to revive the

idea to raise the spirits of the Massapequa school community during the pandemic. They said that all of the drawings are of holiday and winter scenes.

When the coloring book is released, they will also announce a hashtag so people can share their colored-in pieces on social media.

Dozens of talented student-artists at Massapequa High School joined forces with art teachers from the Massapequa School District to spread some cheer in the community. They are creating a digital coloring book, set to be released prior to the holiday break. The idea was conceived by officers from the high school’s National Art Honor Society. Art students from both the main and Ames campuses, as well as elementary and secondary level art teachers, contributed drawings for the book. It is expected to be about 100 pages when complete. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York

Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding

the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive

Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a shortterm increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

Massapequa Native Supports Navy Leader Development A 2011 Kellenberg Memorial High School graduate and native of Massapequa, is currently serving with the U.S. Navy as a class officer and navigation curriculum manager at Officer Training Command Newport (OTCN). Lt. Arthur C. Morales is part of a dedicated team that transforms civilians and fleet sailors into future leaders of our Navy and our nation. “I am proud of the dedication and efforts of the Officer Training Command Newport team in developing future leaders for a Navy that can fight and win,” said Capt. Mark C. Hazenberg, OTCN commanding officer. Morales, a surface warfare officer, has served at OTCN since August 2019. He previously served as the electrical division officer aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). “I am setting the

benchmark of what it means to be a leader in the fleet through the development and mentorship of our young, future leaders,” said Morales. “Coming from USS Carl Vinson, I’m able to share my experiences and make an impact on how they will carry themselves in the fleet.” Morales earned his commission in 2015 through the Navy ROTC program at George Washington University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering and a minor in naval science. “I joined the Navy because it allowed me to become a leader early on,” said Morales. “It provided me direction. I once was a timid and shy person, now I am very confident in public speaking and can lead by example. Not many jobs afford you to work in such a diverse environment.” Morales is the son of Arthur and Karen Morales, who both
