7 Deadly Mistakes That Will Cost You Thousands When You Sell Your Home LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

SWINGING INTO WINTER - The gymnasium at Fairfield Elementary School was transformed to create a winter obstacle course throughout December. During their physical education classes, students ran through hula hoops, crawled under a web, walked across a balance beam, raced on scooters and climb a wall, among other activities. The course ended with them swinging on a rope and the then writing down their New Year’s resolution on a large piece of paper to “swing into the new year.” Photo courtesy of: Massapequa School District

Mural Planned A new mural will soon grace the halls of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus following a schoolwide competition. Ninth-grade Jaclyn Portogallo created the winning design. The school’s Shared Decision Making Committee, comprised of administrators, teachers, students and parents, looks at ways to beautify the school and decided to replenish a mural near the main entrance.
Students submitted designs based on the theme, “What does is mean to be a part of the Massapequa Chiefs family?” More than 50 entries were submitted and the committee chose the top 10. Students then voted online and selected Jaclyn’s design. Her blue and gold mural incorporates the Chiefs logo and an acrostic using the word “chief” to highlight the school’s main principles character, honesty,
integrity, excellence and family. Jaclyn and fellow art students will begin painting the mural in the new year. “We’re very enthusiastic and very excited about the student contribution to the school culture and climate,” said Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal. “Jaclyn did a beautiful job. We’re very proud of her work and all the students who made an effort to contribute.”

Merry Musicians Kindergartners celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, dazzling their parents with holiday songs
in a morning performance. During the annual Kindergarten Jingle Ball, students sang “Twinkle, Twinkle Hanukkah Lights,” “Jingle Bells,” “I’m a Little Latke” and “Rudolph the
Red-Nosed Reindeer.” The five kindergarten classes performed together after two weeks of rehearsal. Children and their parents then enjoyed holiday snacks.
LENDING A HAND - Gemma Gabriel and Peyton George, kindergartners at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, held their donations for the school’s Mitten Tree. The drive was organized by the Student Council, which collected gloves, hats and other winter accessories for Long Island Cares as well as families within the school district. Science Made Simple
MASSAPEQUA PARK - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 4, 2017 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
Sixth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District discovered a fun way to learn about science, as Mad Scientist “Xenon
Zach” recently visited classrooms. Zach, from Mad Science, taught students about the six simple machines: levers, pulleys, wedges,
screws, inclined planes, and wheels and axles. MERRY MUSICIANS - Students at McKenna Elementary School performed holiday During the hands-on songs for parents during the Kindergarten Jingle Ball. Cars of the Future
Technology skills old and new come together every Thursday afternoon at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. Students in the after-school Technology Club build MagLev vehicles as a way to learn about engineering. The process starts with students researching car designs on their SCIENCE MADE SIMPLE - Xenon Zach from Mad Science showed Fairfield Elementary School sixth-graders, from left, Lily Nolan, Michael Marino and Isabella Chromebooks and then Presta the basics of simple machines. Tracking the Timeline
Fifth-grade students in Matthew Cunha’s class at Fairfield Elementary School created timelines, “U.S. Government: Where Did it Come From?” As part of a social studies assignment, the students
studied the evolution of the nation’s democracy from the Mayflower Compact to the early 1800s, analyzing changes caused by the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and
the saw to craft the shape of their vehicle. They then add spackle, sand it and paint it. Magnets are added to the bottom, modeling the magnetic levitation technology that is already used for trains, and the cars are raced down a track. “This is what designers and engineers do to produce all of the things that we use,” said adviser Kenneth Schmitz. “The students learn about science and math, physics in particular, and the future of transportation.”
In the spring, members of the Technology Club will take a trip to Brookhaven National Laboratory where they will race their cars against students from other schools and have their designs judged by real scientists. Eighth-grader Anthony Ripo said that although each student builds his or her own car, they can still work together and share ideas, which is what he enjoys most about being a member of the Technology Club.

A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at
Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and “Gentil Invention No. 1.” Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck.
“What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues in the world.” The competition will be held in

Onward & Upward (Hopefully) By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the
most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.
And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.
CHEDDAR handsome orange tabby; fairly reserved
DOLORES Pit Bull Terrier of around 2 years-old; sweet and gentle

Master Class Successful dancer, singer and actress Julia Macchio - daughter of renowned actor, director, producer and filmmaker Ralph Macchio - recently conducted a Master Class at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). A number of LIHSA dance students participated in the class, where Ms. Macchio shared her experiences on stage, in film and with the auditioning process. She led students in a dance lesson and
offered individualized critiques of each student’s performance. The class was part of the school’s Master Class program, in which students learn under the guidance of some of the greatest talents in the industry. Previous master classes have been led by Mr. Ralph Macchio, the internationally renowned Pilobolus Dance Theater, dancer Alex Brady of the Twyla Tharp Dance Company, Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz Ensemble and America’s Got Talent
finalist Taylor Mathews Ms. Macchio recently completed a national tour as the lead in the acclaimed Flashdance: the Musical and is currently in production on the network feature Wholly Broken. She appeared alongside comic icon Kristen Wiig in the film Girl Most Likely and performed in the Radio City Music Hall production Spring Spectacular. She is a Long Island native and a graduate of Hofstra University.
