Seventh graders in the Massapequa School District gained an understanding of the harmful effects of smoking from a guest presenter who strives to educate youngsters by sharing his personal story. Frank Mullahey, of Massapequa, has been visiting Berner Middle School for more than 15 years to speak to students during their health classes. Mr. Mullahey explained that he started smoking when he was 12 and continued the habit for four decades. More than 20
years ago, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and was given months to live. A surprise recovery led to Mr. Mullahey’s desire to “do something positive” and teach children about the dangers of smoking. He noted the short-term and long-term effects of smoking, including having his voice box removed. Mr. Mullahey speaks with a Servox, an amplifier that he holds up to his throat to pick up the vibrations of his vocal cords. Additionally, he can’t go swimming and can’t eat certain food. As part of his presenta-
tion, Mr. Mullahey shares strategies with students on how to say “no” if they are being pressured to smoke, as well as how to approach a family member about quitting smoking. Teacher Luana Dunn said Mr. Mullahey’s presentation supports the seventh grade health curriculum which includes a unit on smoking. Ms. Dunn explained that in addition to warnings about tobacco products, the unit has expanded in recent years to include vaping.

MARINE IS ON A MISSION - The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again. Along with paying fees to allow the dog to leave, there is medical care, airfare, and other relocation expenses involved. Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family
Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Sounds of the holidays filled the Massapequa High School auditorium on Dec. 16 for the annual “An Afternoon of Holiday Music” performance. Students from the high school’s orchestra and vocal groups played numerous songs during the free community concert. The orchestra, conducted by Marjorie Spagnuolo, performed “A Mad Russian’s Christmas,” “Christmas Festival”
and Sleigh Ride. Ilena Dempsey led the Treble Choir in “Tota Pulchra Es,” “Hanukkah, Light of Lights” and “Deck the Halls” before its closing performance of “Peace on Earth” that featured soloists Nicole Ferretti, Lia Howard, Bianca LaSpina and Emmeline McBride. In their blue gowns with yellow trim, the A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Nichole Greene, began their set. They opened with “Gloria” from “Missa

Massapequa Basketball Game To Fight Pancreatic Cancer The annual Massapequa fundraiser basketball game, featuring coaches, alumni and community members, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4 from noon to 2 p.m. at Massapequa High School. This event is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town’s Department of Community and Youth Services will be offering free musical performances during the month of January 2020 at local libraries throughout the Town to continue the 20192020 Distinguished Artists Concert Series, which will

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Parks Department will begin to offer a night fishing parking permit to nonresidents, effective January 1, 2020. In order to obtain the permit, a non-resident must be sponsored by a current Town resident who has already obtained a night fishing permit. Supervisor Saladino stated, “As the popularity
