TOWN BOARD HONORS MASSAPEQUA PARK COUPLE - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board honored Massapequa Park resident Antonina Barry and her boyfriend Daniel Shea for their lifesaving actions to prevent a deadly house fire. While setting up for a backyard graduation party, they noticed their neighbors’ house was on fire and raced next door to alert them. Thanks to the couple’s quick response, their neighbors were able to safely evacuate before a backyard propane tank exploded and sent a fireball into the home. The blaze it caused was so enormous that it required firefighters from more than ten departments across Long Island. Presenting them with official Town citations, Supervisor Saladino publicly commended and thanked Antonina and Daniel for demonstrating an ability to act courageously when fellow citizens are in need.

Curran Announces New Mental Health Service for Veterans In ongoing support of Suicide Prevention Month, and as military and Veterans suicides continue to rise at an alarming rate (25% in 2020), County Executive Curran was joined with local Veterans and the Veterans Services Agency (VSA) to announce a new support system for Nassau’s Veterans. Nassau’s VSA will soon be equipped with in-house social workers, specializing in assisting veterans with crisis counseling, substance abuse and other mental health related issues. The County aims to have the services available six days a week (Monday through Saturday) at no cost to local veterans. “Our Veterans Service Agency does a fantastic job supporting the brave men and women who have served our country and the acquisition of specialized crisis counselors will only

expand on what they offer to our Veterans. So many people were affected by mental health issues the past year, and our Veterans are no exception. We are proud to soon be able to offer the specialized help that they need to get them through tough times,” said County Executive Curran. “Veterans experience unique behavioral and mental health issues and often need unique support to conquer them. With the new crisis counselor service, we will be able to provide the help our Vets need. County Executive Curran has once again fought to do the right thing for Nassau’s Vets and we thank her for her ongoing support,” said Ralph Esposito, Director of Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. The service will be free for all Veterans but will target Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans, who are

2.5x more likely to die by suicide. The crisis counselors will be licensed social workers specializing in veterans / military distress and will offer in person crisis intervention services, care coordination support and linkage to peer support services. These crisis counselors will be trained to support veterans combatting mental illnesses, suicidal thoughts, substance use disorder and emotional distress. The program is being developed by the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and will be supported by American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding. Curran also announced a Veterans picnic, open to Veterans and their families, on October 23 from 11am to 2pm at Eisenhower Park. The event will have free food and entertainment as well as an array of support services available to

Veterans in Nassau County. County Executive Curran also reminded the public of existing VSA programs, such as the Vet2Vet program. Vet2Vet is a nationally modeled

Kindness isn’t just an action, it’s a superpower. That was the message to students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who attended the Cultivate Kindness assembly on Sept. 22, presented by the ReesSpecht Life Foundation. Presenter Rich Specht told students in third, fourth and fifth grade a story about his family and how they were the recipient of an incredible

act of kindness. In response, he, his wife and his children went on a mission to “pay it forward” with at least 500 random acts of kindness. He shared how small gestures can make a big difference and reminded students that their kindness can change the world. In his presentation for grades K-2, Mr. Specht shared his book, “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” about a young boy who discovers how kindness is like a seed

and it can grow through good deeds. The book was written in honor of his 22-month-old son. The assembly was presented in partnership with the McKenna PTA. Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry and Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said the goal of the assembly was to set a positive tone at the beginning of the school year and watch kindness spread throughout McKenna.

I have formed a sub-committee for the purpose of recommending a way to honor our past Town Supervisor - the late John Venditto. Supervisor Venditto was very supportive of the Chamber for many years, and we are trying to show our appreciation by memorializing him in some way. Stay tuned for the committee’s recommendation and enactment of their decision.

Past President Patty Orzano will be starting the Food Drive and Toy Drive for Toys for Tots, along with assistance from Past President Phyllis Doria and our Board. We appreciate your support of these programs. I have also appointed Second Vice President Karen Gawrych as our new Scholarship Committee Chairperson for the springtime awards that we give to local senior students. The awards will be $250 each as last year, and our local high schools and members are the benefactors of this fine program. Lastly, a reminder that Chamber dues renewal notices will go out in November. The dues will be $130 annually and $200 if you want to add the website advertisement that we offer for the additional $70. Please remit as soon as possible when you receive the invoice in the mail. I look forward to seeing all at the next meeting.

Good communication is important for success in all aspects of life, and fourth graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently participated in an activity to develop those skills. Teacher Danielle Polo shared several tips with students on how to hold meaningful conversations.

They learned that good listeners and good speakers make eye contact, ask questions politely and don’t interrupt each other. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! Town Clerk LaMarca Announces Special One-Stop Passport Weekend

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special onestop Passport Weekend on Saturday, October 23rd and Sunday, October 24th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. “Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive free assistance in preparing their application,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.” Requirements for applying for a passport include: One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls

North and South during Passport Weekend. Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship. Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents). Town Clerk LaMarca has offices located at Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa.
