Weather Or Not: Ames Students Dabble In Meteorology The meteorology class at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently wrapped up its annual forecast competition. During the 12-week contest in the second semester, ninth graders apply the forecasting techniques they have learned to make reallife weather predictions locally and in cities across the country. Every week, students enter a forecast for two cities. One is always Farmingdale, which has the closest official weather station at Republic Airport. The second city rotates each week and this year included Saranac Lake, New York; Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; International Falls, Minnesota; Barrok, Alaska; Mount Washington, New Hampshire; Honolulu; Seattle; San Francisco; Orlando, Florida; Los Angeles; Chicago and Las Vegas. Before forecasting for a new city, a pair of students

give a detailed presentation with relevant information such as normal weather conditions, weather records and topography. During the competition students enter a forecast for the two cities Monday through Friday, including maximum temperature, minimum temperature and amount of precipitation that they think each city will have the following day. They access computer model data to guide their decisionmaking. and submit their forecasts online. Predictions are then verified with the official observations from each weather station. In addition to competing against fellow students, the students also compete against teacher Nicholas Donohue, alumni forecasters, the National Weather Service, other guest forecasters and various computer models. Each forecaster has a weather-

related code name that is used to keep the identity of each competitor a secret until the end of the competition. This year’s top overall student forecaster was Jeffrey Ram (codename “Atmospheric River”), who finished second behind only Mr. Donohue (“Anvil Crawler”). Andreas Efstathiou (“Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service”) was the runner-up. Matthew Moran (“La Nina”) was the top finishing alumni forecaster, finishing fifth overall in this year’s competition. Now a sophomore at the high school’s main campus, he was the top student forecaster in last year’s competition. Winners received an academic prize along with a T-shirt welcoming them into the elite group of Massapequa forecasters known as the Chief Meteorologists.

Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 44th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player coed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 16, 2022 and will be held rain or shine. The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. “Kinexion, (pronounced “connection”), is a brand new management service organization (MSO) on Long Island that oversees seven separate non-profits and provides them with infrastructure that frees them up to focus on what they do best, which is to offer best-in-class services to individuals with disabilities and progress society to a point where it embraces people of all abilities. “We created Kinexion to unite seven existing non-profits under one roof to eliminate duplicative overhead and back-office operations,” said Walter W. Stockton, CEO of Kinexion. “By being part of a large organization, these agencies get to participate in sharing in costs and saving money and in learning new things about providing the best services we can for the people that we serve.” One of those non-profits is Independent Group Home (IGHL), which opened its first group home in Mt. Sinai in 1978 to provide a community-based, homelike environment that encouraged personal growth and a genuine sense of belonging to a community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, IGHL has developed multiple community home opportunities, and a complete services network throughout Suffolk County. IGHL also runs Day Treatment programs, residential homes and communitybased residential homes to allow people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience living in a home environment while receiving the specialized care they require. “The goal of IGHL’s residential program is to encourage growth and independence while providing a genuine sense of belonging,” said Stockton, who is also President & CEO of IGHL. “We help each of our residents and program participants be as independent as possible. We teach

a variety of skills, including money management, cooking, travel training, and home management. We’ve been very successful in providing unique opportunities for individuals to live independent, productive lives in the community.” Another Kinexion afﬁliate is The New Interdisciplinary School, an innovative early childhood learning center that respects the unique needs of all children and their families. Started by a coalition of parents, community and staff in 1976, the school provides education and therapeutic services. “At NIS, we believe in the rights of every child to grow and learn in a supportive environment, and the rights of parents to have a real voice in their children’s education,” said Jay Silverstein, Executive Director of NIS. “We are always willing to try new approaches that are compatible with our child-centered philosophy. We strongly believe each child, regardless of disability, ethnic background or socioeconomic status has the right to develop to his/ her fullest potential.” This organization offers classes ranging from small self-contained groups to larger inclusion classes. All children have opportunities to learn and socialize with their typically developing peers.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 8th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This year’s round-the-clock event begins on the morning of July 21st at 9am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 22nd at 9am. The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 21st at 5:00 pm to honor hometown Vietnam War veterans and present them with medals that

commemorate their service to our nation. There will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a wonderful game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking for a fun-family event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit

the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. The event features 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. The score is cumulative, resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. Participants include children, adults, seniors, youth, high school, college players and veterans. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play. Controlling Costs For Consumers, Despite Record Setting Inflation Rates. Inflation rates are higher now than they have been in decades, and costs are impacting consumers and companies around the United States. Small businesses are struggling to keep pricing down and stay open. Many business owners are grappling with how to deliver customers the best quality products at the lowest price possible. We talked with local company Unified Home Remodeling, on how they are combating inflation to keep prices down during this time. Unified is leveraging its long-standing partnerships with national manufacturers to control costs and reduce unnecessary price hikes for consumers. The company is passing on many exclusive deals and rebates they receive from large quantity purchases to customers to retain some of the most competitive pricing in the market. “For nearly 35 years, Unified has forged relationships with national manufacturers and suppliers to help control costs during some of the most challenging financial times in recent history,” said Steve DiMare, Founder of Unified. “We have increased our internal efficiencies by developing seamless ordering, delivery, and invoicing procedures over the years – and we are proud to put those cost-savings right back into our customers’ pockets.” While Unified is able to do this with their long history and dedicated staff many other companies are not able to do this and are forced to increase their pricing. Some prices for products like windows, doors, siding, roofing, and masonry have increased over 150% since 2020. With price jumps continuing to be given to companies every month, and sometimes every week, only the most dedicated companies will be able to keep costs down for their customers.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Laura Maier, and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato joined with Nassau County Legislator Steven Rhoads and the NYS Police Chiefs Association to distribute over 200 free lifejackets to children aged infant through 12 as summer kicks off and families spend more time on the

water. “In addition to being the law of the land for all children under 12 years of age in New York State, the decision to wear a lifejacket is one that can save a life,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Even the strongest of swimmers can be compromised or unable to find a life vest during a dangerous situation, which is why this event is

so critical.” The free lifejackets distributed at this event were made possible thanks to the New York State Police Chiefs Association and charitable funds they derive from South Shore Marine Supply, Guardian Bus, Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, EXIT Realty Dreams, Jersey Mike’s Subs and local author, Gary Slavin.

All Town Pools Open Daily Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that all Town pools are open for the season. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing. Pool hours through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th will be 11am to 7pm daily, weather permitting. Additionally, extended hours until 8pm, will be offered as follows (weather permitting) at the following locations on the following schedule: Monday: SyossetWoodbury

Tuesday: Plainview-Old Bethpage Wednesday: Bethpage Thursday: Marjorie R. Post Fridays: ALL pools open late including Tappen Pool memberships can be obtained at each park location. Memberships are available at community park pools for both park district residents and nonpark district residents. Daily admission rates, nanny memberships and group access are also available. In addition to the great new amenities at our facilities, the Town is offering swimming lessons at local pools to members age five and older. Applications to register for swimming lessons will be available at each facility, with four swim lesson sessions available to

choose from. The Town will also offer a swim team this summer at outdoor pools located in Syosset-Woodbury Community Park and Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa. Town of Oyster Bay residents aged 6 to 16 are eligible to register for the swim program. Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, from 9:30am to 10:30am. Swim meets will be held Saturday mornings and class meets will be held Tuesday afternoons. Schedules will be distributed the first week of practice. Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym

Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more

distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn lifesaving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water. P = Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder. All toys and ladders should be stored away when not in use to avoid slips and falls, or entry without supervision.

L = Life Jackets. Life jackets should be worn when on a boat, canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. A = Adult Always Watching. Children should never be left unattended in or near a pool or any body of water, including a bath. Be sure to establish an adult water watcher to make sure that no child is ever left unsupervised—not even for a minute. S = Shut All Gates. Use self-closing and self-latching gates, gate alarms, pool alarms, children’s personal alarms, door alarms, and motion detecting devices. H = How to Rescue. Teach all caregivers infant, child/ adult CPR, first aid, and water rescue techniques. Always have the proper rescue equipment on hand: Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs), life ring, shepherds hook.
