n Saturday, April 20th, Massapequa Cub Scout Pack 696 joined together to clean up Brady Park & Preserve. The Scouts spent several hours removing litter and got a chance to enjoy the wonders of nature with the spotted white owls, carp and a toad. Many boys earned their Wildlife Badges and a free BBQ lunch in exchange for their hard work. Thanks to all the Scouts who participated in this great project.

Live LIPA Demo Massapequa Cubscout Pack 696 gathered together for their monthly pack meet on Friday night, April 19th, to learn about Electical Power. An experienced hightension power line operator demonstrated the potential hazards of high-tension wires using a doll-house sized model of power lines on
mounted on telephone poles. This LIPA teaching tool had live electrical current running through the power lines. This allowed the scouts to get a very life-like idea of what can happen if a downed line touches a school bus or a construction digger hits a power line on a project. The boys also had the opportunity to see what
can happen if a person climbing a tree attempts to touch a power line, and to understand the hazards of kite-flying near power lines. The scouts were thoroughly engaged and went home understanding the concept of “path to ground,” which electricity always tries to travel.

The Paths we Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

Summer doesn’t mean the end of the hockey season for Town of Oyster Bay youngsters, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, who announced that the indoor Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, will once again, provide the venue for the Summer House League Ice Hockey Program. “The Summer House League Ice Hockey program, which is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, is one of the Town’s most popular summer recreational programs,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “It provides youngsters ages seven to 12 with the opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of Town of Oyster Bay ice hockey coaches.” Registration will be held on Tuesday, April 30th and Wednesday, May 1st,

Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500. Michael Budd enjoyed his summer camp experience at Project CARE (Challenge Activities Ropes Experience) years ago and felt it was a defining time in his life. He says he enthusiastically shared his personal story with others and credited the camp with helping him develop confidence, selfesteem, communication and personal growth. Michael sought to use his upcoming Eagle Service Project to help others experience Project CARE. When Michael approached staff about his project and learned that many individuals who would truly benefit from the experience often did not participate because they did not have a pair of sneakers, he initiated his Eagle Scout Service Project, Sneakers for Success. During the past six months, Michael and his fellow scouts from Troop 776 raised valuable funds to support the goal of providing a new pair of sneakers for children, adolescents and adults. Earlier this month, he presented a check to fund Sneakers for Success in the amount of $820 to Patricia A. Porter, chief of operations at South Oaks Hospital. Ms. Porter thanked Michael for his efforts on behalf of a considerable number of individuals who will truly benefit from his Eagle Scout Project. Ms. Porter acknowledged Michael’s initiative and outstanding ability in demonstrating leadership, responsibility, project management and a sincere caring for others. “For Michael Budd to come back to our campus to see how he could help others is truly heartwarming. It was an honor for me to accept this gift and meet such a remarkable young man,” said Patricia Porter.

Nassau BOCES has been awarded a $50,350 grant as a part of $3.4 million in statewide grants New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently pledged to support early childhood to youth-aged programs in communities in need. The Parent-Child Home Program falls under grant guidelines which are intended to provide funding for children and youth in targeted highrisk neighborhoods. “The grant will fund an expansion of the nationally replicated and evidence-based, ParentChild Home Program, which Nassau BOCES has successfully administered in various districts since the 1970’s. It will afford the organization the ability to expand to include up to 50 more families, including five displaced by Superstorm Sandy. The program gives low-income and low-literacy families the resources and skills they need to support their young children’s learning and prepare them for successful school entry. “We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as a part of this grant,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES.” The Parent-Child Home Program stresses the
