A pair of Massapequa High School students have advanced to the next round of the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Matt McAuley and Hayley Tan can proudly call themselves National Merit finalists. The two students, who were announced as semifinalists in September, were among approximately 15,000 students nationwide to be named finalists. They moved one step closer to
potentially earning Merit Awards, which includes scholarship money. “It is the result of a lot of hard work paying off,” Matt said. “My parents are definitely proud of that.” Added Hayley, “It’s an honor and I’m very excited about it. I couldn’t have foreseen this.” The students are both still in the college selection process for the fall. Matt is looking to study computer science and Hayley wants
to pursue a degree in neuroscience. “Matt and Hayley are two hard-working students who have demonstrated academic excellence throughout their Massapequa school experience,” high school Principal Barbara Lowell said. “It is no surprise that they have qualified as National Merit Scholarship finalists. We know that they will do great things in their future.”
MTAC Town Hall Discussion You Can’t Pour From An Empty Cup
Parents and residents are invited to Massapequa Takes Action Coalition’s (MTAC) VIRTUAL Town Hall discussion on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. regarding what matters most in protecting our youth’s mental health. According to The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Protecting Youth Mental Health, mental health challenges in children, adolescents, and young adults are real and widespread. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges were the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people, with up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 in the U.S. having a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. Since the pandemic began, rates of psychological distress among young people, including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders, have increased.
MTAC’s Virtual Town Hall discussion, led by Kathleen Coletta, LCSW-R, looks to identify the keys to developing and maintaining optimum mental health for both parents and children with a focus on understanding the strong connection of parental mental health to our children’s mental health. Kathleen Coletta is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with YES Community Counseling Center having over fourteen years clinical experience working with individuals, families and groups. Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach
program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

We held two Ribbon Cutting ceremonies in March - one for Vida Restaurant in Massapequa Park in the Southgate Shopping Center, and one for Sage N Selenite Holistic Spa and Boutique in Massapequa on Merrick Road. We welcome both businesses to the Chamber and look forward to their participation in our programs and General Meetings.
Our April luncheon meeting will be held on April 28th at the Corner Galley Restaurant, and it will begin at 12:00 Noon. Rusty and Gerry always do a great job as our hosts. Special Guest Speaker for this meeting is Pete Fasulo from Sandler Training, and he will be speaking on professional presentations and time factors of such for your business meetings. Thanks to Rob Zabbia for setting up this speaker. We look forward to seeing all at this April luncheon. Our Nominating Committee, headed by Past President Patty Orzano, will present the proposed slate of nominees for the 2022 – 2023 Chamber administration at the April meeting. Please attend and see who the committee has proposed to run the Chamber for the next fiscal year. My thanks to that committee for putting together the proposed slate for the next Executive Board and Board of Directors.

Massapequa Appoints Next Town Crews Demolish Abandoned School Leader Dr. William Brennan Squatter Zombie Home

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with local neighbors and the Town’s Highway crew to commence the demolition of a long-dilapidated zombie home on Alhambra Road in Massapequa. This longtime eyesore was recently court-granted for demolition following multiple complaints from local neighbors. “This property has been inspected by our workforce several times, with multiple violations cited for lack of maintenance,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Town personnel repeatedly found deplorable conditions as this property showed clear signs of neglect. Unfortunately, the property owner did not fulfil any opportunities to clean it up
but fortunately, our Quality of Life Taskforce stepped in to help our residents.” Town inspections discovered a variety of code violations, including overgrown vegetation, deterioration or even lack of walls, debris strewn throughout both indoors and outside, damaged or missing ceilings, and overall deterioration. While the condition of the property worsened over time, the Town continued all efforts to keep the property safe to the surrounding neighborhood while pursuing legal action. “The great success of our Task Force really speaks for itself, as we’ve now successfully demolished more than two dozen homes since its inception,”
Supervisor Saladino added. “Through the diligence of our Town team – our building and legal professionals – we were successful in receiving the court’s go-ahead to proceed with demolition of this property.” The Town Code Enforcement Bureau of the Department of Planning and Development is charged with the enforcement of all codes, rules and regulations pertaining to zoning, housing and public safety. It is expressly designed to handle requests of citizens regarding possible violations. Following an extensive search, the Massapequa School District Board of Education has appointed its next educational leader. During the March 3rd Board meeting, veteran educator Dr. William Brennan was appointed Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2022. With more than 22 years of educational experience, including 10 as a Central Office administrator, Dr. Brennan joins Massapequa from the Farmingdale School District, where he currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Organizational Development. Through his years as an educator, he has served as a science teacher, professional developer, athletic coach, district administrator, leadership coach and adjunct professor. “We are very excited to welcome Dr. Brennan to our school district,” Board President Kerry Wachter said. “Dr. Brennan is a leader of leaders. He understands and shares the values of Massapequa, is an experienced educator and is respected among his colleagues. Most importantly, he is a relationship builder who will utilize the talents of our staff to achieve districtwide shared goals. We look forward to working with him to establish a vision for Massapequa’s future.” During his time in Farmingdale, Dr. Brennan has achieved innumerable accomplishments, including leading the district through a comprehensive strategic planning process, adding many new and innovative course offerings, expanding opportunities for students to pursue Advanced Placement and college-level courses, and creating systems for realtime access to academic and social-emotional ZOMBIE HOME DEMOLISHED - A long-standing zombie home in the Massapequa learning support. He engaged K-12 students in a design thinking approach to capital improvements and invited them to share their ideas on the design of new spaces. He has also led several initiatives that resulted in more opportunities for students to pursue their academic and career-learning interests such as new enrichment programs, secondary elective classes and an innovative student support learning lab. Dr. Brennan has also led Farmingdale through a transformation around school safety and security across all buildings, chaired the Legislative Action Committee, and improved internal and external communications. “I am thankful to the Board for the opportunity to lead Massapequa and continue the tradition of achievement,” Dr. Brennan said. “I believe that meaningful change only happens when you
first connect to people’s hearts, and that begins with building strong relationships, empathetic listening and compassion. I look forward to being a hands-on and visible member of the school community.” Dr. Brennan received his Doctor of Education from Fordham University, his Master of Science from Long Island University and his Bachelor of Science from Marist College. He has garnered numerous professional awards and recognitions, published several articles in educational publications, presented on various educational topics nationwide and served on several professional organizations. He resides in Bay Shore with his wife and three children. As part of the search, the Board of Education engaged the services of District Wise Consulting, took feedback from all constituent groups, held community forums and utilized a community survey to narrow its search from 30 applicants.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, announce the performer line-up for the much-anticipated 18th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, taking place on Saturday, May 28, 2022 and Sunday, May 29, 2022, from 10 AM – 3 PM. Returning for their 9th headlining performance, with two native New Yorkers on the jet team, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels return to Long Island following the cancellation of their last scheduled performance in 2020, due to Covid. Military performers joining the Blue Angels are the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, which will be making their 16th appearance at the Bethpage Air Show; the Air Combat Command
F-22 Raptor; the U.S. Navy F-35C Tac Demonstration Team; the U.S. Coast Guard; and the 106th Rescue Wing NY Air National Guard HC - 130 / HH 60 Demonstration Team. Civilian performers include the world-famous Skytypers and their flight squadron of five vintage WWII aircraft; Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; Jessy Panzer, a highly recognized female aerobatic pilot making her second Bethpage Air Show appearance; the American Air Power Museum Warbirds; Long Island’s own David Windmiller; and the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams, who will fly several of their 22 college-owned aircraft. “This year’s highly anticipated show is going to be spectacular! Town Seeks Counselors For Summer Recreation Program Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town is seeking counselors for its 2022 Summer Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference. “This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume. Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while having fun, making
memories, and making a difference in the lives of others,” said Supervisor Saladino. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning July 5th through August 12th. Touching on Jewish historic roots in Ukraine, he focused on the JDC’s current emergency response to the humanitarian catastrophe, often coordinating with other Jewish organizations. Beginning in 1914 the JDC was created to save Jews’ lives globally and build Jewish life. Even before World War II the JDC created a strong infrastructure in Ukraine and surrounding countries specifically to provide humanitarian assistance to the Jewish people and Jewish institutions. JDC worked clandestinely during the Soviet period and after the fall of the Soviet Union. They created a vast infrastructure providing the coordination and logistics necessary to accomplish the task of

Long Island’s Largest Car Show On April 30th At Tobay Beach Hundreds of Vehicles to Participate, Trophy Presentation, Free Concert & Free Admission
Long Island’s premier car show experience will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11am to 4pm at TOBAY Beach (rain date May 1st). The Supervisor’s TOBAY Beach Classic will be cosponsored by Car Show Long Island and will feature hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles,
and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations. The event is free for spectators. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Whether you’re a proud classic car owner or you want to see the best cars in the region,

Town Unveils ‘Farm To Fairway’ Initiative, Harvests Largest North Shore Kelp Grow Out Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently harvested the last of the Town’s sugar kelp, grown in local waterways to ultimately be dried, composted and used to treat landscaping at the Town’s golf course and other Town parks facilities. Through initial kelp operations put in place in cooperation with Adelphi, SUNY Stony Brook, and Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Town now grows over 3,000 feet of kelp – the equivalent of 10 football fields - in Harry Tappen Marina, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park Marina, TOBAY Beach Marina, Oyster Bay Harbor
and Cold Spring Harbor Conservation Management Areas. Supervisor Saladino stated, “In continuing our commitment to the environment, this new Farm to Fairway initiative provides dual benefits as Kelp significantly reduces nitrogen in our waterways helping to improve water quality, and decreases our dependency on chemical fertilizers on land. As strange as it may seem, kelp is proven to be incredibly successful as a natural fertilizer as it is 100% organic, dense in nutrients, and does not net an increase in nitrogen through storm water runoff pollution. When applied
to fairways specifically, it helps to increase root growth, improve appearance, promote seed development and enhances natural resistance of the fairways to stresses such as disease, drought, and insect pressures.” Sugar Kelp is a large brown seaweed that naturally seizes carbon from its environment as it grows. Kelp is grown in the winter months and is harvested in the spring before waterways are in use by boaters and water sports enthusiasts. Kelp helps to improve the balance of the ecosystem in the waters. “The growing of kelp has become an emerging trend
in environmentally-sound initiatives, as it produces many positive benefits for the ecosystem of our beautiful waterways,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Kelp benefits water quality through the extraction of nitrogen and carbon, which in high levels contributes to the growth of harmful algal blooms which can have detrimental effects on marine life and water quality.” For more information regarding this program and other environmental initiatives, visit www. oysterbaytown.com or call the Department of Environmental Resources at (516) 677-5943.
