Planning for the show has already begun and with two jet teams performing, two native New Yorkers on the Blue Angels’ team, and a host of other noted pilots on board, this year’s show is going to be spectacular!” “Bethpage is very proud to be a part of this special air show that has grown to become one of the most beloved air shows in the country,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “The addition of the Golden Knights, the Royal Canadian Snowbirds, and the F-22 Raptor, leading up to the Blues as the headliner, will make a great show for the fans this year.” It was also announced that the United States Air Force

Thunderbirds will return as headliners for the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Sunday, May 27, 2023 and Monday, May 28, 2023. This year’s Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach will be the U.S. Navy Blue Angel’s 9th appearance as headliners at the show. Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Additional 2022 performers will be announced shortly.

The Peace Corps Is Recruiting Volunteers From Diverse Backgrounds

(StatePoint) The Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans. “As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps. “We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential.” If you’re interested in Peace Corps service, here’s what to know. New Challenges While Peace Corps service is demanding for every volunteer, being from a diverse ethnic background can introduce additional challenges, according to those who have served.

“I had to deal with people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my

volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola have announced that the Town will begin accepting applications for the 2022 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents. “My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program received in its first year by our incredible residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and we look forward to further recognizing our

veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.” Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November 2022. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones.

Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2022 season. Applications must be received by March 11, 2022. Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. I certainly hope that all had a great Christmas and Hanukkah season. The year 2022 seems to be starting off the way 2021 did - with this Omicron variant getting us all down and feeling that things may never get better. One thing that I ask of all our members is to please exercise extreme caution and care when gathering with people. Stay safe and healthy, as we all want to hear that the ones that we care about are in good stead as we get through this again.

Our Christmas and Hanukkah Party at Zona was great. Our Meeting Planning Committee, Robin Hepworth and Karen Gawrych, did a splendid job setting this up. We also celebrated my birthday that night with a delicious cake at the party. It was great to see all in attendance that evening. Our stalwarts Patty Orzano, Phyllis Doria, Robert R. Barrett, and Karen Gawrych outdid themselves with our Food Drive and Toys for Tots program again this year. They are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to these projects through the years. At this time, I must give special congratulations to Past President Denis Monette on his appointment as the Commissioner of the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management. This is well-deserved, and he will do a great job. Kudos also to Past President Gary Slavin as he becomes the President of his Statewide Insurance Group. I am most proud of both of these men for these accomplishments. This is what makes our Chamber…Massapequa Strong! We just held our January Board Meeting, and I announced that Past President Patty Orzano will be chairing the Nominating Committee. We will elect the rest of the committee at the March Board Meeting, so they will have a month to put a list of nominees together. A slate will then be presented at the April General Meeting for all to consider for the next administration of the Chamber. I am also glad to tell all that the Board increased the scholarships this year from $250.00 to $400.00 for each award given. More will come out about that as we begin the process. The committee will be chaired by 2nd Vice President Karen Gawrych. The January Luncheon is scheduled for Mario’s on Broadway on Thursday, January 27th. Watch your e-mails for the details on the luncheon. At the February meeting, we will honor Volunteer Firefighters from Massapequa and North Massapequa - more details will be coming on this as well. Finally, I ask all to keep our loved ones in their prayers during this difficult time. We have had some close to our Chamber that need prayers, like my good pal Sal Polito’s wife Marie, and Denis Monette’s wife, Carol - that’s what we are all about, caring for each other. Please pray that this pandemic ends soon and we can all get back to our own normal, not the new normal. The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters.
