In Their Hands: Seaford Students Run The Show For A Day
Students took the reins for a day at a Seaford High School on Feb. 11, a highly anticipated annual event that gives them a behind-thescenes look at education.
The Student Takeover is a fundraiser hosted by student government, and interested participants can by raffle tickets for the chance to be paired up with an administrator or teacher of their choice.
This year’s administrative team was senior Kayla Hoehn, freshman Layla Raposo and sophomore Sarah Denimark, who spent the day shadowing Principal Nicole Schnabel, Assistant Principal Alex Mantay and Assistant Principal Melanie Judson, respectively. Their tasks included delivering recognition letters to teachers, assisting with a project to install ADA-compliant signs around the building,
making announcements, reviewing the student handbook and delivering supplies. They also voted on designs for the newlyrenovated underclassmen cafeteria to enhance Seaford pride.
Kayla said it was thrilling to spend the day with Ms. Schnabel and learning how the school operates.
“I always see how hard she works and her dedication to the school,” Kayla said, “so I wanted to see what it looks like behind the scenes.”
There were 29 students shadowing administrators and teachers. In the classrooms, the winning students dressed professionally as they helped teach lessons, lead discussions and review student work.
Sophomore Brandon Bombardier was paired with his chemistry teacher, Lilly Alaimo. Even when she was on
hall duty, Brandon sat alongside her to get the full experience, and they graded papers together.
“She’s a great teacher and I thought it would be fun to teach her class,” he said.
Ms. Schnabel noted that every staff member at Seaford High School has an important role, and the takeover is an impactful way for students to see the many responsibilities of administrators, teachers and support staff. All of those efforts, she added, are about giving students the best possible school experience.
“It’s exciting for students to see that there’s a lot of different tasks involved in running a school,” she said. “There’s a lot of decisionmaking that goes on, and a lot of nitty-gritty. We all contribute to making Seaford High School a success.”
Senator Steve Rhoads Announces $3,000 Scholarships
New York State Senator Steve Rhoads today announced that the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators is now accepting applications for two $3,000 scholarships available to residents of the 5th Senate District. The scholarships are open to current college students and high school seniors who plan to attend college.
Eligible students may apply online by visiting: https://www.nyiacsl.org/ apply-for-scholarship-form The application deadline is March 16th.
Senator Rhoads has a strong track record of scholarship recipients from the 5th Senate District. In 2024, one local student earned the scholarship, followed by two students selected in 2025—each beating out applicants from across New York State. Senator Rhoads hopes to see another deserving student from the district
recognized this year.
“Students from the 5th Senate District have repeatedly distinguished themselves in a highly competitive, statewide selection process,” said Senator Rhoads. “These scholarships are an investment in the next generation of leaders right here in our community.
Our students are working hard, giving back, and setting ambitious goals for themselves, and at a time when the cost of higher education continues to climb, this support can make a real difference— easing financial pressure and helping them stay focused on their futures.
I strongly encourage all eligible students to apply.”
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
• A grade point average of 85 or higher
• Active involvement in community service and extracurricular activities
• Demonstrated financial need
• For athletic scholarships, applicants must also be involved in an organized sport(s)
The winners of the scholarships will be announced in April and will be contacted directly. Winners will be invited to Albany in May to receive their award at the ItalianAmerican Day Celebration.
The New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators is a bipartisan organization of state Assembly and Senate members who actively promote and celebrate the state’s Italian
American community. Scholarship students can check their residency in the 5th Senate District by using this link: https:// www.nysenate.gov/findmy-senator

The Spring Equinox
Grief And Loss Peer-Led Support Group
First Thursday Of Every Month, 6:30 P.M. To 7:30 P.M.
There’s much to celebrate on the Spring Equinox, which is also referred to as the “Vernal Equinox” or the “March Equinox” and marks the official beginning of spring, a season many people associate with rejuvenation and longer hours of daylight. One unusual aspect of the equinoxes (the Autumnal Equinox in September ushers in the beginning of fall) is these days feature the fastest sunsets and sunrises of the year. According to Earthsky.org, this phenomenon occurs because the sun rises due east and sets due west on the equinoxes, which means the setting sun hits the horizon at its steepest possible angle. That steep angle leads to a very short sunrise and sunset on the equinoxes. Traditionally, we celebrate the first day of spring on March 21, but astronomers and calendar manufacturers alike now say that the spring season starts on March 20 in all time zones in North America.
Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT), along with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Families in Support of Treatment (FIST), Family & Children’s Association, (FCA) and Human Understanding and Growth Services (HUGS) are joining
together to offer a free grief and loss peer-led support group. The group will meet at the East End THRIVE location, at 680 Elton Street, Riverhead, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. The focus of the support group will be to explore ways to find comfort, share support and begin
healing for those who have lost a loved one.
“Losing a loved one can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone,” said Paulette Phililppe, founder of Gabriel’s Giving Tree.

Supervisor Ferretti And Town Board Enact Historic Property Tax Relief For Seriously Disabled Veterans
Supervisor John Ferretti and the Hempstead Town Board voted unanimously to adopt a local law that will waive Town property taxes for veterans with 100 percent service-connected disabilities. This decision comes on the heels of an updated New York State law that permits local municipalities the option to provide this property tax relief.
“The Town of Hempstead is proud to adopt this local law to provide full Town property tax relief for seriously disabled veterans in America’s largest township,” said Supervisor Ferretti. “Hempstead Town is home to many men and women who have served our great nation, and this enhanced property tax exemption is one small way that we can express our gratitude and appreciation for our
community’s most patriotic residents. We strongly urge local qualifying veterans to apply for an exemption today.”
The updated veteran’s exemption applies only to veterans with 100 percent service-connected disabilities and are deemed “unemployable,” which must be certified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The property must be the veteran’s primary residence. The property tax relief covers 100 percent of the Town of Hempstead portion of the property tax bill, but does not automatically apply to school, county, or special district taxes – over which the Town has no jurisdiction. Veterans who have questions about this newly established veteran’s property tax waiver can call the Town of Hempstead Tax Office at (516) 538-1500. Vets can also avail themselves of the guidance and services provided by the Town of Hempstead Department of Veterans Services by calling (516) 812-3506.
“As a lifelong resident of Levittown, a community originally built for our nation’s veterans, I have always felt a deep sense of pride and admiration for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces,” concluded Supervisor Ferretti. “While we are deeply saddened that any servicemember ever returns home with permanent, life-altering injuries, it is our sincere hope that this veteran’s property tax waiver will provide significant financial relief to patriots who served our great nation.”
Daylight Saving Time Begins March 8
Residents are reminded that Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Clocks should be set one hour ahead before going to bed on Saturday night, as the change takes effect at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The start of Daylight Saving Time brings longer daylight hours in the evening, providing more
opportunities for outdoor activities and community events. While many electronic devices update automatically, residents are encouraged to manually adjust clocks on appliances, vehicles, and other nondigital devices. Officials also remind the public to use the time change as an opportunity
to check household safety measures, including testing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms and replacing batteries as needed.
Daylight Saving Time will remain in effect until Sunday, November 1, 2026, when clocks will be set back one hour.

Counting to 100 is a goal for kindergartners and youngsters at Seaford Harbor Elementary School were able to show off their mathematical smarts during a milestone day. Feb. 11 marked the 100th day of school this year and it was filled with celebrations.
From the very first day of kindergarten until graduation, they will come
to school more than 2,300 times. Hitting the tripledigit mark of that 13-year journey was a big deal. Kindergartners dressed up as if they were 100 years old, donning glasses, wigs, dresses and suspenders and paraded through the school.
Students from grades 1-5 lined the hallways to cheer and give high-fives.

students colored 100-day posters and make crowns declaring themselves 100 days smarter. There were also math centers in which kindergartners stacked 100 cups, built with 100 blocks and make gumball machines with 100 colorful stamps. Students also wrote what they would do with $100 and projected what their lives would be like at 100.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A recent study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.
