Movie-turned-musical
“Mean Girls” is coming to the Massapequa High School stage, with evening performances on March 6 and 7.
The 2004 movie centers on a girl who moves from homeschooling in Africa to a suburban American high school and has to adapt to teenage social life. Senior Allison Hassell plays the lead
role of Cady.
“It’s a really good way to celebrate the end of high school with a show that’s about high school,” Allison said. “Figuring out who they want to be is a lesson people take with them as they leave high school.”
Other leads among the cast of 75 are sophomore Michael Colberg as Damian, junior Juliana Ansaldi as
Regina, junior Sophia Rose Alfieri as Gretchen, senior Lauren Borenstein as Karen, junior Nick Bernstein as Aaron, sophomore Hunter Lewner as Kevin, junior Alex Green as Mr. Duvall and senior Giavanna Pizzo as Miss Norbury. Musical numbers include “Fearless,” “Meet the Plastics” and “Where Do You Belong?”

and crew director Jason Cavanaugh.
“This is a fun, popular show that we’ve been looking forward to doing for a long time,” Ms. Pearsall said. “I have the right group of students that are perfect for the roles.”
Show times are Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in Massapequa High School’s Baldwin Auditorium. Tickets are $15

Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at
a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

Ninth grade Science Research students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are gaining real-world experience through a multi-year environmental study. Students made their second visit of the school year to the Dolan DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
The project began in October with students collecting organism samples from a stream at the Massapequa Preserve as part of an ongoing biodiversity study. After extracting and amplifying DNA during an earlier visit, students analyzed their genetic data during the February trip, comparing results to known
organisms using GenBank, a National Institutes of Health genetic database.
Science Research teacher August Eberling said the long-term data collection allows students to track changes in the stream’s ecosystem, including the possible emergence of new or invasive species. He noted that students are performing

work typically done at the college or post-graduate level and could potentially earn recognition on a published research paper if a significant discovery is made.
Curriculum associate for science 6–12 Daniel Mezzafonte added that Massapequa students have participated in the Preserve’s
“Day in the Life” stream study for more than 15 years, with ninth graders joining the DNA Barcoding initiative four years ago.
Students praised the hands-on nature of the project and the opportunity to work in a professional laboratory. Several expressed interest in pursuing science or medical careers.
