Amityville Kiwanis Club Spring Social Celebrates Community And Unveils New Village Logo

The Amityville Kiwanis Club hosted its annual Spring Social this weekend at the Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club, welcomaing residents for a relaxing afternoon by the water.

The event also marked the unveiling of a new Village logo as part of a branding and wayfinding project through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, with funding awarded by the New York State Department of State. It was a festive celebration of the Friendly Bay Village and the Kiwanis Club’s continued commitment to community service.

BUDGET VOTE AND TRUSTEE ELECTION

APRIL 14, 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a Special Meeting of the qualified voters of the Amityville Union Free School District (the “District”), Town of Babylon, Suffolk County and Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York will be held at the Amityville Public Library, 19 John St., Amityville, New York 11701 (the “Library”) on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, between the hours of 10:00am and 9:00pm, for the purpose of voting on the following items:

1) To adopt the annual budget of the Amityville Public Library for the fiscal year 2026-2027, and to authorize the requisite portion thereof to be raised by taxation upon the taxable property of the District; and

2) The election of two (2) members of the Board of Trustees, consisting of: (i) one (1) trustee to serve a five-year term commencing July 1, 2026 and expiring June 30, 2031; and (ii) one (1) trustee to serve a one-year term commencing July 1, 2026 and expiring June 30, 2027. The candidate receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected to the five-year term, and

the candidate receiving the second highest number of votes shall be elected to the one-year term.

NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that candidates for the office of Trustee of the Library Board of Trustees shall be nominated by petition. Petitions must be filed with the School District Clerk (address above), between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm no later than Monday, March 16, 2026. Forms of petition may be obtained from the School District Clerk. Each petition must be directed to the School District Clerk; must state the name and address of the candidate; must be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District and list each signer’s address.

The Spring Equinox

There’s much to celebrate on the Spring Equinox, which is also referred to as the “Vernal Equinox” or the “March Equinox” and marks the official beginning of spring, a season many people associate with rejuvenation and longer hours of daylight. One unusual aspect of the equinoxes (the Autumnal Equinox in September ushers in the beginning of fall) is these days feature the fastest sunsets and sunrises of the year. According to Earthsky.org, this phenomenon occurs because the sun rises due east and sets due west on the equinoxes, which means the setting sun hits the horizon at its steepest possible angle. That steep angle leads to a very short sunrise and sunset on the equinoxes. Traditionally, we celebrate the first day of spring on March 21, but astronomers and calendar manufacturers alike now say that the spring season starts on March 20 in all time zones in North America.

Copiague Students Share Their Voice At Local Forum

Four students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School were selected to participate in the annual Long Island Regional Student Forum on Feb. 27 at St. Joseph’s University. The event was organized by the Eastern Suffolk and Western Suffolk BOCES superintendents. Juniors Melanie Robertson and Skya Cham were selected as participants, while senior Damaris Bonilla, who attended the forum last year, was trained as a student facilitator. In addition, Copiague School District’s

ex-officio student board member Olivia Tysko joined other ex-officio members from school districts across Long Island.

During the forum, students expressed their views on pivotal issues concerning mental health, academic pressures, career planning and the school environment. Their findings were shared with state and local leaders. The students were accompanied by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School social studies teacher David Leboff, who was also trained as an adult facilitator.
