Scarola resides in Greenlawn with his wife Caitlin and their children Anna & Abby. He also has two rescue dogs named Douglas and Gracie. In his free time, he enjoys spending time outdoors, cooking, going to the movies and spending time with his family & friends. “I am grateful to join the administrative team in Lindenhurst,” said Scarola. “I have already observed the warmth and welcoming kindness of the Lindenhurst school community, staff and students. I have been impressed by the dedication and talent of the CTE teachers I support and the students we serve.” The district is honored to welcome Tom Scarola and is confident that he will be successful in his new role.

The Charity of the Month for November is
Project 9 Line www.project9line.org Project 9 Line is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue, an Army combat veteran. Their focus is to bridge T the communication JEC gap between PRO veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art. Studies show that Long Island has the second largest population of Veterans in the United States, second only to San Diego, California; Suffolk County has approximately 85,000 veterans and Nassau County has approximately 75,000 veterans. Also, statistics show that twenty two veterans decide to take their own life every day. Many of our veterans return home from performing the ultimate duty of serving our country only to face hardship, depression and substance abuse. Through their extensive resources and hands on team, Project 9 Line wants to maximize the potential of each and every veteran. This non-profit offers veterans various weekly classes. Whether a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for them! Each class is held at their headquarters at 25 Union Ave, Islip, NY 11751. The marching band is under the direction of Kevin Pike (middle). “The entire Lindenhurst Community has much to be proud of in this special group of hard-working, dedicated students,” said Mr. Pike.“We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the LHS Band Director Kevin Pike for the band’s rousing performance, in front of the hometown Lindenhurst Bulldog crowd,” said Trustee Pichichero.

Originating in 1976 when then Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, declared the first week of November Adoption Week in the state, it was then formally recognized in 1984 when President Gerald Ford signed a proclamation declaring it National Adoption Week. To further increase adoption awareness, in 1995 President Bill Clinton expanded the week to the full month of November, and beginning in 2000, the Saturday before Thanksgiving was declared National Adoption Day. Today, it’s estimated that seven million Americans are adoptees and that one hundred million have direct experience with adoption in their immediate family either having adopted or placed a child for adoption or being an adoptee themselves. While the purpose of National Adoption Month and National Adoption Day is to draw attention to the importance of all adoption-related issues, 2021’s focus is on the critical issues surrounding the adoption of children in foster care. Numbers vary by source, but it’s generally agreed that there are over 400,000 children currently in foster care in the United States (as of 2019, 16,000 of them were in New York

The Village of Lindenhurst is hoping to significantly reduce flooding on South 8th Street through a new water control system that pumps stormwater back into the canal. If successful, this “proof of concept” project can be replicated on other Village streets south of Montauk.
Trustee Patrick Pichichero said, “This new technology will prevent most street flooding which plagues South 8th Street during an abnormal high tide or in heavy rains. The pump, along with check valves that fit into drainage pipes, will prevent water from backing up and flooding streets. The
pump is designed to move as much as 11,000 gallons of water per minute.” Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle added, “The valves and water pump will mitigate substantially most of the nuisance flooding that South 8th Street and some of our low-lying areas are predominantly subject to.”

Students Meet ‘What Should Danny Do?’ Authors Alleghany Avenue Elementary School students in grades K-3 recently had the opportunity listen to and speak with authors Ganit and Adir Levy, who wrote the popular, “What Should Danny Do?” and “What Should Darla Do?” books.
Throughout the Zoom visit, the authors not only read aloud one of the books, but also explored the writing process with students, answered any questions they had and shared the important messages about the choices people make.
“The same way you made choices for Danny, you can make them for yourselves,” said Adir. “In life you have choices, and when you make good choices, you feel empowered. When you feel empowered to make good choices, it will lead to having a good life.”

Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all
brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook
State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain
damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC
and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

State Parks Announces Hunting Schedules For 2021/2022 The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that hunting will be permitted within specific areas of select Long Island State Parks for the upcoming hunting season. Hunting regulations in state parks are developed in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which establishes hunting seasons throughout the state. In addition to statewide hunting rules, special restrictions are in effect in state parks to protect visitors and to address wildlife management goals for each park. Hunters are advised to check with the state park regional office and with the local DEC wildlife management office for specific information. See the website at www.dec.ny.gov. All hunters must have a valid New York State hunting license and, to hunt waterfowl, must also be registered in the Harvest Information Program (https://www.dec.ny.gov/ permits/6405.html) and have a federal migratory bird hunting stamp (“duck stamp”). Reports of rabies in deer have been rare, but hunters and other park users should be alert to the possibility of encountering a rabid raccoon, fox or skunk. To reduce the
risk of exposure, follow these guidelines: • Do not approach wildlife that acts abnormally. • Do not touch any animal found dead for unknown reasons. Hunters are advised to wear gloves and eye protection to avoid coming in contact with tissues or bodily fluids that may carry infectious disease. To obtain a copy of the rules and regulations for hunting big and small game, contact any DEC office, including the Regional Wildlife office at SUNY Stony Brook, 50 Circle Road, Stony Brook, NY 117903409, (631) 444-0310.
