An Open Letter to the Lindenhurst Educational Community Dear Parents of the Lindenhurst Community, Starting on Wednesday, March 25, New York State students from grades 3-8 will once again be asked to participate in the English and Math assessments. We are writing to let you know that you, as the parent of a third through eighth grader, have a choice about whether or not your child will take these tests. The “Opt Out” movement has been at the forefront of the fight to save Public Education. There are politicians whose agenda is to privatize education. We, as parents, teachers and members of a public school learning community, will not stand idly by while these threats persist. The “Opt Out” movement has been instrumental in educating and unifying parents, school officials and educational communities alike. The power of showing politicians that the parents have the power when it comes to public education has helped enact positive change for our students throughout our state. ______ the 2020 New York State grade 3-8 math assessment ______ any stand alone New York State field testing in the 2019/20 school year (grades 3-12) ______ any local/benchmark assessment used in the New York State teacher evaluation system administered in the fall, winter, and spring (may include STAR, AIMSweb, I-Ready, Achieve3000, MAP/NWEA, SLO’s) in the 2019/20 school year (grades k-12) (excluding spring 2020 middle school local assessments being used as a final grade)* ______ the 2020 grade 4 New York State science assessment ______ the 2020 grade 8 New York State science assessment ______ any “formal” practice test (timed or staged to imitate the actual testing day) or alternative CC assessments given only to test refusal students on the day of testing. Our refusal should in no way reflect on the teachers, administration, or school board. This was not an easy decision for us, but we feel that we have no other choice. We simply see these tests as harmful, expensive, and a waste of time and valuable resources. We refuse to allow any data to be used for purposes other than the individual teacher’s own formative or cumulative assessment. We are opposed to assessments whose data is used to determine school ranking, teacher effectiveness, or any other purpose other than for the individual classroom teacher’s own use to improve his or her instruction. We believe in and trust our highly qualified and dedicated teachers and administrators. We believe in the high quality of teaching and learning that occur in our child’s school. We hope our efforts will be understood in the context in which they are intended: to support the quality of instruction promoted by the school, and to advocate for what is best for all children. Our schools will not suffer when these tests are finally gone, they will flourish. We do apologize in advance for the inconvenience or scrutiny that this decision may cause the administration, the school, and staff. Showing Off Their Roots During Black History Celebration This year’s theme for the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Black History Month celebration on Feb. 27 was “Strong Roots, Amazing Achievement.” The event showcased the many talents of the student body and featured performances by the middle school and high school step teams as well as musical selections by the Madrigal Choir and jazz band. The celebration was hosted by Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Sevon Brown, Lanyah Ford and Jonah Ramos, who were introduced to the audience

with “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The Madrigal Choir presented three musical selections, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “Cameroon Processional” and “Oh Happy Day” with solos by Sevon Brown and Sydney Forbes. The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and the Copiague Middle School step teams themed their performance “Step Up and Vote.” The jazz bands played two selections, “Low Ride” and “What Is Hip.” “Young Hearts” was performed by Zyliek Jackson, Bianca Joseph and Bridgette

Celebrating The Uniqueness Of The Equinox The first day of spring is widely associated with a spirit of rejuvenation. But flowering plants and warming temperatures are not the only reasons to celebrate the arrival of the spring equinox. According to the National Weather Service, the spring equinox, together with the autumnal equinox, is one of only two times of the year when

Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun. This results in a nearequal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. The NWS notes that the nearly equal hours of day and night results from a refraction of sunlight, or a bending of the light’s rays that causes the sun to appear above the horizon, even though its actual position is below the
