The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! Much about trips to the grocery store has changed since many adults were children. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store. Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves. Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying. Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices.

Third grade students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District are required to learn about the dictionary and how to best use this literary tool. As part of their literacy project, the Lindenhurst

Rotary Club purchased and donated a dictionary to each third grader. Rotarians visited the district’s elementary schools, shared with the students some of the charitable work done by the organization, discussed dictionary skills

and presented each student with a dictionary to keep. The students graciously accepted the gifts and spent the remainder of the time poring over their new books and making new discoveries.

It was an indoor snow day for the first graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District when they celebrated the white weather with plenty of hands-on lessons. Dressed in their warmest pajamas, students started the day by reading snow-themed books and practicing their writing and math skills with snow-based activities. As

a science experiment, the students hypothesized about whether or not oil and water in a mason jar could mix together or stay separated. The resulting experiment, with a bit of added glitter, created a snowstorm in a jar. Using baking soda and hair conditioner, the students even made their own snow inside the classroom. Snow paint was created using flour, salt

and water, which results in a fluffy art creation. Before the students had a chance to snack on cheesy snowballs, they ended the day’s activities with an indoor snowball fight. Each student wrote a kind message on a piece of paper. They crumbled their papers, tossed them at each other and read aloud the positive messages at the end of the snowball fight.

PAINTING WATERCOLOR PICTURES - Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District hosted a pajama literacy night for students in kindergarten, first and second grade on Feb. 6. Deauville Gardens East teachers performed a readers theater of Deauville Gardens East social worker and author Lysa Mullady’s newest picture book “Red, Yellow, Blue.” The students then went back to their classroom and painted watercolor pictures in response to the book.
