Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! Registration of eligible Lindenhurst Union Free School District kindergarten students for the 20202021 school year will take place 9 through Feb. 13 at the McKenna Administration Building, 350 Daniel St., Lindenhurst. In accordance with established policy of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District, children must be 5 years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2020, to be enrolled in kindergarten for the upcoming year. If your child has received or is currently receiving preschool special education services, you will still need to register for kindergarten. Kindergarten registration packets are available at any elementary school in the district, the lobby of the McKenna Administration Building and available on the district website at www. lindenhurstschools.org. A DAY TO REMEMBER - When the Sisters of St. Dominic decided to close the Queen of the Rosary Academy in 1986, they began exploring possibilities for the use of the property. Their deliberations resulted in a new senior housing ministry. Hence, the sound of youthful voices that filled the academy hallways became the mature voices that fill the halls of Dominican Village. Basketball Coach Receives National Women In Sports Honor Copiague School District celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior varsity girls basketball coach Kia Wright at the team’s last home game on Jan. 29. Wright was a standout athlete during her time in the Copiague School District, earning a spot as one of the top scorers on Long Island by amassing 2,148 points in her high school career. She was an All-Long Island and AllState player who helped the Eagles win two Long Island titles and a state championship in 2003. Wright played at St.

John’s University, where she was a four-time Big East player and the only player in school history to score more than 1,500 points and more than 400 assists in a career. After graduating from St. Johns, she competed at the professional ranks for Puerto Rico and Croatia, and in 2015 was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Wright has been an assistant coach for the Adelphi Panthers and is currently in her third year as the junior varsity girls basketball head coach for Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

The temperatures are dropping by the day and with that comes snow, ice and other cold weather conditions. While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy

a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold
