PAWS OF WAR - Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only ofﬁcial animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get ﬁnancial support from public donations. YOUTH MEMBERS RECOGNIZED - On January 15th Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, Babylon Town Councilman Terry McSweeney and Lori-Ann Novello on behalf of the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, joined the 1st Pct Explorer’s meeting to recognize the youth members of this special organization. Under distinguished leadership of Officer Margiotta, the members achieved the President’s Silver Award for Community Service hours. Each participant received Certificates of Recognition issued by Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, the Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and the Board of Directors of Lindy Cares. The Explorers dedication of time and service contributed to the success of so many charitable events in the Town of Babylon communities throughout 2019. Students at Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently held a special assembly to kick off the student council run Pennies for Patients campaign, in association with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS campaign manager Meagan Modell spoke to students about the campaign and how they can be “superheroes” by fundraising for the

Harding Avenue Heroes Collect Pennies For Patients charity and its patients. She inspired the students by saying how their efforts, no matter how small, can make be impactful. Pennies for Patients is a science-based, service learning program that allows schools to work together as a class, grade and building to reach goals of fundraising. All monies raised will go to the LLS in support of research, patient support, patient education and advocacy.

is stationed in a remote area of Afghanistan, ﬁrst spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone.

A Trip Of A Lifetime On February 12th, 30 students from Richard Weeks’ German classes at Lindenhurst High School and Middle School along with 8 chaperones will be embarking on the trip of a lifetime to visit Germany and Austria. The trip has been in planning for almost two years. They will visit the city of Munich and its attractions, including the site of the 1972 Olympics and the BMW Museum as well as Marienplatz with its famous Hofbräu Haus. From there they will visit a German High School in SulzbachRosenberg and spend the morning learning about the school system in Germany. What a great opportunity for the students. They will then visit the

concentration camp in Dachau. A very difﬁcult place to visit but a part of history. Walt Disney’s Neuschwanstein Castle is the next stop and one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world. Not far from there are the Hallein Salt Mines. They will travel deep into the mountains where the border of Germany and Austria are crossed as they make their descent into the mountain. This is another breathtaking spot on the tour. Several hundred yards from the entrance to the salt mine is a Neolithic camp, 5000 years old, which is an eye opener for the students. Next they travel to Salzburg, Austria to visit the home of Mozart and explore where some of the scenes from the Sound of Music were made. They are

then on their way to Vienna, another beautiful city, where they will spend two days exploring, among other things, the famous Ring Street area and a Roman bath. They will also visit an interactive Music studio where many of the musically talented students will thrive showing off their talents learned at Lindenhurst HS . They will return home to Long Island on February 21st to rest up and share all of their stories. Students in grades 10-12 will be able to utilize many of the historical and language opportunities immediately in college level classes with Mr. Weeks. Students can earn 4 college credits from Stony Brook university in 10th and 11th grade as well as three in 12th grade for a total of 11.

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It begins the last Sunday in January, which in 2020 is January 26th, and runs through Saturday, February 1st. The theme for Catholic Schools Week is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.’ During Catholic Schools Week, schools across the Diocese, and across the country, mark the occasion with Masses and special entertainment and activities for the students, families, parishioners and members of their extended communities. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and the school’s contributions to our church, our communities, and our nation

How Is Catholic Schools Week Celebrated on Long Island? On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parents and parishioners, and to introduce new

families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the Sunday the 26th, but can be held early as St Patrick School in Huntington is doing on Thursday the 23rd. In addition to the Open House to welcome new visitors, Catholic Schools Week features a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools also offer additional open houses and opportunities for prospective new families to visit during the week as well. Catholic schools are unique in many significant ways, and Catholic Schools Week highlights many of those differences. First, Catholic education acknowledges the parents as the original teachers in each of our lives and celebrates the continued and ongoing involvement of parents in their child’s education, and with their child’s school. a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are sill conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. As we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives-not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in the moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

No Super Bowl Sunday Is Complete Without Chicken Wings Marinade 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 1⁄2 cup hot sauce 4 tablespoons Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) 4 tablespoons granulated garlic 4 tablespoons granulated onion Juice of 1/2 lemon Wings 8 large chicken wings 1⁄2 cup Virgil’s Dry Rub (see below) Sauce 10 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon cornstarch 4 tablespoons white vinegar 3⁄4 cup hot sauce 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1. To make the dip, combine 1 cup of the blue cheese, mayonnaise, buttermilk, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and salt in the bowl of a food Virgil’s Smoked processor and blend on Chicken Wings With low until smooth. Sprinkle liberally with the dry rub, coating the wings all over. 6. Position the wings on the grill away from the direct heat of the coals or burners, and add hickory to the smoker or hickory chips on the coals or gas burners. 7. Cook the wings for about 3 hours, flipping

every 30 minutes (their internal temperature should be about 165 F when cooked). 8. While the wings are cooking, cut the butter for the sauce into 1-inch cubes and refrigerate. Whisk the cornstarch into the white vinegar, in a small bowl. 9. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, bring the hot sauce to a simmer and whisk in the thickened vinegar. Return to a simmer, cook for 1 minute, and remove from the heat.

10. Add the cayenne and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Keep warm until serving. 11. Remove the wings from the smoker or grill and put half of them into a bowl, cover with the sauce, and toss. Repeat with the remaining wings and serve on a platter, with the blue cheese dip on the side. Virgil’s Dry Rub Makes 5 to 51⁄2 cups 21⁄2 cups sweet paprika 1 cup granulated sugar

1⁄2 cup Texas-style chili powder 1⁄2 cup minced onion 1⁄2 cup granulated garlic 1⁄4 c up dried parsley flakes 6 tablespoons kosher salt Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and whisk together until completely incorporated. Transfer to a covered bowl with a tight-fitting lid. Store in a cool, dry place.
