Suffolk County Awards United Way of Long Island $385,000 JumpSMART Grant

UNITED WAY OF LONG ISLAND AWARDED JUMPSMART GRANT - Suffolk County officials led by County Executive Steve Bellone present United Way of Long Island’s Theresa A. Regnante and Craig Fligstein a $385,OOO JumpSMART grant. Development Training Academy is being developed in conjunction with United Way of Long Island’s Net Zero Energy Building Campaign, an award-winning project that is setting a new standard in renewable energy for non-profit organizations across Long Island. Going Net Zero means the organization will save more than $70,000 in utility costs to be reinvested in

community programs. United Way is transforming its Deer Park headquarters, the renamed Entenmann Family Center for Hope, into the next generation of energy efficiency. With 576 PV solar modules, the facility will function as a “command center” for non-profit organizations across Long Island that are impacted by catastrophic events like 2012’s Super

Storm Sandy, allowing these vital organizations to continue serving the communities who rely on them when their own facilities are unavailable. In County Executive Bellone’s remarks he said, “United Way of Long Island is a constant presence in the community and one of the pillars of the community. Their Workforce Development Training Academy will

provide our residents with greater access to financial opportunities and workforce development possibilities.” “We are grateful to the Suffolk County Legislature for their support, and to Steve Bellone for his commitment and leadership to invest in workforce development,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO, United Way of Long Island. “These

NFPA Urges Extra Caution When Preparing Your Thanksgiving Feast The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) urges added caution when cooking on Thanksgiving Day, by far the leading day of the year for home cooking fires. In 2021, an estimated 1,160 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, reflecting a 297 percent increase over the daily average. “Thanksgiving is a hectic holiday with multiple dishes cooking and baking at the same time, along with lots of guests, entertaining, and other distractions that can make it easy to lose sight of what’s on the stove or in the oven,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

“With all these factors at play, it’s not surprising that the number of cooking fires spikes so dramatically.” Overall, cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires and injuries, and the second-leading cause of home fire deaths. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. “Keeping a close eye on what’s cooking and minimizing the likelihood of getting distracted are key steps people can take to ensure a festive, firefree holiday,” said Carli. Following are additional tips and recommendations from NFPA to help cook safely on Thanksgiving:

Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need

continuous attention. When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly. Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times,

particularly for foods that require longer cook times. Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area. Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source. Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If a small grease fire starts, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan, then turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident

the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Hot foods and liquids should be placed away from table and counter edges. In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers that use cooking oil, which can cause devastating burns. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends purchasing a fried turkey from a grocery store or restaurant or buying a fryer that does not use oil.

Holiday Tree Lighting Heralds Arrival Of The Lindenhurst Holiday Season

unday, December 3rd heralds the official start of the 2023 Holiday Season for Lindenhurst Village and the surrounding community when the Village of Lindenhurst, in partnership with several community organizations, hosts “Winter on Wellwood”. Figuring prominently among those organizations is the Lindenhurst Historical Society who will again be hosting the day’s culminating event- the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s 75th Annual Tree Lighting. As the Lindenhurst Fire Department’s Annual Christmas Parade concludes with Santa Claus’ arrival, Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger along with Lindenhurst Historical Society President Krista Jo Merget and Society Board members will take the stage and commence with the day’s crowning event; the Society’s 75th Annual Tree Lighting. Together, they will welcome to the stage this year’s honorary tree lighter, no other than Town of Babylon Historian Mary Cascone. For the past 75 years, Lindenhurst Historical Society TreeLighters have been selected in appreciation of their tireless efforts on behalf of the Lindenhurst Historical Society. Town Historian Cascone is no exception. The former Lindenhurst resident has repeatedly demonstrated her support of the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s mission, generously committing her time and talent to several Historical Society ventures. Her projects for the Town of Babylon have included seven local history books, most notably “From Breslau to Lindenhurst 1870-1923”, the definitive resource on Lindenhurst’s history, co –written with Lindenhurst Village Historian Anna Jaeger. The writing team of Cascone and Jaeger are currently working on their next publication, the second in their series which will continue to narrate Lindenhurst's history, this time from 1924 to the present. An accomplished archivist, Mary’s collaboration with the Lindenhurst Historical Society is also evidenced in the placement of several historical markers throughout the Village, noting the historical significance of these sites as well as helping to digitize the Historical Society’s postcard collection. Mary’s appreciation of local history, whether town-wide or right here in Lindenhurst make Mary the consummate choice for Tree-Lighter during the Lindenhurst Historical Society’s Diamond Jubilee Year! So, one and all, young and the young at heart, mark your calendars for Sunday, December 3rd. The day’s activities begin at 12 Noon at the Lindenhurst Village Square. The Lindenhurst Fire Department Christmas Parade kicks off from Firemen’s Park at dusk concluding at the Village Square. The Lindenhurst Historical Society Tree Lighting ceremony will follow immediately thereafter. See you then!
