Members of the North Lindenhurst and Lindenhurst fire departments visited students at the elementary schools throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District to discuss fire safety. Students attended a brief assembly, where they viewed a video on the importance

of smoke detectors and creating a family fire exit plan. Students then proceeded to the school parking lot, where a “smoke house” and large fire truck were waiting. The smoke house is a trailer designed to show students what to do in the event of a fire. Fake smoke, imitating a real fire,

appeared from the house. Students were shown how to make a safe escape by dropping to their knees, getting to the nearest door and exiting promptly. Following the smoke house tour, students explored the fire truck as the volunteers explained the purpose of each tool.

The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

The Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club recently held their Installation of Officers and Executive Board at the Long Island Yacht Club. Alice Cromarty along with Paula Vidal were installed as Co-President of the club. Mayor Michael

Lavorata said, “I was so happy to see Alice Cromarty become President of a club that her father, the late Supreme Court Judge Arthur Cromarty was such an active part of for many years.” The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst is

a community service organization where professionals, retires, students, and active volunteers all come together with one common goal: kindness, children, caring and community service.

In honor of Veterans Day, which recently passed, below is a heartfelt story of how Long Island Cares helped a female veteran. Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Ryan’s Story Presented Halligan, recounted to the sixth grade students of Lindenhurst, the story of his son’s life and the ridicule he endured. In separate sessions for students and parents, he discussed the devastating impact his son’s suicide has had on his family, and the power of forgiveness. “Ryan was so focused on the people who didn’t like him that he forgot all about those people in his life who loved him,” said Mr. Halligan. “I assure every one of you in this

room, you are loved beyond belief.” Mr. Halligan urged students to seek help from a trusted grown-up if they, or someone they know are having similar bad feelings and to speak up if they know someone who is bullying a classmate. “Bullies tend to pick on people for the audience reaction. If you don’t give them the attention, or let them know you don’t think it is cool, they won’t have the same desire to do it.”

The project activities that could affect the floodplain include removal of existing concrete and asphalt debris along the shoreline, construction of the high- and low-tide rock sills, the sitting wall, and new drainage outlets, and the potential removal of the asphalt road surface at the east end of the site. While some of the work will take place in the wetland area, the disturbance will be temporary, and the long-term effects will include returning the overall area to a more natural state. The Proposed Activity will mechanically remove existing invasive plants, Phragmites, and plant Spartina alterniflora in the intertidal marsh seaward of mean high water and plant Spartina patens in the high marsh environment landward of mean high water in accordance with a NYSDEC approved planting plan. This will improve the natural habitat within the floodplain and wetlands providing improved functionality of these valuable assets.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health careacquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go

a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -- keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap

in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread of infection in a health care setting. Even if the caregiver says they washed their hands right before coming into the room, don’t feel embarrassed to ask them to do it again in front of you.
