Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Wreaths Across America Deadline Dec. 1 The Lindenhurst High School National Art Honor Society is raising funds for Wreaths Across America. The following ID numbers are required on each order so that the wreaths will be delivered to the

Long Island National Cemetery on Wellwood Avenue. The Location ID number is NYLINC and the Group ID number is NY008P. Orders will be taken until Dec. 1. On Dec. 19, National Wreaths Across America Day, the members of the class will place the sponsored wreaths on the graves of the fallen soldiers, as will numerous volunteers throughout the country.

This is the sixth year that Lindenhurst High School students have supported the cause. Last year, more than 200 wreaths were sponsored. This year, they are hoping to surpass that impressive number. All are encouraged to sponsor at least one wreath so as to demonstrate gratitude to the fallen heroes.

Veteran’s Day. The banner will cost $200, with a portion of the proceeds going to a veterans-related charitable organization. In addition to the banner that will hang outside, program participants will also receive a 4”x6” print of the banner, a digital version, and the chance to share your loved ones service story to an page on the Town of Babylon and Lindenhurst Kiwanis websites. “Here in the Town of Babylon, we always go the extra mile to honor our service men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “This is a unique way to honor our veterans and add an extra element to our downtowns. Thank

you to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis, our Beautification Program and all others involved for their hard work on this project,” he added. The project first took off in the town after the mothers of two active duty service members, Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther, came to Supervisor Rich Schaffer with the idea. From there, town’s Beautification Program, led by Director Viscel Moore, was contacted by Ralph Somma of the Lindenhurst Kiwanis, who agreed to carry the village’s program out across the town. HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROGRAM ANNOUNCED - Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman and Veteran Advisory Board Chairman DuWayne Gregory and the rest of the Town Board announced a partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst to hang banners across the town featuring the names and photos of service men and women from the Town of Babylon. The program, currently administered by the Lindenhurst Kiwanis in the Village of Lindenhurst, is an effort to honor veterans while beatifying downtown areas.

On Sunday November 8th, Frank Liquorie of Whitestone/Edgewater Park (the Bronx) received the WWII Victory Medal and a plaque for his service in the Navy during WWII. The ceremony was held at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in Throgs Neck in the Bronx. The ceremony also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Frank is the father of long time South Bay Neighbor News Account Executive Bob Liquorie as well as Geraldine Gress and Richard Liquorie. He is father-in-law to Barbara Liquorie, Georgette Liquorie and Ken Gress. Frank Liquorie was born in 1928 to first generation Italian American parents. He spent his childhood playing stickball, baseball and basketball

all in the confines of his South Bronx neighborhood. Frank attended St. Jerome’s School and onto Rice High School. Then came the war. Like most young men of his generation, Frank waited impatiently for his 17th birthday, when accompanied by his parents, he enlisted in the United States Navy. It was time for him to do his patriotic duty. The year was 1945. He was immediately sent to boot camp at Camp Perry, Virginia. From there onto Bayone, New Jersey on a special detail to prepare the dry docked United States ships for decommission. On to Norfork Virginia where he was assigned to the Destroyer Gyatt DD712 and shipped out to the Mediterranean where they swept for mines.

As the war was coming to an end, he went to Italy where the Italian Navy was being disbanded. His fleet inspected the Italian ships for sea worthiness and handed over many ships to the Russians. The 6th fleet then continued on to cruise the Mediterranean and stopped at many ports on the Good Neighbor Policy. These ports included but not limited to Gibraltar, Malta, Greece, Italy, and back to North Africa. The war was over. He returned to Boston and cruised onto the Caribbean and Central America continuing the Navy’s Good Neighbor Policy. Frank was discharged in 1949 and returned home to his wife Irene and large extended family. He was 21. Army Soldier Desperate For Help To Rescue Cat From The Middle East

Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death. Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her. Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers. “We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it. We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.” Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old. They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care. That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her. Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength. “We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together. I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.” Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Bringing pets back is not an easy task, and it’s one that is also costly. Not only will Rona have to go through a medical check, but the organization will need to work with other organizations in the Middle East to help make it happen, and it will need to pay for the travel expenses. The Ever Present Absence

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created as a way to showcase the nonprofit sector and all the good work that it does, as well as provide opportunities for deeper collaboration within the sector. The event acts as an opportunity to meet new people, discover new organizations doing business on Long Island, develop new relationships,\ and learn from the organizations that are being honored. The nonprofit sector continues to be challenged, with increased demand for services, reductions in government funding, increases in audits and regulations and an uptick in consolidation in the sector. Through

it all, the sector continues t o persevere, touching all of us and making a difference in each of our lives. It is the nonprofit s p i r i t that is applauded a n d reward edwith the Imagine Awards. Long Island based nonprofits will compete against each other in 5 categories, with the winner in each category winning a $5,000 grant! The Imagine Awards not only provides a $5,000 check to

the winner in each category, it provides a professionally developed video to each finalist, it also provides an avenue to collaborate and explore, exposure and recognition to the finalists and the sector, and a night where the light is shine in on the

sector to spotlight all the amazing things that are happening in the nonprofit community. Imagine Awards participants have developed new partnerships and collaborations, made corporate connectios, which has resulted

in new board members and contributions, hve gained strategic insight into what other organizations are doing, and have developed new friendships a n d relationships that have p r o v e n essential in the growth and development of their organizations.
