Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult. They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. Long Islanders Invited To Kick Off Of National Alzheimer’s Walk At Babylon Town Hall

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will launch its nationwide Alzheimer’s walk at Babylon Town Hall (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst) on Saturday, October 30, at 10:00 am. Long Islanders are invited to take park in the “Alzheimer’s Walk in The Park” and can register in advance by visiting www. afawalk.com. Proceeds raised at the family-friendly event, which will also include health and wellness activities and

refreshments, will help support families affected by Alzheimer’s disease through AFA’s programs, services, and research towards a cure. Community service opportunities are available for students. The Walk will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall, a firstin-the-nation park created specifically to give families a dementia-friendly place that is peaceful, scenic and provides educational information about dementia-related illnesses, caregiving, and support

Town And County Officials Celebrate Fireman Upon His Retirement From FDNY Town of Babylon Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney recently joined Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly to celebrate a life-long Town of Babylon resident who retired from the New York City Fire Department after two and a half decades of service. Pete Maslinski grew up in and still calls North Lindenhurst home. He joined the FDNY in October of 1994 and spent 26 years responding to fire and emergency calls

throughout Brooklyn and Queens as a member of Engine 221 & Ladder 104 and then Squad 270. Maslinski was one of the hundreds of first responders who assisted at Ground Zero in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. He retired from the FDNY in March of 2020, however due to the pandemic, was never able to celebrate his ‘last tour’ or have a retirement party. In addition to his time with the FDNY, he is also an active 37 year member and ex-chief of

the North Lindenhurst Fire Department. “Its men like Pete who make our communities proud, from his time as a fireman to his volunteer work after Superstorm Sandy, Pete is an outstanding community servant who represents the best of Babylon,” said Legislator Tom Donnelly. “I along with all of colleagues at the Town of Babylon thank you for your service and wish you a happy retirement,” added Councilman Terence McSweeney.

Lindenhurst High School students recently took part in a two-day mini-college fair. The high school hosted the event to assist students in their exploration of postsecondary educational

options. Representatives from approximately 85 colleges and universities were on hand to speak with students about their schools’ programs, the application process and acceptance criteria and

procedures. The staff and faculty of the high school also joined in the efforts by wearing the shirts of their alma maters to further encourage students to explore their options.

Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
