United Way of Long Island’s 2023 “Stuff-A-Bus” program provided over 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for kindergarten through 5th grade students across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Corporate partners and community members dropped off donated school supplies at United Way’s Entenmann’s Family Center for Hope in Deer Park, NY. Volunteers came together to pack the supplies and load school buses so that no child would start the school year without the basics. According to Neisah, a sixth grader who helped unpack much needed supplies at her school, “It feels amazing to help all these students. It feels great and our community, our school, is all about kindness.” Education is essential to unlocking a student’s potential and achieving financial success. Two brothers from Master Han’s Copiague Champions Taekwondo, Matthew Frejek and Anthony Frejek both went to the 2023 USAT National Championships in Jacksonville, Florida this year. Matthew Frejek placed 3rd (bronze medal) in Youth -30kg Fin Weight Black Belt Division Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 1st (gold medal) in -23kg Lightweight Division Intermediate Olympic Sparring. They also went to South Korea for the 2023 Korea Open International Taekwondo Championships. This is one of the biggest tournaments in the world. Matthew Frejek placed 3rd (bronze medal) in -27kg Fin Weight Black Belt Division Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 2nd (silver medal) in Color Belt Olympic Sparring -23kg Lightweight Division. Lastly, they attended one of the world’s major tournaments, the 2023 USAT Grand Prix Final Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Matthew Frejek placed 2nd (silver medal) in -30kg Fin Weight Division Black Belt Olympic Sparring. Anthony Frejek placed 1st (gold medal) in -23kg Lightweight Division Intermediate Olympic Sparring. Matthew will try out for the 2024 U.S. National Taekwondo Team Trials in January in Charlotte, North Carolina. He’s been training and working hard everyday for this trial. Patricia E. (Drury) Petrone, passed away at the age of 79 on Tuesday, October 10th in Sedona, Arizona with her daughter at her side. Patricia had several lovely weeks making memories in Arizona with her family before she passed after her long-awaited RV trip across the country. Patricia did her best to manage the physical pain of her medical conditions for many years and was ready to finally be pain free. She was in hospice for only one week. After she received her Last Rites from Fr Glen, John Vianney Catholic Church, she swiftly left. Patricia was a resident of South Abington Township, PA for over 30 years. Patricia was born in Yonkers, NY and was the daughter of the late Francis Drury and Rose Thompson. Patricia was a graduate of the New York Foundling Hospital and a dedicated nurse for over 30 years at both Winthrop and Mercy Hospital in New York. Her greatest joy was caring for the newborns in the NICU. Her swift emergency response during a fire at Winthrop hospital led to the safe evacuation of a full ward of infants. Her evacuation procedure was later added to the hospital’s emergency policy handbook as a guide. The hardships of Patricia’s youth generated a steadfast faith throughout her lifetime. She entered Queen of the Rosary in Amityville, NY, where she adopted her additional middle name Faith and began her journey to become a nun, a third order Dominican Tertiary. She answered God’s call to become a wife and mother before taking her final vows. After her marriage to her beloved, Anthony Petrone Jr, (also deceased in 2012) she served as a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Perpetual

Help in Lindenhurst, NY. After their relocation she served as a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of the Snows parish in Clarks Summit, PA. Patricia ended her nursing career focused on geriatrics. In retirement she founded a small business, Have-A-Need, with her husband. Together they served the community, primarily homebound elders, with basic needs, home maintenance and more. A loving, kind soul, devoted mother, grandmother, family member and friend, Patricia will be sadly missed for her gentle, compassionate and thoughtful ways. She had a tremendous love for our Lord and devotion to her Roman Catholic faith. She adored the blessed Mother, Our Lady of Fatima and prayed the rosary daily. She was known for praying the rosary for everyone and anyone that needed prayers. In turn her loved ones prayed the rosary for her as she made her transition in hospice. Patricia loved bowling, dancing, playing music (violin/piano/clarinet) and had a love for libraries. She helped reorganize and revive her parish library in

NY and in PA she created a library with a card catalog at Our Lady of Snows church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and Hallmark movies. She made countless prayer shawls and hats for those in need and beanies for babies. Patricia is survived by her son, Anthony Petrone III; daughters, Cara Marie and Jennie Petrone; granddaughter, Cheyanne Matisko; grandson, Angelo Matisko; brothers, Richard, Michael, Martin, James and Christopher Drury, and has numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. For those that wish to pay their respects a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 4th at 10:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst, NY. Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Hosting Training To Help Improve Services For Veterans Living With Cognitive Conditions To help enhance services for veterans, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is hosting a free educational workshop for those who serve and care for veterans, especially those living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and dementia. The workshop, “An Exploration of Brain Health and Trauma,” which includes training from AFA and the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services, will take place on Thursday, November 2, from 8:30

am to 12:00 pm, at The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights (21 Clark Street, Brooklyn). Individuals can register through AFA’s website. TBIs, which can be sustained in both combat and non-combat military service, PTSD, or being a prisoner of war can all increase a veteran’s chances of developing dementia, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans living with dementia can experience a re-emergence of traumatic memories as the brain

deteriorates, along with their coping skills and the ability to suppress traumatic memories. According to the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services, there are more than 150,000 veterans living in NYC. “Every veteran makes sacrifices and puts themselves in harm’s way in service to our country. During the course of their service, veterans may experience chronic stress, TBIs, or PTSD, especially if they served in combat. All of that impacts their mental health and increases

their risk of developing dementia,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Understanding the impact of chronic stress and trauma on brain health, especially for veterans with dementia, and knowing how to help veterans when traumatic memories cause them distress is essential for those who serve veterans, so that they can provide the level of support our veterans need and very much deserve.” The training workshop will detail the impact of

chronic stress, TBIs, and PTSD on brain health, the relationship between these factors and dementia, and vital information on resources, services and non-pharmacological approaches available to help. Speakers will include Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, SIFI, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services, and Lauren D’Mello, Ed.D., MHC, Executive Director of the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services’ Mental Health and Care Coordination
